CBSE Plans to Conduct Open-Book Examinations for Students of Classes 9 to 12

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has planned to modernize the methodologies in the Indian education system by conducting Open Book Examination for students of classes 9 to 12. The motive behind this major step is to shift the focus from memorization to increasing critical thinking skills among students.

The Open-Book Examinations by CBSE will offer students the opportunity to access their books during the assessment period. This approach will show the importance of resourcefulness and critical thinking among the students. Traditionally, the examinations have been understood as a memorization process, where students cram the amount of information without understanding the concept. OBEs will mark a shift and will challenge the students to drive deep into subjects and apply their knowledge in real-life situations.

CBSE plans to conduct a pilot run in selected schools by targeting subjects like English, mathematics, and biology for classes 11 and 12, and science, mathematics, and science for classes 9 and 10

The process of preparing for OBEs will be different from CBEs; students need to understand the material thoroughly, organize their reference materials, and practice time management for better performance.

CBSE has decided to collaborate with Delhi University to gain feedback and insights. The aim behind the collaboration is to commit to fostering a progressive learning environment that will prepare students to deal with the challenges of the 21st century.
