IU, International University of Applied Sciences fees for Indian students start at €20,910 (₹19.24 Lakhs) for a 3-year Bachelor’s after the 18% international discount, and €10,080 (₹9.27 Lakhs) for a 1-year Master’s, with the most-applied Cologne on-campus PG programmes for Indian students being MSc Data Science, MSc Artificial Intelligence, and MSc Computer Science.

Your realistic entry as a new applicant from India is the April 2027 Sommersemester intake, with October 2027 Wintersemester after it. Germany’s National Visa D takes 8-12 weeks to process, so October 2026 is not viable for a fresh application starting now.

  • Bachelor (3 years, 180 ECTS) after 18% international discount: €20,910 (₹19.24 Lakhs) total programme cost
  • Master’s 1-year (60 ECTS) after 16% discount: €10,080 (₹9.27 Lakhs) total programme
  • Master’s 2-year (120 ECTS) after 17% discount: €16,600 (₹15.27 Lakhs) total programme
  • Upfront payment on Bachelor: additional 10% off, effective total €18,819 (₹17.31 Lakhs)
  • One-off registration fee at enrolment: €1,500 (₹1.38 Lakhs), counts toward tuition

Your all-in first-year cost for an on-campus MSc in Cologne, tuition plus living plus mandatory fees, sits at roughly ₹18-21 Lakhs, and a full three-year Bachelor lands at about ₹42-48 Lakhs including living. Exchange rate used throughout: 1 EUR = INR 92 (source: xe.com).

April 2027 Sommersemester: Planning Window for Indian Applicants

Intake: The April 2027 Sommersemester is your realistic first entry, and October 2027 Wintersemester follows it. October 2026 is not viable for fresh visa-track applications given the 8-12 week German student visa timeline. Cologne is the on-campus destination for new international students since Berlin paused new intake earlier in 2025.

Fee update: The 2026/27 rates apply to both the April 2027 and October 2027 starts: Bachelor at €20,910 (₹19.24 Lakhs) after 18% international discount, and the 1-year MSc at €10,080 (₹9.27 Lakhs) after 16% discount. The 2-year MSc at €16,600 (₹15.27 Lakhs) covers all 4 semesters.

When to pay: €1,500 (₹1.38 Lakhs) registration fee falls due within 2-3 weeks of accepting the offer, and it counts toward your tuition balance. Instalment mechanics and payment methods are covered in the Tuition Deposit section below.

Scholarships: The IU early-bird discount is automatically applied on offers accepted 8 weeks before semester start, no application form. External DAAD Study Scholarships close 30 September 2026 for the April 2027 cycle. Inlaks Shivdasani closes 12 March 2027 for the September 2027 UK/Europe intake, worth planning for October 2027 applicants.

IU, International University of Applied Sciences Tuition Fees by Programme

IU publishes one list price per programme and one international discount that stacks automatically at enrolment, so the post-discount figure below is what you actually pay. There is no separate application fee for international applicants; the €1,500 (₹1.38 Lakhs) registration fee at enrolment counts toward your tuition balance.

Undergraduate Fees at IU: April 2027 and October 2027 Intakes

All on-campus Bachelors run 6 semesters and 180 ECTS credits. The list price of €25,500 (₹23.46 Lakhs) is discounted to €20,910 (₹19.24 Lakhs) for international students under the standard 18% international discount, applied automatically at admission.

Source: IU Bachelor programme fees, iu.org/bachelor (fetched 28 July 2026). Semester fee €3,485 (₹3.21 Lakhs) x 6 semesters equals list price; 18% international discount produces the post-discount figure. No application fee is charged to Indian applicants for on-campus Bachelor programmes.

Postgraduate Fees at IU: April 2027 and October 2027 Intakes

IU splits its Masters into two structures: a 60 ECTS one-year track for applicants who already hold a 240 ECTS Bachelor, and a 120 ECTS two-year track for those with a standard 180 ECTS Bachelor (the norm for Indian graduates). Most Indian graduates enter the 2-year track. Semester fees are €5,040 (₹4.64 Lakhs) for the 1-year and €4,150 (₹3.82 Lakhs) for the 2-year.

Source: IU Master programme fees, iu.org/master (fetched 28 July 2026). Post-discount reflects 16% international discount on the 1-year track and 17% on the 2-year track. Confirm eligibility for the 1-year track only if your Bachelor carries 240 ECTS; otherwise the 2-year Master is the applicable structure.

Note: The IU international discount is a rate cut on the list price, not a separate scholarship. It is applied automatically at offer stage, so you do not fill a form or write an essay. What you pay is the post-discount figure; the list price never appears on your invoice.

IU, International University of Applied Sciences Fee Trend by Year

IU maintains published tuition rates across multiple academic cycles rather than issuing a formal annual revision, which keeps the price of a programme fixed for its full duration once you enrol. The 2026/27 rate is confirmed and locks for anyone starting in April 2027 or October 2027.

Academic YearBachelor List (EUR)Bachelor Post-Discount (EUR)Post-Discount (INR)YoY Change
2024/25€24,000€19,680₹18.11 LakhsBaseline
2025/26€25,500€20,910₹19.24 Lakhs+6.25%
2026/27 (April 2027 and October 2027)€25,500€20,910₹19.24 Lakhs0.0%

Source: IU Bachelor fee schedule, iu.org/bachelor and internal fee archive (fetched 28 July 2026). IU has held the 2025/26 rate flat for the 2026/27 cycle. A revision is possible for 2027/28 but has not been announced.

Key Insight: Enrol in the April 2027 or October 2027 intake and your Bachelor rate is locked at €20,910 (₹19.24 Lakhs) for the entire 3-year programme, even if IU raises 2027/28 list prices. Waiting to the January 2028 admissions window pushes you into any subsequent revision and typically costs an extra ₹1-1.2 Lakhs across the full degree.

The pattern is a step revision every 12-24 months rather than a fixed annual hike, so the total programme cost for anyone enrolling in the current cycle is a firm number. That predictability matters for education loan planning because the sanction amount can be sized to a fixed EUR total, not a moving estimate.

Cost of Living in Cologne for Indian Students at IU, International University of Applied Sciences

Cologne is your on-campus base since Berlin paused new international admissions. Monthly living costs sit at €950-1,150 (₹87,400-₹1.06 Lakhs) for a shared flat and a modest lifestyle, notably lower than Munich or Frankfurt. The €208.80 (₹19,210) semester ticket covers your public transport across North Rhine-Westphalia state, which materially reduces monthly outlay.

Sources: IU Cologne campus cost-of-living guidance (iu.org/en/student-life/cost-of-living) cross-checked with Numbeo Cologne data, and the BAMF blocked account minimum of €992/month for 2026. Rent varies by neighbourhood: Ehrenfeld and Kalk are the cheaper student areas; central Innenstadt runs €150-200 higher.

Note: Statutory health insurance at €125/month (₹11,500) is a hard requirement to enrol, not an option. Travel insurance from India does not qualify. Sign up with TK, AOK, or Barmer before your first semester; the confirmation is required at matriculation.

The critical single number for your visa file is the blocked account balance. Germany’s Federal Foreign Office set the minimum at €11,904 (₹10.95 Lakhs) for the 2026 academic year, released to you at €992/month once you are on the ground.

Currency Tip: Fund your blocked account through Fintiba or Expatrio for the April 2027 intake, not a raw SWIFT transfer through your Indian bank. Their INR-EUR spread runs 0.7-1.0% versus 2-3% at retail banks, saving you roughly ₹15,000-₹25,000 on the €11,904 deposit alone.

Total Cost of Studying at IU, International University of Applied Sciences

Your first-year all-in budget at the Cologne campus is the sum of annual tuition, 12 months of living, the one-off registration fee, and mandatory visa and insurance charges. The two-year MSc reads as ₹18-21 Lakhs for Year 1 and around ₹32-35 Lakhs for the full programme including living. A 3-year Bachelor lands at ₹42-48 Lakhs total.

Programme ScenarioAnnual Tuition (INR)Annual Living (INR)Mandatory Fees Y1 (INR)Total Year 1 (INR)
3-year Bachelor (Cologne)₹6.28 Lakhs₹11.59 Lakhs₹1.51 Lakhs₹19.38 Lakhs

1-year MSc / MBA (240 ECTS Bachelor holders)₹9.27 Lakhs₹11.59 Lakhs₹1.51 Lakhs₹22.37 Lakhs

Sources: IU tuition (iu.org fee pages), BAMF blocked account minimum (€11,904 for 2026), German National Visa D fee €75 (auswaertiges-amt.de), Cologne living baseline. Mandatory Fees Y1 combines €1,500 (₹1.38 Lakhs) registration fee plus €75 (₹6,900) visa fee plus €55 (₹5,060) residence permit fee.

Full programme cost including living: a 3-year Bachelor totals roughly ₹47.15 Lakhs (₹19.24 Lakhs tuition plus ₹27.77 Lakhs for 30 months of living, less €1,500 registration credit); a 2-year MSc totals about ₹34.75 Lakhs (₹15.27 Lakhs tuition plus 24 months living); and a 1-year MSc totals around ₹21 Lakhs. On a ₹35 Lakhs education loan at 10.5% for 10 years, the monthly EMI works out to approximately ₹47,000.

Key Insight: Accepting your April 2027 or October 2027 offer at least 8 weeks before semester start triggers IU’s early-bird stack: the 18% international discount plus additional upfront-payment discount pushes a Bachelor’s controllable saving to roughly ₹2.1 Lakhs against list price, locked before the first instalment falls due.

IU, International University of Applied Sciences Scholarships for Indian Students

IU’s own scholarships fall into two groups: an automatic international discount that everyone gets, and named merit scholarships you apply for separately. The automatic discount is already reflected in the fees you see in Section 1. The named scholarships stack on top.

External Indian and German Government Scholarships

These are open for the April 2027 and October 2027 IU intake cycle, with hard India deadlines. Missing a submission window closes that funding until the next intake cycle.

Deadlines confirmed for the April 2027 intake cycle. Inlaks operates on a September UK/Europe cycle, so a March 2027 submission targets an October 2027 IU start rather than April.

Tip for Indian Students: For the April 2027 intake, submit your DAAD Study Scholarship by 30 September 2026, that is the highest-value single external award you can add on top of IU’s automatic 16-18% discount. For an October 2027 start, Inlaks (closing 12 March 2027) is the funding priority worth a full-effort application.

IU, International University of Applied Sciences Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

IU’s enrolment deposit is €1,500 (₹1.38 Lakhs) as a registration fee, and it counts toward your first-semester tuition, so it is not an additional charge. Paying it secures your admission letter, which you need for the German National Visa D application.

Methods of Payment for International Students

  • SEPA / international bank transfer: Direct wire from your Indian bank to IU’s Deutsche Bank account. Adds a 1-2% forex spread plus SWIFT charges of INR 1,500-2,500 per transfer.
  • Flywire: IU’s approved international payment provider. Better INR-EUR rate than a raw SWIFT wire; typically 0.5-1% cheaper.
  • Forex card (multi-currency): Practical for the €1,500 registration fee, less so for larger tuition balances due to loading limits.
  • Education loan disbursement: Public and private lenders disburse directly to IU on request; ensure the sanction letter names IU as beneficiary.

Steps to Pay the Tuition Fee for International Students

  1. Accept the IU offer online through the applicant portal.
  2. Pay the €1,500 (₹1.38 Lakhs) registration fee within 2-3 weeks; receive the admission letter.
  3. Open a blocked account (Fintiba, Expatrio, or Deutsche Bank) and deposit €11,904 (₹10.95 Lakhs) for the 2026 visa proof.
  4. Submit your German National Visa D application at VFS Global India with the admission letter and blocked account confirmation.
  5. On arrival in Cologne, register your address (Anmeldung), activate statutory health insurance, and matriculate at IU.
  6. Pay the first tuition instalment before the semester start; subsequent instalments follow the schedule below.
  7. Retain every payment receipt for your residence permit renewal file each year.

Source: IU tuition payment terms, iu.org/en/tuition-fees (fetched 28 July 2026). Upfront one-shot payment triggers an additional 10% off on Bachelor, 5% off on 2-year Master, and 2% off on 1-year Master, stacked on top of the international discount.

Tip for Indian Students: For an April 2027 start, schedule the €1,500 registration fee transfer at least 4 weeks before your visa appointment; SWIFT wires can take 3-5 business days to reflect on IU’s side, and your admission letter is only issued after the fee is received. A delayed registration fee has cost past applicants their visa slot at VFS.

Hidden Costs of Studying at IU, International University of Applied Sciences

Your April 2027 intake hidden-cost priority is the blocked account funding, that single line item is 10-11 Lakhs and it is due before your visa slot. Budget for the rest across your pre-departure quarter.

  • Blocked account (Sperrkonto) top-up: €11,904 (₹10.95 Lakhs) for the 2026 visa cycle; the balance is yours but must sit locked before visa filing.
  • German National Visa D fee: €75 (₹6,900) at VFS Global India, plus VFS service charges of ₹1,800-₹2,200.
  • Residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel): €55 (₹5,060) issued after arrival; renewed annually.
  • Anmeldung and TK registration: Free, but requires a landlord confirmation letter, which some WG landlords delay by 4-6 weeks.
  • IELTS or TOEFL retake: ₹17,000-₹18,700 per attempt if your first score falls short of IU’s 6.0 IELTS or 80 TOEFL requirement.
  • APS certificate: ₹18,000-₹22,000 for the Akademische Prüfstelle document required in your German visa file (mandatory for Indian applicants since 2022).
  • Flights and initial setup: ₹65,000-₹85,000 one-way to Cologne via Frankfurt or Dusseldorf, plus ₹40,000-₹60,000 for first-month deposit, winter clothes, and household setup.
  • Semester ticket and matriculation add-ons: €208.80 (₹19,210) at each semester start, mandatory.

Budget approximately ₹13-15 Lakhs for first-year hidden costs including the blocked account, or ₹2-3 Lakhs if you exclude the blocked account (since that balance is released back to you).

Note: The APS certificate is the item Indian families most often miss. It is a mandatory pre-visa document verifying your Indian academic records, takes 3-4 weeks to issue, and costs roughly ₹18,000-₹22,000. Start the APS application the day you receive your IU offer, not the day of your visa slot.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students at IU, International University of Applied Sciences

For the April 2027 intake, your single highest-value action is stacking the automatic 18% international discount with the additional 10% upfront-payment discount, saving roughly ₹2.1 Lakhs on a Bachelor without any application form.

  • Elect the upfront payment option: An extra 10% off Bachelor (₹1.72 Lakhs saved), 5% off 2-year Master (₹80,500), or 2% off 1-year Master (₹18,540), stacked on the international discount.
  • Book a WG shared apartment in Ehrenfeld or Kalk: Cuts monthly rent to €400-450 (₹36,800-₹41,400) versus €600-750 (₹55,200-₹69,000) in central Cologne; saves ₹1.5-2 Lakhs annually.
  • Work the 120-day full-time / 240-day half-time student cap: A part-time role at €13-15 (₹1,196-₹1,380) per hour covers €400-500/month living, cutting your INR outflow by roughly ₹4-4.5 Lakhs per year.
  • Claim Section 80E on your education loan interest: Full deduction on interest paid for 8 years from repayment start; typically saves ₹40,000-₹90,000 per year in Indian tax during repayment.
  • Plan for the German post-study Job Seeker Visa: IU’s Bachelor and Master graduates get 18 months to find a job in Germany after graduation, which converts into an EU Blue Card and offsets your loan quickly at Germany’s median tech salary of €55,000-€65,000 (₹50.60-₹59.80 Lakhs) per year.

Tip for Indian Students: For the April 2027 start, elect the upfront payment before your first instalment is issued. It saves ₹1.72 Lakhs on a Bachelor or ₹80,500 on a 2-year Master, an irreversible saving locked in one decision, no scholarship application required.

Is IU, International University of Applied Sciences Worth the Cost for Indian Students

Yes, on the numbers, IU at ₹35-47 Lakhs full-programme cost is one of the better ROI European options for an Indian graduate, particularly for tech Masters where the 18-month post-study Job Seeker Visa converts into a Blue Card at a starting €55,000-€65,000 (₹50.60-₹59.80 Lakhs) salary in Berlin, Munich, or Frankfurt tech roles.

IU’s institutional accreditation from the German Council of Science and Humanities and programmatic accreditation for its degrees means your qualification is recognised across the EU and by Indian public-sector recognition bodies. Indian students form roughly 23% of IU’s international cohort, giving strong peer networks for job searches and settling in.

On post-study rights: Germany currently grants an 18-month Job Seeker Visa to non-EU Master’s and Bachelor graduates, extended to 20 hours per week during the search and full-time thereafter, which is the most generous post-study framework in continental Europe. That window is what makes the loan math work.

Loan repayment math: a ₹35 Lakhs education loan at 10.5% over 10 years is an EMI of roughly ₹47,000 per month. Against an entry Berlin tech salary of €4,200-€4,800/month gross (₹3.86-₹4.41 Lakhs), net take-home after German tax and social contributions is typically €2,400-€2,900 (₹2.21-₹2.67 Lakhs), which comfortably absorbs the EMI while leaving room to live and save.

Key Insight: Take the April 2027 or October 2027 MSc Data Science intake and your total cost is ₹34.75 Lakhs including living, with break-even in approximately 4-5 years of German tech employment. That is a shorter payback horizon than most comparable UK, US, or Australian Master’s options at 6-8 years.

Where IU is less competitive: for pure research careers, a German public university (RWTH Aachen, TU Munich, LMU) with zero tuition may deliver a lower net cost, though at much longer admission timelines and stricter German-language expectations. IU’s edge is English-medium instruction, faster admissions, and a private-university-standard student services and career support layer.

Your all-in cost for a 2-year MSc at IU Cologne is around ₹34.75 Lakhs including living, dropping to about ₹32.65 Lakhs after the upfront-payment discount and to roughly ₹26-28 Lakhs after DAAD Study Scholarship funding. On a ₹35 Lakhs loan, that is an EMI of about ₹47,000 against a realistic post-study Berlin tech salary of ₹3.86-₹4.41 Lakhs monthly gross. The single action to take for the April 2027 intake is to lock the offer 8 weeks before semester start, submitting the DAAD Study Scholarship by 30 September 2026, and pay the €1,500 registration fee within 2-3 weeks of the offer letter to secure your visa slot.

IU, International University of Applied Sciences Fees FAQs

Ques. What is the total cost of studying at IU, International University of Applied Sciences for Indian students?

Ans. A 3-year Bachelor at IU Cologne totals approximately ₹47.15 Lakhs including tuition (₹19.24 Lakhs after 18% international discount) and living costs; a 2-year MSc totals approximately ₹34.75 Lakhs. First-year all-in budget sits at ₹19-22 Lakhs depending on programme.

Ques. Which intake should Indian students target at IU for a fresh application in 2026?

Ans. The April 2027 Sommersemester is the realistic first entry for Indian applicants starting the process now, with October 2027 Wintersemester after it. October 2026 is not workable for fresh visa-track applications given the 8-12 week German National Visa D processing timeline.

Ques. Does IU automatically discount tuition for Indian students?

Ans. Yes, IU applies a 16-18% international discount automatically at offer stage: 18% on Bachelor, 17% on the 2-year Master, and 16% on the 1-year Master. No application form is required. The discounted rate is what appears on your invoice.

Ques. How much is the blocked account deposit for the German student visa in 2026?

Ans. €11,904 (₹10.95 Lakhs) for the 2026 academic year, per the German Federal Foreign Office. The balance is released to you at €992/month once on the ground in Germany. Fintiba and Expatrio are the two commonly used blocked-account providers for Indian students.

Ques. What is IU’s upfront payment discount worth for a Bachelor programme?

Ans. Electing upfront full payment on a Bachelor drops the total from €20,910 (₹19.24 Lakhs) to €18,819 (₹17.31 Lakhs), a saving of about ₹1.72 Lakhs. On a 2-year Master, the upfront discount saves roughly ₹80,500, and on the 1-year Master, about ₹18,540.

Ques. Do Indian students pay an application fee to IU?

Ans. No, there is no separate application fee for on-campus Bachelor or Master programmes at IU. The €1,500 (₹1.38 Lakhs) registration fee falls due after you accept the offer, and it counts toward your first-semester tuition, so it is not an additional cost.

Ques. Are IU degrees recognised in India after graduation?

Ans. Yes, IU holds institutional accreditation from the German Council of Science and Humanities and its degrees are recognised across the EU as well as by Indian public-sector recognition bodies. Its Bachelor and Master degrees are directly comparable to those from other accredited German universities.

Ques. Which external Indian scholarships apply to an IU Cologne intake in the April 2027 or October 2027 cycle?

Ans. DAAD Study Scholarships (up to ₹8.28 Lakhs, deadline 30 September 2026 for April 2027), Inlaks Shivdasani (up to ₹1 Crore total, deadline 12 March 2027 for the September/October 2027 intake), JN Tata Endowment, KC Mahindra (up to ₹10 Lakhs), and Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation are all open. Postgraduate applicants qualify for all five; Bachelor applicants are limited to DAAD and a few smaller trust awards.

Ques. What is the EMI on an education loan for IU tuition and living costs?

Ans. On a ₹35 Lakhs education loan at 10.5% over 10 years, the monthly EMI is approximately ₹47,000. Realistic post-study Berlin tech salary at €4,200-€4,800 gross (₹3.86-₹4.41 Lakhs) delivers a net take-home that comfortably absorbs the EMI while leaving room to save.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at IU to offset living costs?

Ans. Yes, German student visa rules allow 120 full-time days or 240 half-time days of work per calendar year. Part-time roles at €13-15 (₹1,196-₹1,380) per hour typically cover €400-500/month of living costs, cutting your INR outflow by approximately ₹4-4.5 Lakhs per year.

Ques. Is the Cologne campus the only on-campus option for new Indian students at IU?

Ans. Cologne is the current on-campus visa-track destination for new international students. Berlin paused new international admissions in early 2025 following the LEA ruling on hybrid programme structures. Other IU locations (Bad Honnef, Munich, Erfurt) run limited on-campus enrolments; confirm availability for your specific programme at the offer stage.

  • Usually the search method is online or via groups on social media or if anyone you know is residing there, this process will be very easy. There are many challenges, such as fake advertisements and scams; be aware of them.
  • Always ask for contracts before the final steps, and try to get along with your batchmates and share an apartment; it will be cost-effective.

  • I don't know much related to full-time jobs because I am in my first year of college but there are no placements from college; you have to find jobs on your own. U have to apply through LinkedIn or you can directly apply to companies and give an interview. Colleges can only prefer your CV to some companies but you have to do most of the work.

  • I got my accommodation through housinganywhere just searched for nice private room and got the apartment paid around 750 euro monthly, all facilities included, There was no challenge.
  • I would recommend students to use housinganywhere. My place was near to university it was 20 minutes ride. I didn’t interact with indian students so I don’t know popular locations.

I searched a lot for accommodations and finally found various groups on social media sites via which I rented a shared apartment with 2 of my friends. Please be aware of the scams and false apartment videos that are made to loot you. Always ask for a Legal Contract before finalising.

For the application, you need to submit your application on the university's website. On the website, you have to enter your every detail such as 10th, and 12th Graduation percentage and IELTS score. After getting selected one has to send the notarized copy of the transcripts, College Degree, Medium of Instruction letter from the graduation college,10th and 12th board mark sheet and certificate, to the college via post. I prepared for the IELTS exam from free resources on Google and youtube.

I choose this University because of many reasons. However, I will mention some of them only. The main reason is the course curriculum is up to date and this university focuses on the practical exposure of the student and prepares the student who is industry ready. The admission process is so easy and so many courses are available which is in high demand nowadays. The application process is so easy that anyone could directly apply to the university and no need to take any help from a consultant. I did everything on my own and the admission advisor of IU was so helpful, He assisted me in choosing the best study program for me and helped me to get a discount.

It was good. The management could have been a bit better in terms of giving us the 3000 euros discount as they have to our other batch mates. Overall it was a nice experience. The professors were cooperative and supportive.
