IIT Madras Launches School of Sustainability to Address Global Challenges; Check Details Here

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has inaugurated its newly established School of Sustainability. This school aims to offer innovative interdisciplinary courses related to sustainability, promote collaborative research to address significant global challenges and serve as a platform for hosting events and showcasing technologies that can influence practical applications and policy development.

The School of Sustainability, IIT Madras, has been envisioned as a Center of Excellence, fostering collaboration among faculty members from various departments and research centers.

Apart from introducing a minor course in sustainability and an interdisciplinary master's program in the field, the newly established school also intends to offer a range of capacity-building programs in sustainability for working professionals, available both online and in person.

According to a statement from IIT Madras, the school's initiatives will be centered around fundamental scientific research, technology development and transfer, practical project execution, and policy advisory services.

Highlighting its commitment to teaching and research, the IIT Madras School of Sustainability has revealed its plans. In addition to the upcoming minor course in sustainability slated for a 2024 launch, the school intends to introduce an Integrated Dual Degree Program (IDDD) focusing on Sustainability within the next three to five years.

Furthermore, the school has identified four primary research and development domains: decarbonization, human settlements, modeling and scenario development, and behavioral and industrial change. In these areas, the school will engage in fundamental scientific research, translational product development, pilot implementations, and policy advisory services

In the long term, the School of Sustainability at IIT Madras aims to make significant contributions. It aspires to nurture versatile experts who will lead in constructing robust and sustainable infrastructure for industries and communities worldwide.

In addition, the school will serve as a catalyst for the transition to a low-carbon world by facilitating the conversion of research and knowledge into practical products and services.
