New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has established a notable standard in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) initiatives with an impressive technology translation rate of 13.76%. The institution has surpassed 1,000 filings and over 400 granted IPRs to date. 

Prof. S. Ganesh, acting director of IIT Kanpur, commented that the noteworthy accomplishment of IIT Kanpur in surpassing 1,000+ filings and obtaining 400+ patents stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of the exceptional IIT Kanpur faculty, researchers, and innovators. 

This remarkable milestone highlights the institution's commitment to advancing knowledge and expanding the horizons of innovation, he added. 

This accomplishment owes much to the substantial contributions of both the faculty and students. Professor Tarun Gupta, the Dean of Research and Development, highlighted the pivotal role of the IPR cell at IIT, established in 2000.

The primary aim of this cell was to streamline patent filings and ensure the preservation of the institution's research and development endeavors, leading to this commendable achievement, Prof Gupta said. 

IIT Kanpur has licensed several impactful technologies that have significantly affected society. Noteworthy examples include 'Bhu Parikshak', a portable soil testing device, licensed to Agronxt Services Private Limited, capable of analyzing up to 100,000 soil test samples. In its inaugural year post-launch, this device assisted over 1 million farmers.

Among other remarkable products, there is Checko, an anti-counterfeiting solution licensed to Transpack Technologies. This solution aids in detecting counterfeit products. 

Further, a patented design for a convertible school bag was licensed to PROSOC Innovators Pvt. Ltd. This innovative school bag has garnered contentment from over 550,000 students across 20 states in India.

Driving Sustainability: Technological Breakthroughs in Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling

The escalating demand for lithium-ion batteries, driven by the surge in electric vehicle and portable electronic device usage, has raised concerns about electronic waste disposal. However, technological strides in battery recycling are emerging as a viable solution to tackle this issue. 

These advancements include several key areas: designing batteries with recyclability as a priority, integrating artificial intelligence and robotics for efficient sorting and segregation, employing hydrometallurgical processes for eco-friendly extraction of valuable materials, investigating bioremediation as a sustainable resource recovery method, and creating solid-state lithium-ion batteries for simplified recycling. 

The primary aim of these innovations is to establish a more circular and sustainable battery ecosystem.
