Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Reviews
3 Reviews Found
Likes
- Academics. The professors are very helpful
- Motivating environment where studying is made super fun.
- Research foundation. There are lots of opportunities for research.
Dislikes
- The fees could be a lesser but it is not a big disadvantage.
- Dutch language is required for some jobs so it would always be helpful to learn the language
- The weather can be challenging at times.
Campus Life
- The campus has 6-7 buildings that have a welcoming atmosphere. There are lots of self-study and silent/group study places, along with a 12-floor library.
- There is a sports centre near the campus with a gym, tennis, football and other sports. The university buildings have multiple ping pong tables and associations that host meetups, borrels and parties to promote networking.
- Campus name: Uilinstede. There is a STORM association for AI/CS people who keep holding parties and career events.

Likes
- Accepting of different people: they value equality and inclusion as priority
- Their focus on innovative research, encouraging student inputs, and helping us think critically.
- Their commitment to sustainability.
Dislikes
- There are a lot of places where Dutch fluency is required, even in settings where international students would also benefit (such as a career fair).
- There seems to be some preference for EU students over non-EU ones for jobs, internships, etc.
- The Dutch students and international students rarely mingle, and there are not many opportunities to do so either.
Campus Life
- VU is unconventional in the Netherlands because all the buildings are on the same campus (it is called a "campus university"). Except for the new SportsCentrum, which is in the residential campus about 10 minutes away, all the buildings are in the same campus.
- The medical centre is the nearby university medical hospital, though you have to be registered with a general practitioner there as per Dutch law. The library is HUGE, spanning 14 floors in the main building, with another one in the Medical Faculty Building.
- There are many campus events, such as the sustainability day, the Deja VU festival, and career day, and something or the other is always going on at the university. I am not too sure about extracurricular activities because I haven't taken part in any, but there are many opportunities for volunteering both within and outside your degree's faculty.
- I personally love the 3D room, which organises many activities such as board games, arts, and movie nights, allowing me to unwind and socialise. They were also kind enough to organise Diwali for the Indian community!

- I was interested to do a course in Netherland because my brother lives there and a course in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. This was the only course fulfilling my requirements.
- Vrije Universiteit English translation is free University. It was a free University in terms of discipline. We could drink or eat anything during classes. No compulsion on attendance. We can wear shorts. We can move in and move out anytime during class. The canteen had good food options as well.
Dislikes
- That it doesn't have a clinical master program in physiotherapy. Apart from that I liked everything about the university. Also expensive for international students but less expensive than UK and USA. Moreover, you will enjoy studying at the university.
Overview
Overall the experience in terms of life at University as a student was amazing. But getting a job during and after is an issue because of first, higher language requirements being in health care sector.
Campus Life
Campus Life is good. Sports is given a prime importance in Netherland in general. There is a supermarket and a restaurant on campus plus a canteen.
