Dr. N. Vinaya Kumari is working as a Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) at Malla Reddy Institute of Technology and Science, Hyderabad. She holds a B.Tech & M.Tech degree with a specialization in Computer Science & Engineering. She has received her Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in Computer Science and Engineering from SSSUTMS University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. She has 11+ years of experience in the field of teaching. She has published many papers in the SCI, SCOPUS, peer-refereed National and International journals, book chapters and conferences. Her research interests include Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and Data mining, She is also a Coordinator of the Indian Society for Technology Education (ISTE).

You have held key positions throughout your professional career, what are the special practices at the MRITS institution that you observed and you would like to highlight?

MRITS is an institution that cares about student's future and their overall development. My experience with this institution compared with other institutions is completely different. Here, I am always given an opportunity to train the students with new technologies and face new challenges that helped me in developing to get in touch with new technologies.

Technology is going through a lot of dynamic changes these days, what steps are you taking in order to be updated with the latest trends and incorporate them into the curriculum at MRITS?

“Balancing the curriculum based on the industry demands and students capability.” The study of curriculum and instruction has received a lot of attention. However, factors like developing technologies, industry needs and understanding level of students are also most important in curriculum design. We encourage students to complete internships with reputable software firms during their studies in order to close this gap between academia and industry.

What are the current biggest challenges in the field of Artificial Engineering and Machine Learning domain in general, and how do you plan to address them as a HOD?

Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science that focuses on creating software capable of mimicking behaviors and processes we would consider “intelligent” if exhibited by humans, including reasoning, learning, problem-solving, and exercising creativity. As it requires a lot of hard work to train students in creative learning and helping them in guiding in this domain is not very easy. We assist the faculty in training the students as per the developing technology and give them real-time projects to help them in developing their skill set.

How do you collaborate with industries and other academic institutions to provide practical exposure and internships for your students?

“Internships, projects and industrial visits for pupils maintain an industry connection.” The majority of the industries connected with engineering graduates from those universities lack the necessary abilities to get a job. They assert that the needs of the industry are not taken into account in engineering curricula. The industry must devote a significant amount of time and resources to providing training to newly hired engineers. We encourage students to complete internships with reputable software firms during their studies in order to close this gap between academia and industry. Can you explain us about the infrastructural facilities available with respect to CSE Department at MRITS?

The facilities we provide to the students of the CSE(AIML) Department include smart classes for a better understanding of the subject, well-equipped labs, trained faculty, activity rooms and seminar halls for group discussions and a research development center for a better future of the students.

How do you support and encourage the students at CSE department toward innovation?

We enhance the creativity of the students through designing skills. Our institute is conducting a value added course for students. The technical cultural fest is organized to develop team spirit and organization skills among the students. Knowledge sharing between students is fundamental for successful innovation. Guest lectures, Seminars, Workshops and training programs by Industry experts provide awareness to the students on the latest technologies adopted in the industries. Educating students in different fields is our primary goal. 

You are an individual who is actively involved in research and publications. How do you promote the culture of research activities among students?

Research and publications help students in many aspects like they will have a desire to face the challenge of solving unsolved problems, i.e., concern over practical problems initiates research. Desire to get the intellectual joy of doing some creative work. Desire to be of service to society. Desire to get respectability. We at MRITS offer credit courses in the curriculum as a free or technical elective for research to help the students participate in research. We encourage the students by giving undergraduate research scholarships and awards for innovative ideas.

What is your vision as a HOD of CSE (AIML) for the coming years at MRITS?

Constantly work on things that bring innovation, ideas, and solutions to the problem. The teaching fraternity should be following a student-centric teaching approach by using many strategies and tools, which consecutively results in Outcome-Based Education.
