Kerala CM has introduced new four-year undergraduate programs (FYUP) in the state. Students are given three options: a three-year UG degree, a four-year UG honors degree, and a four-year UG honors with a research degree.

Kerala Introduces Four-Year Undergraduate Programs

New Delhi: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched new four-year undergraduate programs (FYUP) in all the universities in the state.

According to him, the new programs are aligned with global education trends. The main objective behind such initiatives is knowledge transfer and skills development, including vocational training. The new programs aim to help students develop their mental and social skills. This approach will also help increase research and employability.

Basis of this Initiative

The introduction of the FYUP is part of the state's higher education reforms, which are designed to address the outflow of students from Kerala to other states and abroad for further studies. During the inauguration event in Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayan said, "This new curriculum will adopt high-quality learning approaches.”

Students will be at liberty to choose their minor and major subjects without restrictions. For instance, science students can take courses in humanities or arts. The new program was launched at a ceremony held at the Government College for Women.

Implementation and Degree Options

Kerala's Higher Education Minister R. Bindu announced in May that from July 1, 2024, all state universities will offer these four-year programs. Students can receive a degree after three years or an honours degree after four years. They can also transfer between universities without changing courses and complete their degree in two-and-a-half years if they meet the credit requirements.

Kerala CM said in his statement that “Current programmes and courses are being revised based on a two-pronged approach that emphasises both knowledge generation and skill training. Curriculum in the field of technology has been revised with a view to provide full industrial experience to the students during the final year by assimilating the new changes.”

Course Choices and Credits

The FYUP offers three options: a three-year UG degree, a four-year UG honours degree, and a four-year UG honours with a research degree. Students who exit after three years will receive a UG degree in their major discipline after completing 133 credits. A four-year UG honours degree requires 177 credits, and those pursuing research can opt for an 'honours with research' course in the fourth year.
