IIM Indore on Tuesday launched its highly anticipated Centre of Excellence for Waste Management and WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) - ANVESHAN, aiming towards a clean and green future.

New Delhi:  IIM Indore took a significant step towards a sustainable future with the inauguration of ANVESHAN, an initiative aimed at creating a cleaner and greener environment. 

This new program was inaugurated by the IIM Indore director Professor Himanshu Rai, ANVESHAN marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of tackling pressing environmental and cleanliness challenges.

ANVESHAN by IIM Indore will focus on training capacity building by training mayors, counsellors, and policymakers in waste management and WASH. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has granted INR 19.95 crore for this project. 

ANVESHAN Inaugural Batch Details

The inaugural batch of ANVESHAN, commencing on July 31, consists of municipal commissioners nominated and selected from various regions across the nation, demonstrating their commitment to cleanliness and waste management.

The four-day program will offer several insights such as interacting with the IIM Indore Faculty Members and Indore Municipal Corporation officials. Candidates will also be able to visit the waste management plants.

ANVESHAN's collaboration has been extended globally partnering with renowned institutions such as the University of Denver, Rutgers University, University of Glasgow, the University of Liverpool, and Bocconi University. The international expertise will help enhance the Indore Swachhata Model and optimize wet and dry waste management, transforming waste into wealth.

According to Professor Rai about ANVESHAN, "We aim to train and empower mayors, councilors, and policy-makers in the critical fields of waste management and WASH. By offering comprehensive training programs, we intend to enhance their capabilities and equip them with the necessary skills to drive positive change in their communities." 

Professor Rai also added that the way Indore has achieved the Cleanest City of the Nation Award for six consecutive years, it is evident that behavioral training plays a pivotal role in ensuring cleanliness and promoting a healthy environment in our city, state, and nation. In line with this, ANVESHAN will also conduct training programs for welfare associations, hotels, and hospitals, enabling them to enhance their cleanliness and hygiene standards.

He also includes “As part of its vision, ANVESHAN plans to introduce mandatory asynchronous certificate programs and establish the prestigious "IIM Indore Rating for Cleanliness" for hotels and hospitals, championing the highest cleanliness and hygiene standards”

The core team members of ANVESHAN include Professor Himanshu Rai and other faculty members, “ Professor Shruti Tewari and Professor Vaijayanthee Iyer, who will oversee behavioral training initiatives whereas Professor Amit Vatsa will spearhead coordination efforts with the Indore Municipal Corporation to explore innovative ways to convert waste into wealth. 

The team also includes Professor D.L. Sunder and Professor Nishit Sinha will provide mentorship and guidance to startups focusing on waste management. Professor Ganesh N and Professor Subin Sudhir have been assigned for creating the contextually relevant courses for ANVESHAN.

ANVESHAN's adopts various different approaches which encompass various aspects of waste management and WASH, including wet and dry waste handling, behavioral training, and research. The institute aims to boost the implementation of the Indore Swachhata Model and also will help to drive the development of sustainable solutions which will be beneficial for a cleaner and healthier India.

ANVESHAN at IIM Indore will serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, idea exchange, and building a network of like-minded individuals committed to creating a cleaner, greener future. The advanced studios are equipped with synchronous and asynchronous technologies enabling the production of high-quality educational programs, live recordings, and seamless online classes.
