Mangalore University to change plans for the ASRC in Belapu district; center to be used to conduct PG Courses

Mangalore University is changing plans for a much-vaunted advanced science research centre (ASRC) project at Belapu in the district. 

Following the steps of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, the Mangalore University is reconsidering to use the infrastructure set up there to begin a PG centre for the district. 

Mangalore University has decided to commence five PG courses at this proposed PG centre from the academic year 2020-21.

The newly set up PG centre will also suggest that the varsity now has a PG centre in each of the three revenue districts under its jurisdiction, including Udupi, Kodagu, and Dakshina Kannada. 

Additionally, the main PG campus is situated at Mangalagangothri near Mangaluru, the PG courses at Belapu will address the lacunae for Udupi district. Further, the PG campus for Kodagu has been established at Chikka Aluvara in Somwarpet taluk.

P S Yadapadithaya vice-chancellor, while confirming the university's plans informed that the university would need a minimum of INR 100 crore funds for this project, which is unlikely in the ongoing scenario. 

He further stated, “The centre, the brainchild of my predecessor K Byrappa was modelled on lines of IISER. In the changed scenario, we will use the infrastructure already being set up to start a PG campus for Udupi.”

Meanwhile, the new PG centre will offer courses in the fields of commerce and management, chemistry, physics, economics, that are high in demand and job-oriented, he added. 

Yadapadithaya informed that these PG courses would also require setting up of laboratories that can be upgraded to fulfil the requirements of ASRC as and when the financial situation is better, and investments are there either from the state government or other higher education funding authorities.

Apart from this, the varsity is also working to set up V S Acharya Centre for Study of Coastal Development after late Dr V S Acharya, a political leader from Udupi. “We will approach the government for budgetary support for this centre, and it should pass muster given his affability across political lines,” he revealed. 

Besides, Mangalore University is most likely to establish Centres for Kundapur Kannada, a local dialect in the district and poet Muddanna, belongs to Udupi.
