Cotton University Begins PhD Admission 2026; Entrance Test on March 22

Cotton University, Guwahati has started the Ph.D Admission 2026 process for multiple departments across science, arts and language streams. The official notification was issued on February 19, 2026, and eligible candidates can apply online through the university admission portal.

The entrance test is scheduled for March 22, 2026 (tentative). The admission process will follow UGC Ph.D Regulations 2022 along with the latest NET-related public notice.

The application fee for Cotton University Ph.D Admission 2026 is INR 1,200 for all categories, and candidates must pay the amount online through Debit Card, Credit Card, or Net Banking while submitting the application form.

Ph.D seats are available in multiple departments including Anthropology, Arabic, Persian, Assamese, Botany, Chemistry, CSIT, Economics, English, Geography, Geology, Hindi, History, Mathematics, Political Science, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, and Mass Communication and Media Studies.

As per the notification, Arabic has 4 seats, Persian has 3 seats, and Zoology has 12 seats, while seat numbers for other departments are available in the official notice. The university may increase or keep seats vacant depending on suitability of candidates.

To be eligible, applicants must have a Master’s degree with at least 55% marks in a relevant subject. A 5% relaxation is available for SC/ST/OBC/PwD (above 40% disability)/EWS candidates. Final semester PG students can also apply, but they must meet the eligibility criteria at the time of admission.

Grace marks obtained in qualifying examinations will not be counted. Admissions will be conducted according to the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.

The selection process includes an Entrance Test of 70 marks and a Personal Interview/Viva Voce of 30 marks. The entrance test will consist of 50% Research Methodology and 50% subject-specific questions, and candidates must secure at least 50% marks to qualify for the interview round. However, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/ICMR/DBT or similar national-level examinations may directly appear for the interview as per Cotton University rules. NET-qualified candidates under Category 2 and Category 3 (from June 2024 onwards) are exempted from the entrance test. Final selection will be based on 70:30 weightage (Entrance + Interview), research interest, and availability of seats.

Selected scholars must attend Ph.D coursework classes with a minimum 75% attendance, follow university and UGC regulations, and complete all admission formalities within the prescribed timeline. Failure to meet these conditions may lead to cancellation of admission. After the March 22, 2026 entrance test, shortlisted candidates will be invited for department-wise interviews, and final merit lists will be prepared based on performance and declared vacancies.

Candidates are advised to keep all required documents, including academic certificates, NET certificates (if applicable), and category certificates ready for verification and regularly check the university website for updates.
