IIM Rohtak Ranks Among Top 2% Business Schools Globally, Says Director Prof Dheeraj

New Delhi: IIM Rohtak Director, Prof Dheeraj Sharma, has revealed in an interview that the management institute has attained a position among the top 2% of business schools worldwide after obtaining accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

Further in the interview, IIM Rohtak Director stated that the next objective for IIM Rohtak is to achieve a favourable ranking in the QS Global MBA Rankings. Inquiring about the areas where IIM Rohtak excels despite being a relatively younger IIM, Prof Sharma disclosed that the institute has made notable strides. 

Being in its 14th year, IIM Rohtak stands as the largest IIM in terms of student enrollment. With over 1,600 students enrolled in various long-duration programs, the institute offers seven such programs. 

Among these IIM Rohtak programs are four full-time offerings, namely a Master in Business Administration, Integrated Programme in Management (BBA+MBA), Integrated Programme in Law (BBA+LLB), and Doctoral Programme in Management. 

In addition, there are three blended learning programs available at IIM Rohtak, such as Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management and PG Diploma in Management for Executives.

IIM Rohtak's Unparalleled Gender Diversity and Research Excellence

IIM Rohtak has attained a remarkable milestone in global gender diversity, with its flagship MBA program boasting over 70% female students. This ratio stands as the highest in the history of any co-educational institution in the country, solidifying IIM Rohtak's position as a leader in promoting gender equality.

Speaking about the faculty members at IIM Rohtak, the director said that the faculties have consistently contributed to the field of research. In the academic year 2022-23, they published and accepted over 67 research papers in prestigious journals and reputable outlets.

Impressively, 36 of these papers were published in A*/A-category journals. This outstanding research output establishes the faculty at IIM Rohtak as one of the finest in the world. 

IIM Rohtak's Unique Courses 

Commenting on the presence of unique courses at IIM Rohtak, Prof said that the institute has indeed introduced distinctive programs. In 2018, it introduced the BBA+MBA program, providing an exit option after BBA. 

The same year, the institute launched the PG Diploma in Sports Management, known for its excellent curriculum and global faculty. In 2021, IIM Rohtak expanded into legal education with the exclusive five-year BBA+LLB program. These programs are exclusively available at IIM Rohtak and benefit from the expertise of faculty from over 50 foreign institutions.

Duration of Government Support for New-age IIMs

When asked about the years it will take for the new-age IIMs to require government support, the director stated that the IIM Act is aimed to grant autonomy to IIMs, and achieving self-funding is crucial. 

Initially, new-age IIMs may require government support. However, the objective should be to establish them as self-sufficient institutes managing their financial needs through various revenue sources like tuition fees, consulting, and executive education. The goal is to gradually reduce dependence on government support and ensure long-term sustainability.

Advantage of IIM Rohtak in Delhi NCR

Talking about the advantage of IIM Rohtak being situated in Delhi NCR, it was acknowledged that IIM Rohtak holds a unique advantage as the only IIM in Delhi NCR. 

He said that the NCR region offers a favourable environment for growth, with factors such as effective policymaking, excellent infrastructure, and esteemed educational institutions. 

The presence of numerous SMEs employing millions of people and several large enterprises contributes to the region's economic strength. The NCR has a GDP of $370 billion (PPP) and is predicted to rise to the 11th rank globally by 2030 (Oxford Economics' estimate).

It was mentioned that IIM Rohtak has effectively utilised its strategic position within the NCR, along with its modern facilities situated on a sprawling 200-acre campus, to establish close collaborations with industry. 

The institute is dedicated to public policy work and has successfully undertaken consultancy projects in partnership with various government entities. These include the ministries of home affairs, agriculture, consumer affairs, and tourism, as well as the National Disaster Response Force and Prasad Bharti.

When inquired about the proximity of the new campus to Delhi, it was confirmed that a new campus is indeed being constructed in the heart of Gurugram (Gurgaon). The Director expressed the belief that this development will bring about a significant transformation in management education within the NCR.

Contributions to Rohtak's Development

IIM Rohtak is dedicated to serving the people of Haryana. Notably, it organised the G20 summit in 2023, showcasing its commitment to economic cooperation. The institute is currently involved in a project commissioned by the Haryana government to develop rural consumer and MSME confidence indices. 

Further, IIM Rohtak initiated a rural immersion course where MBA students gained insights into the rural ecosystem and institutions like panchayats and rural businesses. 

It was mentioned that IIM Rohtak has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Haryana Police, establishing an institutional mechanism for knowledge sharing and capacity building for their officers. 

Apart from assisting the state in areas such as e-governance, digitization, grievance redressal, and employment generation, the institute has also provided advice to Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation and conducted an oxygen audit during the second wave of Covid-19. 

IIM Rohtak Rankings 2023 

Concluding the interview by speaking about the rankings, he said that IIM Rohtak has achieved the 16th rank in NIRF 2022. With the recent accreditation by AMBA, the institute now stands among the top 2% of business schools globally. 

Furthermore, there is a conscious effort to excel in the QS Global MBA Rankings. The aim is to enhance the IIM Rohtak brand by benchmarking against relevant international standards and competing with renowned global management institutions, Prof Sharma added.
