IIMs are starting on a novel educational journey by integrating ancient Indian wisdom into their management courses. These elective programs, inspired by Indian philosophy, align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

IIMs to Explore Teaching Management Skills from Indian Scriptures

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is drawing inspiration from ancient Indian wisdom as it prepares to launch courses that curate management principles from ancient Indian philosophy and ethos.

According to the latest reports, these elective courses carry academic credits. This initiative of IIMs aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. 

Bharat Bhaskar, the director of IIM-Ahmedabad, commented stating that to incorporate new courses that resonate with Indian business philosophy, the program review committee is currently exploring ways to align the program curriculum with the principles outlined in NEP 2020.

IIM-Ahmedabad has initiated a new program that extends online learning opportunities to all students, including those not enrolled at the university. This program introduces fresh courses including Indian philosophy, ancient Indian economy, and management.

According to Debashis Chatterjee, director of IIM-Kozhikode, the curriculum incorporates content on Indian Thought in Management and Gandhian leadership through courses, seminars, and symposiums in the upcoming year. In addition, a new course titled "Workplace Wellbeing through Karma Yoga" has been introduced this year.

Highlighting the mounting challenge of workplace wellbeing confronting organizations worldwide, Chatterjee further explained that this course imparts fundamental principles from Indian wisdom to clarify the reasons and methods for practicing karma yoga, aiming to enhance both personal and organizational productivity.

IIM-Indore has designed a unique course titled 'Extreme Outdoor,' a 4-credit program that includes trekking as an integral component. During these treks, students will be encouraged to engage in discussions.

Providing insights into the purpose of this course, Himanshu Rai, the IIM Indore director, said that the course is designed to delve into decision-making processes and interpersonal dynamics within challenging scenarios. Rai, who also teaches a negotiation course that draws inspiration from excerpts found in the Mahabharata.

IIM-Indore has introduced innovative courses such as 'Mithila Art for Managers' and 'Art and Science of Yoga' with the aim of helping students manage stress and enhance their overall wellbeing.

Furthermore, the institute has expanded the credits allocated to their rural engagement program for the current academic session. This expansion is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of rural economies and village life.

Meanwhile, IIM-Raipur is in the process of developing a course titled 'Indian Philosophy,' which is likely to be introduced in the upcoming academic year. Currently, Indian Philosophy is being taught in the form of an 8-9 hour workshop. 

According to the director, Ram Kumar Kakani, this course will evolve into a half-credit course in the following year and will consist of 15 hours of classroom instruction and approximately 50 hours of additional student work outside the classroom.

Moreover, Bhimaraya Metri, the director of IIM-Nagpur, has disclosed plans to introduce three unconventional courses at their institute. These courses include 'Life Management,' 'Science of Happiness,' and management lessons inspired by eminent personalities such as Vikram Sarabhai.

Taking inspiration from Kautiliya's Arthashastra, IIM-Sirmaur is set to launch a program that delves into the wisdom derived from Indian heritage, mythology, and philosophy.

The ultimate goal for graduates of these IIM institutions is to possess management expertise deeply rooted in ancient Indian scriptures and wisdom.
