Delhi University LLB final year students have sought an appeal to the Bar Council of India (BCI) opposing the request made by law students to cancel DU OBE 2021 due to the pandemic.
Students and Faculty of Law, Delhi University have requested BCI to continue with the DU OBE 2021 based evaluation for the pending intermediate examination only. Earlier, concerned with the surge of coronavirus in the country, over 300 DU LLB students requested the Bar Council of India to cancel the examination to ensure the safety of students.
In wake of the current COVID-19 surge in the country, Delhi University is now conducting an open book examination for LLB students. The exams are being held for all intermediate, backlogs, and improvement students from June 14, 2021.
Students further requested the Council to adopt the assignment-based result evaluation criteria for this year. In addition to this, 273 students of LLB across the country also came forward and requested the BCI to release alternative result evaluation guidelines.
As a result, on June 2nd, the Bar Council of India appointed a 12-member committee to take measures and necessary steps regarding the evaluation process for LLB students. Referring to the request for exam cancellation, the students' collective of the Faculty of Law, DU has requested the Council to continue with the examination since the request has no "genuine" reasons.
In the letter, the students further added that conducting the examination in COVID-19 times will also help students in diverting their attention from the negative impact of a pandemic.
“Students' mental health is affected when they may have to study and appear for the exams. However, very few of them are those whose concerns are genuine, most of the students are those who are always looking for a way to somehow circumvent the exams and get a degree in hand. They are here not to study the law but to get the degree only,” the letter further reads.
Arguing over DU OBE 2021 for LLB, a student wrote: “We find respite in diverting our attention from the loss of our loved ones to get on with our studies and do well here so as to at least secure a good future career-wise".
