IIT Kharagpur Director, V K Tewari, has highlighted the institution's goal of achieving a top 10 global ranking by 2030.
New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kharagpur Director, V K Tewari, has highlighted the importance of branding for the premier tech institution, expressing confidence that it will secure a spot among the world's top 10 higher educational institutions by 2030.
During a virtual alumni meet, the IIT Kharagpur Director Tewari highlighted the need to involve students more cohesively and acknowledged the imperative to address limitations and focus on specific areas. He also pointed out that IIT Kharagpur holds the distinction of being the first IIT in the country.
He emphasized the necessity of thinking on an ambitious scale, taking decisive actions, and following PM Modi’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Expressing the goal to be among the top 10 globally, he referred to President Droupadi Murmu's call during the December 2023 Convocation to position the IIT Kharagpur Ranking within the top 50.

Further, Tewari also disclosed that while an official aimed for the top 25, he also has set the target for IIT Kharagpur to be within the elite top 10 higher educational institutions worldwide.
In the 2024 QS Asia World University Ranking, IIT Kharagpur secured the fifth position in India and the 59th spot in Asia. As the largest and pioneering IIT in the nation, it entered the top ranks of the QS Asia University list with an overall score of 54.5, as announced in a statement on November 11.
IIT Kharagpur Faculty Director also discussed the institute’s trajectory towards becoming one of the top 10 global higher educational institutions by 2030. Highlighting the importance of academia-industry collaborations, he urged the institute to engage with faculties and alumni, advocating increased partnerships with leading international universities to foster openness and growth.
The DRDO established a Center of Excellence (DIA-CoE) dedicated to futuristic studies in advanced technology domains such as AI, safety analytics, computational and data sciences, and more.
Moreover, the director Tewari highlighted that IIT Kharagpur has received official recognition as a Center of Excellence (CoE) in urban planning and design, attributed to the ongoing commendable efforts of the faculty and students.
As part of this acknowledgment, the Centre will allocate a grant of INR 250 crore to support the organization's development and training initiatives focused on India-specific urban planning and design knowledge over the coming years.
