IIT Madras Partners with SRIHER To Launch Joint MD-PhD Dual Degree Program

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) to introduce a pioneering MD-PhD dual degree program. 

As a part of this collaboration, the postgraduate medical degree will be awarded by SRIHER and a PhD degree by the Department of Medical Science and Technology of IIT Madras. The program will focus on fundamental clinical, interdisciplinary, and translational research. 

The MD-PhD dual degree program aims to cultivate professional research scientists poised to empower India’s journey towards self-reliance in medicine and healthcare. This program is set to commence in the upcoming academic year of 2024.

IIT Madras SRIHER MD-PhD Dual Degree Program 2024

Postgraduate students admitted to SRIHER through NEET and interested in pursuing a PhD will submit their applications for the PhD program to the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Madras after their second year. 

The Department of Medical Sciences and Technology will adhere to established procedures to choose candidates for enrollment in the PhD program.

According to the official statement, “The MD-PhD graduates, who are known as ‘Physician-Scientists’ are very few. However, a remarkable 37 percent of the Nobel Prizes in Physiology have been awarded to them. Physician-Scientists establish cause-and-effect relationships such as smoking and cancer and sugar and diabetes”.
