Maastricht University (UM) admits students for two intakes per year. The September intake serves as the primary intake, and a limited number of programs are also available in the February intake. The university does not operate on a single annual intake model, and admission timelines vary by program. Applications are submitted through Studielink, followed by completion of requirements in Maastricht University’s MyApplication portal.

The deadlines for the upcoming September intake are:

  • UG admission deadlines: 1 April 2026
  • PG admission deadlines: 1 May 2026
  • Admission Application Submission via MyApplication Portal: 31 August 2026

Admission requirements at Maastricht University differ by program. Undergraduate applicants are expected to have completed Class 12 (CBSE or ISC) with the required grades in relevant subjects, while state board qualifications are assessed individually. Graduate applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance. English language proficiency requirements are program-specific, with accepted tests including IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge English.

Applicants are required to submit official academic transcripts, motivation letters or statements of purpose, CVs, proof of subject prerequisites (such as mathematics or statistics), and language test scores as part of the admission evaluation process.

Note: As of February 3, 2026, 1 EUR = INR 106.91 is used throughout the article for currency conversion.

Maastricht University Courses and Admission Requirements

Maastricht University has an official list of foreign secondary school (Class 12) diplomas that are considered equivalent to the Dutch pre-university (VWO) diploma. CBSE and ISC Class 12 certificates are accepted if the required grades are met. However, State Board Class 12 diplomas are not automatically recognised as equivalent to VWO. If a diploma is not listed, Maastricht University will review it individually during the application process.

Maastricht University Application Process

The application and enrolment process consists of three phases.

  • Studielink application
  • Admission
  • Enrolment

Studentlink Application: To begin your application, you must first apply through Studielink, the Dutch central platform that manages applications and enrolments for higher education institutions in the Netherlands. In Studielink, you select the study program at Maastricht University (UM) you wish to apply for. Choose your intended start intake (September or February), enter details of your prior education, and provide any additional required information.

Studielink offers two methods of signing in: with or without using DigiD:

  • If you live in a Dutch municipality, registration is only possible using DigiD. If you do not yet have a DigiD, you must first apply for one.

DigiD = Digital Identity (It’s the Netherlands’ official digital identification system.)

  • International students can register by creating a Studielink account without DigiD. In this case, Maastricht University (UM) will verify your personal details separately.

Note: Within 24 hours of submitting your application in Studielink, you will receive an email from Maastricht University (UM) containing your username/UM student number and a link to set your password. These details can be used to access the MyApplication portal.

Admission: After applying via Studielink, you must complete your application in the MyApplication portal, where you upload required documents and track your application status. Maastricht University will share the login details via email after your Studielink submission.

Note: All application-related updates and instructions will be shared through the MyApplication portal inbox. You should check the portal regularly, as important notifications may also be sent to your registered email address.

Enrolment: Make sure to pay your tuition fees on time. Otherwise, you won’t be able to start your studies. Before your studies begin, you will receive login details for your UM email account. This email will be used for all communication related to your program and the start of your studies. Your personal email will only be used for application and enrolment updates.

Maastricht University Visa Requirements for Indian Students

Students should not take any action regarding their visa or legal residence until they receive an email from the Maastricht University Visa Office. Once a place in the study program is offered, the Visa Office will contact students at their private email address according to the program start date:

  • For programs starting in September, emails are sent from late April to early May.
  • For programs starting in February, emails are sent from late October to early November.

Note: If students are admitted to their study program after these dates, they will receive an email after they are offered a place in the program. The Visa Office email will clearly explain all the steps you need to take and which documents you must submit to prove your legal residence.

Applying for a visa or a study permit?

First-year students who require a visa or residence permit cannot pay tuition fees via digital authorisation or in instalments. The full annual tuition fee must be paid in one lump sum by bank transfer before Maastricht University can submit the visa application to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

Application requirements

You will need to provide the following to the UM Visa Office:

  • A copy of your valid residence permit
  • Proof of sufficient financial means of EUR 1,250 (INR 13,7071) for each month you will be enrolled. You have several options for submitting proof: by a deposit, scholarship, personal bank account or sponsorship
  • Completed forms: the required forms will be sent to you via email from the Visa Office

Once the Maastricht University Visa Office has received all of the required documents, the University will apply for your residence permit to be transferred. Establishing your legal residence will take another five weeks on average.

Deadline

The deadline for completing your file with the UM Visa Office is two months before the first date of enrolment, which is:

  • 1 July 2026, when starting in September
  • 1 December 2026, when starting in February

Maastricht University Acceptance Rate

Maastricht University does not publish an official, university-wide acceptance rate on its website. However, in some cases, the university has indicated that certain programs report an average acceptance rate of around 70% for completed applications. This figure is not a general acceptance rate for the entire university, but rather applies only to specific courses where such data has been disclosed.

Based on admissions patterns, publicly available enrolment data, and comparisons with similar European universities, independent education platforms estimate Maastricht University’s overall acceptance rate to be around 52%.

Maastricht University Admission Decision

Once your enrolment process is fully completed, Maastricht University (UM) will formally confirm your enrolment status through the MyApplication portal. The portal serves as the university’s official admissions platform. In parallel, Studielink, the Dutch national application system, will also send a confirmation email to notify you that your enrolment has been successfully registered. Together, these confirmations indicate that your admission and enrolment at UM have been finalised.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, meaning that your file is assessed as soon as it is fully completed and meets all the minimum required scores and documentation. Once your application is complete, it gets forwarded to the Board of Admission for evaluation. Students can expect to receive an admission decision within 2 to 4 weeks after their application file has been completed and formally submitted for assessment.

Maastricht University has a clear and organised admission process for international students, with different deadlines for undergraduate and master’s programs. Indian students must apply through Studielink and complete additional steps in the MyApplication portal on time. Meeting academic, language, and program-specific requirements is essential for a successful application process. Applying early and submitting a complete application can help students receive their admission decision faster.
