Dr. Deepti Chandra is presently working as Program Head PGDM Human Resource Management and Assistant Professor, HR & OB at the Institute of Public Enterprises, Hyderabad. Previous to this, she has worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Human Resource & Organization Behaviour, University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun, and as an Assistant Professor, of HR & OB at Army Institute of Management, Kolkata.
Her research interest motivated her to move across disciplines, studying various subjects in Commerce and Management. Dr. Deepti earned PhD in Human Resource and Industrial Relations from the Central University of Allahabad, a Masters’ in Human Resource Development, and a Masters’ in Commerce. She has also qualified for the UGC-JRF & NET for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and the National Eligibility Test (NET) for the Lectureship Examination.
You held key positions at various prestigious institutions throughout your career. What is that one thing that made you excited and walk with IPE in the journey?
IPE is a premier Institute, focusing on transforming students into leaders of tomorrow in organizations and society. It is an AICTE approved management Institute. It was established in the year 1964 as an autonomous non-profit society. IPE’s four key objectives include management education, research, consultancy, and training. The Institute launched its first two-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) program to provide skilled human resources to meet the requirements of the industry.
Keeping in view the market demand, the Institute also launched sector-specific post-graduate management programs in the areas of General Management, Marketing, Banking and Financial Services, International Business, and Human Resource Management. IPE’s engagement with long-term management education has received wide appreciation from the industry, government, and public as well as private sector enterprises. The Institute continuously endeavors to update its curriculum and teaching methodology of its courses based on feedback from the end-users, ensuring the quality, relevance, and utility of all its programs and courses.

Can you share your approach to teaching and mentoring students in the Human Resource Management program, especially in developing their interpersonal skills and industry knowledge?
I, as a faculty at IPE, strive to improve the student learning experience by using a variety of innovative teaching methodologies. I use a lot of case studies, group discussion exercises, role plays, practical project work, simulation games, computer-based exercises and review presentations, flip classroom method, videos, etc. to develop analytical, and decision-making skills of the students, keeping in view the industry requirements and employer expectations. A conscious attempt is made to evaluate students’ performance continuously through quizzes, group projects, assignments, short-term project work, and mid-term and end-term examinations to ensure effective learning of management concepts and tools.
The teaching and learning initiatives taken by me over a period of time have been Experiential Learning, Blended Learning, Mentoring, Individual and Group Assignments, Summer Internship Programme, Long-term Research Projects, Joint Publications with Students, Learning Management System -Moodle, Personality Development and Grooming and Promoting Inclusiveness in Society.
How do you plan to ensure that the curriculum of the IPE program reflects the latest global business trends, challenges, and opportunities?

How well is IPE focusing on maintaining industry relationships with companies to leverage them for live projects, training, and placements for the PGDM Human Resource Management?
Students of IPE are trained to work in every sector including manufacturing as well as services like the IT sector, retail marketing, etc. PGDM-HRM Program has a unique long-term project opportunity which majorly leads to obtaining pre-placement offers. The course has been designed practically to suit the requirements of HR professionals and includes specialized papers in HR. The scope of placements of the course lies from being an HR generalist to an HR specialist. How do you plan to encourage research and scholarly activities among faculty members and students in the PGDM Human Resource Management?
IPE was originally conceived as a research institution, devoted to the formulation, implementation, review, monitoring, and assessment of policies and programs concerning public enterprises. Subsequently, keeping in view the changing scenario, the focus is not only on public enterprises but on private entities as well. The Institute is partly funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, GoI. The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Ministry of Human Resources Development, GoI recognized the Institute as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Social Science research. The Institute has a record for delivering the inputs in time with application orientation.
The research studies of IPE have been extensively used by the Committee of Public Undertakings (CoPU), several ministries of the GoI, Planning Commission, SCOPE, Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) and pay revision committees. IPE publishes nine in-house journals including the ‘IPE journal’ which remains the only referred journal on public sector issues in India. IPE also has dedicated centers of research. Students are involved in several research studies that have been conducted and reports/publications have been brought out by these centers. These centers, apart from research, are involved in extending consultancy services and also conduct training programs for executives to enable them stay to abreast of the latest developments in policies and practices. Some of them are the Center for Corporate Governance, the Center for Governance and Public Policy, the Center for Corporate Social Responsibility, Databank on Central and State-Level Public Enterprises in India, the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD), and the Center for Energy Economics.
The Institute encourages students to author research publications along with faculty. They are encouraged to present publications at research conferences as well. They are also encouraged to associate with faculty in research projects.
What initiatives would you introduce to support networking and professional development opportunities for students in the program, such as international conferences or guest speaker events?
On completion of the first year, the students of PGDM HRM could undertake overseas/domestic study tours to international business establishments, arranged by the Institute. Although, the cost will have to be borne by the students who opt for it. The students have a choice to undertake either an International or domestic study tour. Students get the opportunity to attend and participate as paper presenters in national and global level conferences. They are encouraged to present publications at research conferences.
