New Delhi: A petition has been submitted in the Kerala High Court to change the name of Kerala University's youth festival, 'Intifada'. The petitioner is a first-year student at a Kerala University college and claims that the term 'Intifada' is associated with the Israel-Palestine War

The student is seeking a court order to remove the festival's logo. The event is scheduled from March 7 to 11, 2024. Expressing concern, the petitioner argues that naming this year's youth festival 'Intifada' is confusing and highly disturbing.

Explaining further, the student highlights that 'Intifada' is an Arabic word meaning 'shake-off', historically associated with civil uprisings in Palestine, mainly linked to militant/terror groups like Hamas. The festival's logo, according to the petitioner, features the Palestinian scarf on the map of Israel.

"The map of Israel is superimposed on the logo of the festival. The caption reads 'the protest of the arts against the invasion.' The logo or emblem with the caption does not suit the taste or flavour of a purely art and cultural festival. Instead, it would result in the creation of division in the student fraternity," the petitioner argued.

Additionally, the petitioner claims to have written letters to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan (also the Chancellor) and the Vice-Chancellor, but as of now, action still needs to be taken.
