New Delhi: The Odisha Government has collaborated with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to reduce the impact of landslides during storms. Under the collaboration, a user-friendly landslide Early Warning System (EWS) will be established in the Gajapati district to provide advanced information on landslides caused by disturbances in the stability of a slope. 

Additionally, to detect and warn of landslides, the university has successfully installed the first wireless sensor network system in history in Munnar, Kerala. Later, at the request of the Indian government, Amrita also installed a system of a similar nature in Sikkim, in the Northeast Himalayas.

This applied research, which has significant global value for all areas susceptible to landslides, was directly started by University Chancellor, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi to develop low-cost technologies for wide-area monitoring of landslides, to save lives.

Key Highlights of Odisha Government and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Collaboration

Earlier, the state Chief Administrative Secretary, Pradeep Kumar Jena, met with representatives of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. During the discussion, Dr. Sudesh K. Wadhawan highlighted the implementation of the Landslide Early Warning System and proactive measures for landslide risks.

Officers from the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) and other authorities participated in the discussion, which was centered on imparting the information and abilities needed for the system to be executed successfully. 

Dr. Maneesha V. Ramesh, Provost for Strategic Initiatives, Research, & Innovation and Director of the Amrita Centre for Wireless Networks and Applications, also took part in the discussions.
