What Students Say
Likes
- TU Dresden is one of the top university in Germany under TU9 recognized for having one of the best Faculty of Computer Science department. Since my Masters program "Computational Modeling and Simulation" is being offered by the department of Informatics, I chose to pursue this course here. On top of that, the course is particularly highly Interdisciplinary, students can elect their subjects from their field of interests and complete their course credits. Also, Dresden is a budget-friendly city for students as the expenses for accommodation and the cost of living are pretty low compared to other major cities.
Required Exams for Admission
My overall experience has been quiet good. As an expat student I have got the opportunity to meet students from different International Background's carrying different knowledge experiences and had the opportunity to collaborate with them during the course of study. The Faculty is also friendly and allows students to take semester breaks in between for relaxation purpose. Students get an opportunity to be associated with the high level of research opportunities which are directly granted and funded by the federal government to the University.
Course Curriculum
The course curriculum is highly updated and concerns on the students previous knowledge of knowing the basics of mathematics and at least one high level programming languages for coding at an Intermediate level. No industrial experience will be given in the course period but as for the research experience, it is up to the students interest to find a student research position( for which they will be paid as a part time worker) in their desired field and try to gain some experience. Most of the students applying to this course fall for the name of the course as it has Modeling and Simulation in it, but since the course is offered by a TU, the teachings are highly research oriented towards improving or optimizing the backend of a software for their efficient usage on computers (with regard to the computational time) rather than learning to use the same software for modeling and performing simulations on a computer.
Faculty
Since it is an highly Interdisciplinary course with the course itself having 5 tracks across different fields from Life Sciences to Engineering to Energy Economics, it depends totally on the chosen track by a student while applying to this program but although all the track students are differentiated only by their compulsory module subjects (4 to 5 subjects) while the electives area are the same for all of the students to choose a subject from for completing the rest of their course credits. So since the admission criteria is such that there is no restriction in the number of seats, students who meet the course requirements can get an admit to this course and on an yearly term (every Winter Term), almost 100 students join this course divided across the above mentioned tracks. I would like to mention my professor Dr. Ivo Sbalzarini, who is also the dean of the Faculty of Computer Science here at TU Dresden and the founder of the course Computational Modeling and Simulation and he is an inspiration to all the students who have taken this course.
Campus Life
The student dorms are pretty good and every student who comes to study their Master's or Bachelors here will get an accommodation easily. The accommodations are also in close proximity to TU Dresden. The transportation facilities are also very good and the University has a central library (one of the biggest in the whole state of Saxony). The university also provides Sports courses for the students which is not mandatory. On a monthly basis, the University organizes a lot of events for students.
Placement
No placement opportunities will be offered to students of my course and the university itself has a lot of research opportunities which students can take up as a part time job or a full time job after completing their Master's. For research opportunities, students need to be highly skilled in the respective domain and the median salary ranges around 500 Euros monthly.
Accommodation
On an average, student accommodations range from 180 Euros to 400 Euros depending upon whether it is a shared room( kitchen, bathroom shared among 5 to 8 people in a floor) or a single apartment( all amenities inside a single room). It depends on the students wish to choose one based on their interest.
Exams
My scores: GRE 164 Quant 150 Verbal 4 Writing; IELTS 7.0; German Level Goethe Certificate A2. Had to submit SOP and LORs. Try to include all the Co-curricular activities and your achievements in the descending order (latest date/year to past achievements). No specific interviews were conducted for my Masters course during the application period.
Fees
There isn't any tuition fees for Master's program Computational Modeling and Simulation offered at TU Dresden. Although there is a per-semester fee contribution of about 300 Euros which includes Students semester ticket for free usage of the public transport and also free usage of rental bikes for an hour.
Scholarship
No I have not received any scholarship but TU Dresden offers scholarships to well excelling students in the name of "Deutschland stipendium". Students need to apply for this every year and get selected for getting a scholarship.
