13 New Medical Colleges in UP

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh is all set to witness a significant boost in medical education and healthcare infrastructure with the inauguration of 13 new medical colleges.

This is a very big initiative for the medical aspirants in UP. With an intake capacity of 1000 MBBS seats are set to begin their first academic year from 2023 onwards.

The principal secretary of the State Department of Medical Education has mentioned that the principals have already been appointed in these colleges.

He also mentioned that the construction is completed and the recruitment process has also been started. “ We have applied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for permission and NMC inspectors will come between June and July 2023 for assessment to provide permission to run the MBBS courses.”

He added “ We had 8,300 MBBS seats in 2022-23. We will have around 1,000 more with the 13 new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.” “MBBS seats will be added by private medical colleges as well. The exact number will be known once the NMC gives the requisite permissions and the seat matrix for admission counselling is ready. The number of seats may increase as a few private colleges may also start functioning from this year; existing colleges may expand.”

Uttar Pradesh has 75 districts, with 16 districts lacking a medical college, while the remaining 59 districts house 65 medical colleges (35 government and 30 private), including areas such as Lucknow with over six colleges.

He mentioned that there were 16 districts that don’t have a single medical college whereas districts like Lucknow have six medical colleges. Now the priority of the UP government is to set up one medical college in every district.

“We have a PPP policy for establishing medical colleges in under-served areas, with government subsidies to private sector operators. Four private entities are set to develop medical colleges, and six others are under the bidding process. For the remaining six districts, we are seeking GoI's in-principle approval, expected within six months. Our goal is to have at least one medical college in all districts of Uttar Pradesh by the end of 2027.”

Explaining these issues he added that people will get tertiary-level medical services in their own districts and people will not have to travel a long distance to get the medical facilities. People will also get to avail more affordable and quality healthcare.
