What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I am most proud of successfully managing a team for 14 long years and the reason for this pride is none other than the dedicated efforts of every person who works tirelessly to make sure the department runs smoothly.
And due to the same reason, we have been recognised for our work input by the higher-ranking associates. And I consider supervising this amazing team as my greatest accomplishment because of the growth and work produced by them. Working with them also taught me how to be a better Department Head and employee in the same period.
Being the Department Head, what strategies have you employed for building an efficient work team?
I strongly believe that collaboration in the workplace and teamwork are vital for achieving common goals. Hence, I have ensured that in our department, everyone regularly communicates with each other to build mutual trust and strong professional relationships, so that flow of ideas and initiatives can happen smoothly and people can collaborate effectively. And then we have fostered the culture of diversity and inclusiveness so that more innovative solutions can be brought to the table.
But this doesn't mean that efficient teamwork is easy to accomplish, because faculty members now have to play multiple roles including teaching, research work, student mentoring, accreditation work, examination work and continuing learning. But with everyone's support and efforts, we are leading day by day.
What challenges do you usually face in day-to-day working and job responsibilities?
I believe that managing the academic affairs of a Department in itself is a very challenging task. Because we as an educator are engaged in designing and updating the curriculum, to ensure that courses are relevant and up-to-date and then we have to coordinate with faculty members on a regular basis to maintain high teaching standards.
Apart from this, handling faculties issues and students matters related to discipline and academic and non-academic grievances, is also very complex. Also, academic counseling can be emotionally draining and time-consuming sometimes. Last but not the least, managing the department's budget, allocating resources efficiently, finding funding for research and infrastructure upgrades, maintaining and improving the education quality of college to meet accreditation requirements and encouraging and supporting faculty and students in research and innovation activities, securing research funding, and ensuring that the department remains competitive in the academic world can be few of the most difficult task.
What do you find most difficult about being Head of Department and how can they be overcome in your opinion?
As we all know that in today's highly competitive environment, every organization normally expects its employees to perform their best and meet goals on time. And while it is common for employees to go through periods of time where they are less productive and motivated, there are always ways to help them feel motivated again. But if issues are left unattended, a decrease in productivity can affect the performance of other team members as well and delay the process of goal achievement.
Hence I would suggest to everyone to set clear work targets, implement work processes, assign specific tasks to each member of the department, and provide constructive feedback if they fall short of the expected performance. Because by addressing issues early on, it is possible to avoid more problems arising in a later stage.
Any insights which you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?
It's known to everyone that the world is constantly changing and learning does not stop even if someone finishes his/her formal education. Hence I would advise my dear students and youths of our society to embrace the concept of lifelong learning.
Also, learn new things and regularly improve your knowledge and skills, then be it through formal education, online courses, books or hands-on experiences. Define your short-term and long-term goals and having a clear direction can help you make informed decisions and stay motivated.
And if your goals are too big, break them down into smaller and manageable steps, build a strong professional network that can open up opportunities and provide necessary support when you need it. Attend events, conferences, and join clubs or organizations related to your interests. Consider volunteering or getting involved in community service, because giving back not only benefits others but also brings a sense of fulfillment and purpose to your life.
