Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory course at a German university that qualifies international students for direct admission to a Bachelor's degree program. It exists because Germany requires 13 years of schooling before university entry, while the Indian education system completes schooling in 12 years. This one-year gap is what Studienkolleg bridges.
- Indian students who have completed Class 12 — regardless of board or marks — do not automatically qualify for direct admission to a German Bachelor's program.
- The Studienkolleg fills this gap through two semesters of intensive subject and language training, ending with a final qualifying exam called the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP).
- Passing the FSP gives you a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification that is recognised by all German universities and universities of applied sciences.
The Studienkolleg is not a private coaching institute or a language school. It is a formal academic institution attached to a German university. Students enrolled at Studienkolleg are registered as students of the host university and pay only the standard semester contribution fee — not tuition fees.

There are two types of Studienkolleg in Germany:
- Public (staatlich)
- Private (privat).
Public Studienkollegs are free of tuition fees. Private Studienkollegs charge between EUR 3,000 and EUR 8,000 per year. There are 22 public and 24 private Studienkollegs across Germany.
| Feature | Public Studienkolleg | Private Studienkolleg |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition Fee | Free (only semester contribution fee) | EUR 3,000 – 8,000 per year (approx. INR 3,33,000 – 8,88,000) |
| Admission | Via host university application + Aufnahmeprüfung | Varies; some have their own entrance tests |
| Recognition | Fully recognised by all German universities | Fully recognised if state-approved |
| Seats | Limited; highly competitive | More flexible intake |
| Language of instruction | German | German (some offer English support) |
Conversion Note: 1 EUR = INR 112.11 (as of May 11, 2026).

Studienkolleg Eligibility for Indian Students
From Winter Semester 2026/27, Indian students applying for Studienkolleg must have a minimum of 70% overall marks in their Class 12 certificate. This is a new requirement introduced by APS India and reflected in the Anabin database from March 15, 2026. It applies to all Class 12 boards — CBSE, ICSE and all state boards — without exception.
Before you can even apply to a Studienkolleg, you must obtain an APS certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi. The APS certificate verifies your Class 10 and Class 12 documents. Without it, no German university will process your Studienkolleg application.
Who Needs Studienkolleg and Who Can Skip It?
Not every Indian student needs Studienkolleg. The requirement depends on your academic background at the time of application.
| Academic Background | Studienkolleg Required? | Pathway |
|---|---|---|
| Class 12 only (70%+ marks) | Yes | Apply for Studienkolleg via the host university. Pass Aufnahmeprüfung and FSP |
| Class 12 (70%+) + 1 successful academic year of Bachelor's in India | No | Direct subject-restricted admission to the related field. APS certificate required |
| JEE Advanced qualified (strong rank) | No (for select TU9 universities) | Direct admission possible at some universities. APS certificate still required |
| Class 12 below 70% | Not eligible for APS certificate under new rules | Cannot apply for Studienkolleg or Bachelor's in Germany from Winter 2026/27 |
The 70% rule applies to applications submitted from March 15, 2026, onwards. Applications submitted before that date were assessed under the old criteria. If you already hold a valid APS certificate issued before March 15, 2026, it remains valid regardless of your Class 12 percentage.

T-Kurs, M-Kurs, W-Kurs, G-Kurs: Which Studienkolleg Course Is Right for You
Studienkolleg is divided into four course types, each designed for a specific group of Bachelor's programs. From Winter Semester 2025/26, you can only apply for one course type per application cycle.
Your course type is determined by the Bachelor's program you intend to pursue after Studienkolleg. Choose your target degree first, then identify the corresponding Kurs.
| Course Type | Target Bachelor's Programs | Subjects Tested in Aufnahmeprüfung |
|---|---|---|
| T-Kurs (Technik) | Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Architecture, Informatics, Information Systems | German (B2) + Mathematics (T-level) |
| M-Kurs (Medizin) | Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biology, Biotechnology, Nutrition, Sports Science, Health Sciences | German (B2) + Mathematics (M/W-level) |
| W-Kurs (Wirtschaft) | Business Administration, Economics, Management, Social Sciences, Bioeconomy | German (B2) + Mathematics (M/W-level) |
| G-Kurs (Geisteswissenschaften) | Humanities, Political Science, Languages, Literature, Arts | German (B2) only — no Mathematics test |
- The most common choice for Indian students is the T-Kurs (Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics), while the W-Kurs suits those targeting Business and Management. The M-Kurs is the most competitive with limited seats and the heaviest workload.
- For all three courses, you must pass both the German language test and the Mathematics test in the same sitting. Passing only one part is not enough, and if you retake the exam, you must clear both parts again from scratch.
How to Apply for Studienkolleg in Germany from India
You cannot apply directly to a Studienkolleg. All applications must go through the host university's online portal. For TUM, this is TUMonline. For other universities, it is either their own portal or uni-assist. The Studienkolleg itself does not accept direct applications from students.
Step 1: Obtain Your APS Certificate
Apply for the APS certificate at aps-india.de. The fee is INR 18,000 (non-refundable). Normal processing takes 3 to 4 weeks. During peak season, it can take up to 3 months. For Winter 2026/27, apply for APS immediately — the application window for Studienkolleg opens May 15 and closes July 15, 2026.

Step 2: Reach German B2 Level
The language of instruction at Studienkolleg is entirely German. You must prove German proficiency at B2 level before applying. Accepted certificates include Goethe-Zertifikat B2, TestDaF (TDN 3 in all sections), TELC Deutsch B2 and DSD II. Reaching B2 from zero takes approximately 10 to 14 months of consistent study. Start German immediately if you have not already.
Check the German language levels guide to plan your preparation.
Step 3: Apply Through the Host University
Submit your online application through the university's portal within the application period. For Winter Semester: May 15 to July 15. For Summer Semester: November 15 to January 15. During the application, select the Bachelor's program you intend to pursue after Studienkolleg — this determines your Kurs assignment. You can only apply for one course type per cycle.
Step 4: Upload All Required Documents
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Class 12 certificate and marksheet | Must show 70%+ overall marks. Original + certified copy. Sworn translation if not in German or English |
| Class 10 certificate and marksheet | Original + certified copy |
| APS Certificate (DigZert) | Digitally signed PDF from APS India. Do not rename or merge |
| German language certificate (B2) | Goethe B2, TELC B2, TestDaF TDN 3, or DSD II |
| Valid passport | First and last page. Must be valid beyond the course end date |
| Curriculum Vitae (CV) in German | Detailed CV listing schools attended, exams passed and any university study |
| Transcript of prior university study | Required if you have completed any university semesters in India |
Step 5: Receive Invitation to Aufnahmeprüfung
If your documents are accepted and you meet all formal requirements, the university sends you an invitation to the Aufnahmeprüfung (entrance exam). This invitation is downloaded from your TUMonline account. You cannot sit the exam without this invitation — walk-ins are not permitted.
Step 6: Sit the Aufnahmeprüfung and Enrol
The Aufnahmeprüfung takes place in early September for the Winter Semester and early February for the Summer Semester. If you pass, you enrol at the university. The enrollment deadline is October 1 for the Winter Semester and March 1 for the Summer Semester. Classes begin approximately two weeks after the exam.

The Aufnahmeprüfung: What the Studienkolleg Entrance Exam Actually Tests
The Aufnahmeprüfung is the entrance exam for Studienkolleg. Every applicant must sit this exam — there are no exemptions.
- Even if your documents are perfect and your German is strong, you cannot enter Studienkolleg without passing the Aufnahmeprüfung.
- This is confirmed by the official Studienkolleg München website.
- The exam tests two things: your German language ability at the B2 level and, for T-Kurs, M-Kurs and W-Kurs applicants, your Mathematics ability.
- The G-Kurs exam tests German only.
| Kurs | German Test | Mathematics Test | Pass Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-Kurs | B2 level | T-level (advanced) | Both parts must be passed |
| M-Kurs | B2 level | M/W-level (basic) | Both parts must be passed |
| W-Kurs | B2 level | M/W-level (basic) | Both parts must be passed |
| G-Kurs | B2 level | Not required | German test must be passed |
Exam Day Rules:
- No dictionaries, calculators, pencils or erasable pens allowed
- Bring a permanent ink pen (blue or black)
- Smartphones must be handed to the invigilator before the exam
Attempts:
- You get a maximum of 3 attempts across all Studienkollegs in Germany
- Not attending without cancelling counts as a failed attempt — cancel by email at least one day before, with your application number
Admission:
- Passing the exam does not guarantee a seat — admission depends on available seats
- Competition is highest for T-Kurs and M-Kurs
Feststellungsprüfung: The Final Exam That Unlocks German University Admission
The Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) is the final qualifying exam at the end of Studienkolleg. Passing it gives you a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification for Germany. This qualification, combined with your Class 12 certificate, forms your complete higher education entrance qualification for German universities.
- The FSP is taken after two semesters (one academic year) at Studienkolleg.
- In exceptional cases, students who demonstrate strong performance may be permitted to sit the FSP after one semester. The exam is subject-specific and tests the content covered during the Studienkolleg course.
Your final grade for university admission is calculated as: Class 12 grade (50%) + FSP grade (50%) = Final admission grade
- Both components carry equal weight. A strong FSP result can compensate for a weaker Class 12 grade and vice versa. This is important for Indian students who may have a lower Class 12 percentage but perform well in the FSP.
- The FSP is taken at a university Studienkolleg that qualifies you for both universities (Universität) and universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschule).
After passing the FSP, you must submit a new application to your target Bachelor's program. Completing Studienkolleg at TUM does not automatically admit you to TUM's Bachelor's programs. You must apply through TUMonline again, including a new VPD from uni-assist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is Studienkolleg in Germany?
Ans. Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory course at a German university that qualifies international students for admission to a Bachelor's degree in Germany. It exists because Germany requires 13 years of schooling before university entry, while Indian students complete schooling in 12 years. Studienkolleg bridges this one-year gap through two semesters of intensive subject and German language training. It ends with the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP), which is the qualifying exam for German university admission. Public Studienkollegs charge no tuition fees — only a semester contribution fee.
Ques. Is Studienkolleg mandatory for all Indian students applying to Germany?
Ans. Studienkolleg is mandatory for Indian students who have only completed Class 12 and wish to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Germany. It is not required if you have completed at least one successful academic year of a Bachelor's degree in India — in that case, you may qualify for direct subject-restricted admission. JEE Advanced qualified students may also bypass Studienkolleg at select TU9 universities. Studienkolleg is not required for Master's degree applicants. The APS certificate is mandatory in all cases.
Ques. What is the minimum percentage required for Studienkolleg in Germany in 2026?
Ans. From Winter Semester 2026/27, Indian students need a minimum of 70% overall marks in Class 12 to obtain the APS certificate required for Studienkolleg admission. This rule applies to all Class 12 boards — CBSE, ICSE and all state boards. It came into effect on March 15, 2026 and applies to APS applications submitted from that date onwards. Students who already hold a valid APS certificate issued before March 15, 2026, are not affected.
Ques. What German language level is required for Studienkolleg?
Ans. You must prove German language proficiency at the B2 level to apply for Studienkolleg. Accepted certificates include Goethe-Zertifikat B2, TELC Deutsch B2, TestDaF (TDN 3 in all sections) and DSD II. Reaching B2 from zero takes approximately 10 to 14 months of consistent study. The Aufnahmeprüfung also tests your German at B2 level — a certificate alone is not sufficient if your actual language ability is below B2. The entire Studienkolleg course is conducted in German.
Ques. What is the Aufnahmeprüfung, and can I skip it?
Ans. The Aufnahmeprüfung is the entrance exam for Studienkolleg and cannot be skipped under any circumstances. Every applicant must sit this exam, regardless of their academic background or language certificate. For T-Kurs, M-Kurs and W-Kurs, the exam tests German (B2 level) and Mathematics. For G-Kurs, only German is tested. You are allowed a maximum of three attempts across all state-recognised Studienkollegs in Germany. If you are invited but do not attend without cancelling in advance by email, it counts as a failed attempt.
Ques. What is the Feststellungsprüfung, and what happens after passing it?
Ans. The Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) is the final qualifying exam at the end of Studienkolleg, taken after two semesters. Passing it gives you a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification for Germany. Your final admission grade is calculated as 50% from your Class 12 certificate and 50% from your FSP result. After passing the FSP, you must submit a new application to your target Bachelor's program through the university portal. Completing Studienkolleg at a university qualifies you for both universities and universities of applied sciences. Completing it at a university of applied sciences limits you to universities of applied sciences only.
Ques. What is the Studienkolleg application deadline for Winter 2026/27?
Ans. The application deadline for Studienkolleg for the Winter Semester 2026/27 is July 15, 2026. The application window opened on May 15, 2026. Applications must be submitted through the host university's online portal — not directly to the Studienkolleg. The Aufnahmeprüfung takes place in early September 2026. Classes begin mid-September 2026. The enrollment deadline is October 1, 2026. To meet the July 15 deadline, your APS certificate must be in hand before that date — apply for APS immediately if you have not done so.
Ques. Can I apply to more than one Studienkolleg course type at the same time?
Ans. No. From Winter Semester 2025/26, you can only apply for one Studienkolleg course type per application cycle. This means you must decide between T-Kurs, M-Kurs, W-Kurs and G-Kurs before applying. Your course type is determined by the Bachelor's program you intend to pursue after Studienkolleg. Choose your target degree carefully before submitting your application — switching course types requires a new application in the next intake cycle.
