Dr. Sathyajith S is an accomplished professional currently serving as the Head of Department (H.O.D) and Assistant Professor in the Post Graduate Department of Physics. Since joining the service on 1st June 2015 as an assistant Professor at DB College Thalayola Parambu, Dr. Sathyajith has demonstrated excellence in teaching, with 8 years of experience at both the PG and UG levels. His educational background showcases his dedication to academic pursuits, obtained MSc in Physics from Kerala University with First Class in 2008 having completed PhD in Physics from VIT University, Vellore in 2012. In addition, he worked as JRF in VIT -IGCAR(Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research ) project and research trainee at RRCAT Indore.

He is not only a committed educator but also actively contributes to the college community. During the academic year 2016-2017, he served as the Career and Guidance Cell Coordinator, PTA Secretary from 2017 -2019, IT and website coordinator from 2017-2020, elected council member (2019) and library committee convenor (2022 onwards).

Being the head of the physics Department, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

As the head of the department, my responsibilities encompass several key areas. UG and PG admission monitoring, department time table design monitoring purchase and service of lab equipment, ensure the timely completion of the syllabus in accordance with the university calendar. This involves coordinating with faculty members to ensure that all topics are covered within the designated time frame. Additionally, I oversee the verification and recording of internal marks and attendance of students in each semester. This involves closely monitoring the assessment process and collaborating with faculty to ensure accurate and fair evaluation. Furthermore, I provide supervision and guidance for student projects. This includes assigning appropriate project advisors, monitoring progress, and offering support and feedback to ensure successful completion. In my role, I am also responsible for organizing Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings. These gatherings provide a platform for constructive dialogue between parents, teachers, and administrators, fostering a collaborative environment that supports students’; academic and personal development. Lastly, I actively participate in various student events and address students on significant occasions. Whether it’s delivering motivating speeches, offering guidance or acknowledging their achievements, I strive to inspire and engage students, fostering a positive and enriching educational experience.


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?

We are actively involved in conducting and organizing add-on courses and training programs that bridge the gap between academic subjects and industry needs. These initiatives are designed to provide students with practical skills and knowledge that align with the demands of the job market. Our add-on courses are carefully crafted to complement the existing curriculum and offer specialized training in areas that are highly sought-after by industries. By identifying emerging trends and skill requirements, we ensure that our offerings are relevant and up-to-date. Additionally, we collaborate closely with industry experts and professionals to develop these courses. This collaboration helps us incorporate real-world insights and industry best practices into the curriculum, ensuring that students receive valuable and practical training. Our training programs are designed to provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to industry settings. We organize workshops, seminars, and internships that allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. These programs also provide opportunities for students to interact with industry professionals, fostering networking and mentorship relationships. By linking subjects with industry needs, we aim to enhance the employability of our students and equip them with the skills and knowledge required to excel in their chosen careers. What are the best practices offered by the department to the students which help them gain necessary skills?

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed our own Learning Management System (LMS) platform to provide students with an online mode of education. This platform offers a convenient and accessible way for students to continue their learning remotely. Our LMS platform can be accessed through the web address https://www.dbpc.in.net/moodle/. By utilizing this platform, students can access course materials, assignments, interactive quizzes, and other learning resources from the comfort of their homes or any location with internet connectivity. The LMS serves as a virtual classroom, enabling students to engage in online discussions, collaborate with peers, and communicate with instructors. It provides a structured environment for effective learning, allowing students to progress through the curriculum at their own pace while staying connected with their teachers and classmates. Additionally, the LMS platform offers features such as progress tracking, grade management, and announcement boards to keep students informed about important updates and deadlines. It also facilitates the submission of assignments and the provision of feedback, ensuring a seamless flow of communication between students and instructors. By leveraging our LMS platform, we aim to provide a comprehensive and flexible learning experience that empowers students to continue their education during challenging circumstances. What are your views upon the placements and higher education about the students from your department or How does your department prepare students for Higher education?

In recent years, we have witnessed a significant number of our Postgraduate (P.G) students establishing successful careers as researchers and scientific officials in various parts of the world.

This is a testament to the quality of education and mentorship we provide to our students. Our institution takes pride in nurturing the research and scientific abilities of our P.G students. How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

In order to provide our students a comprehensive understanding of the outside world and real- world experiences, we have implemented a program where students undergo training in top institutions across various parts of the state. This initiative aims to expose them to different environments and industries, broadening their perspectives and preparing them for the challenges

and opportunities they may encounter in their future careers. The training program extends for a duration of more than five days, allowing students ample time to immerse themselves in the institution they are visiting and gain valuable insights. During this period, students have the opportunity to interact with professionals, experts, and researchers who are at the forefront of their respective fields. Through seminars, workshops, and hands-on activities, students can acquire practical knowledge, learn new techniques, and understand the latest advancements in their areas of interest.

By participating in this program, students are exposed to diverse work cultures, networking opportunities, and collaborative environments. They witness firsthand the application of theoretical concepts learned in the classroom and gain a deeper understanding of how various industries operate. Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

At our college, we strongly believe in promoting and encouraging extracurricular activities alongside academics. We recognize the importance of holistic development and the role that extracurricular pursuits play in shaping well-rounded individuals. Our institution actively supports and provides opportunities for students to engage in a wide range of extracurricular activities. We take pride in celebrating the achievements of our students, both within and outside the academic realm. Last year, one of our students demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication in the sport of kabaddi and earned a well-deserved place in the kabaddi team. This accomplishment not only reflects the individual’s skills and abilities but also highlights the supportive environment and training provided by our college. We also offer mentorship and guidance to students who aspire to pursue extracurricular activities as a potential career path. We believe that extracurricular activities not only contribute to personal growth but also foster teamwork, leadership skills, discipline, and time management. When you came to this college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

When I assumed the role of H.O.D in 2023, one of my priorities was to align our training programs with industry standards and emphasize placement-oriented training. Recognizing the importance of preparing students for the competitive job market, we revamped our curriculum and training methodologies. Within the framework of the prescribed syllabus, we integrated industry-relevant topics, practical applications, and hands-on training. By incorporating current trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, we ensured that our students were equipped with the knowledge and skills sought after by employers. To bridge the gap between academia and industry, we established partnerships and collaborations with renowned companies and organizations. Through these alliances, we gained valuable insights into industry expectations, requirements, and skill sets in demand. We leveraged this knowledge to fine-tune our training programs accordingly, ensuring that students were well-prepared for the professional world. Moreover, we organized workshops, seminars, and guest lectures by industry professionals to expose students to real-world scenarios and foster industry-relevant thinking. This created a platform for students to interact with experts, gain practical insights, and build professional networks.

We also facilitated internships and industrial visits, giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-life settings and gain hands-on experience. This exposure helped students develop a deeper understanding of industry practices and reinforced the relevance of their classroom learning. By focusing on industry standards and placement-oriented training, we aimed to enhance the employability of our students and ensure their successful transition into the professional world. How does the curriculum of your department/college ensure the best practice of the industry?

In our curriculum, we place a strong emphasis on achieving predefined outcomes that are aligned with the design of the syllabus. We recognize the importance of clearly defining learning objectives and ensuring that students achieve them by the end of the course. To accomplish this, we follow a systematic approach that involves Designing Clear Learning Outcomes, Curriculum Mapping, Continuous Assessment, Formative Feedback and Support and Summer Evaluation. By implementing these strategies, we ensure that the design outcomes are achieved after the completion of the course. This approach promotes accountability, maintains the integrity of the curriculum, and ensures that students acquire the knowledge and skills intended by the syllabus.

Regular curriculum review and feedback from stakeholders, including faculty, industry experts, and students, help us refine and improve our curriculum design to meet the evolving needs of the industry and the expectations of the stakeholders. Overall, our commitment to achieving predefined outcomes ensures that our students receive a rigorous and meaningful educational experience, equipping them with the necessary skills and competencies to excel in their chosen fields.


How does the department/ college/University enhance the skills of the faculty and prepare them according to the industry standards?

At our institution, we place great importance on the continuous professional development of our faculty members. We have implemented a robust system to ensure that our faculty members stay updated with the latest advancements in their fields and engage in professional networking opportunities. To begin with, all our faculty members are required to complete an orientation program when they join our institution. This program familiarizes them with our teaching methodologies, policies, and the overall academic environment. It sets the foundation for their teaching journey at our institution.

Additionally, we have a system in place for faculty to attend refresher courses once every three years. These courses are designed to provide them with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, learn new teaching methodologies, and stay updated with the advancements in their respective fields.
