Note. Beginning the article now with verified live EUR to INR rate of €1 = ₹110.75 (as of 17 September 2026 IST) and forward-dated deadlines from HU Berlin and uni-assist.

Humboldt University of Berlin admissions rest on academic strength, an APS certificate, and language proof, with masters generally requiring a Bachelor’s in a related field plus IELTS 6.5 for English tracks or C1 German (DSH-2 / TestDaF 4) for German-taught paths, and bachelors requiring Class XII plus a Studienkolleg or one completed year of Indian undergraduate study.

  • Primary intake: Winter Semester 2027/28 admission-restricted masters close 14 June 2027.
  • Base tuition: no tuition, €355 (around ₹39,316) semester fee, application fee €75 (around ₹8,306) via uni-assist.
  • Eligibility floor: UG: Studienkolleg plus C1 German. PG: Bachelor’s plus IELTS 6.5 for English programs.
  • Acceptance rate: no official figure, estimated 30 to 40 percent overall, competitive tracks near 2 to 5 percent.

Popular Indian-student picks are MSc Psychology, MSc Economics, and MSc Computer Science. Students on campus flag no tuition, strong research culture, and central Berlin location as top wins, though APS timing and the C1 German bar for German-taught paths remain the two biggest planning risks at Humboldt University of Berlin.

Admission Status: Open. Summer Semester 2027 applications are open on uni-assist through 15 January 2027 for admission-restricted programs and 28 February 2027 for admission-free bachelors. The primary Winter Semester 2027/28 intake closes between 14 June and 31 August 2027 by program tier. Application fee on uni-assist is €75 (around ₹8,306) for the first course, €30 (around ₹3,323) for each additional.

Humboldt University of Berlin Application Deadlines

HU Berlin runs two annual intakes. Winter Semester begins in October and Summer Semester begins in April. Winter is the primary intake for Indian students because most masters plus every bachelor open here. All international applications route through uni-assist, which validates German equivalence and forwards eligible files to the university. Deadlines below are per HU Berlin’s international admissions publications and the uni-assist university profile for HU Berlin.

Humboldt University of Berlin’s primary intake for Indian students is Winter Semester in October. Most programs open here.

Humboldt University of Berlin Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at HU Berlin has three moving parts for Indian applicants. First, the academic floor for the target program. Second, the language proof matched to the language of instruction. Third, an APS certificate, without which uni-assist will not forward your file. HU Berlin runs an access-oriented model on many admission-free programs, meaning eligible applicants who meet the stated requirements are admitted, but competitive tracks apply a Numerus Clausus (a grade-based cut-off) and only the strongest profiles clear.

Bachelor Eligibility for Indian Applicants

  • Academic base: Class XII at 65 percent or higher is expected as a baseline.
  • Germany equivalence: Class XII alone is not Abitur-equivalent. You must either complete a Studienkolleg plus the Feststellungsprüfung, or finish one year of Indian undergraduate study in a subject-relevant discipline.
  • Language: C1 German is mandatory for all German-taught bachelors (DSH-2, TestDaF 4, or telc C1 Hochschule).

Master Eligibility for Indian Applicants

  • Academic base: A recognised Bachelor’s in a related field, typically at 60 to 65 percent (a UK 2:1 equivalent).
  • ECTS matching: Program pages list minimum credit hours in core subjects (for example, MSc Economics expects prior quantitative methods coursework).
  • Language: For English-taught masters, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 100 iBT (C1). For German-taught masters, C1 German is required.

Humboldt University of Berlin English Waiver Options

HU Berlin does not publish a general MOI waiver for Indian applicants at the institution level, so a certified score is the default route. The LL.M. program is the clearest exception: it waives the English certificate for applicants who have completed an English-language undergraduate degree of 180 ECTS or hold documented proof of at least 20 ECTS of English-language coursework and examinations. Program-specific exemptions on other masters are decided by the faculty admissions office.

Insider note: The C1 German bar, not the academic average, is what cuts most Indian applicants from German-taught bachelors at HU Berlin. Budget 12 to 18 months of full-time language study before you plan a winter intake application.

Humboldt University of Berlin PG Programs and English Requirements

HU Berlin offers 160+ programs across ten faculties, with 42 masters fully in English and the rest in German. The table below lists popular English-taught and German-taught masters that Indian students apply to. Molecular Medicine and International Health are exceptions and charge program fees. For course-wise fees and funding options, see our Humboldt University programs, fees, and scholarships hub.

Humboldt University of Berlin Bachelor Programs

All bachelors at HU Berlin are taught in German. Direct entry from Class XII is not possible for Indian students. You need either the Feststellungsprüfung certificate from a Studienkolleg or one completed year of Indian undergraduate study in a subject-relevant field. C1 German is mandatory, and admission-restricted programs (like Psychology and Law) apply a Numerus Clausus that only the top NEET-tier academic profiles clear.

Humboldt University of Berlin LL.M. Program

The Humboldt LL.M. is a one-year English-taught postgraduate law degree that runs on its own admissions cycle, outside uni-assist. Indian law graduates who want a Berlin credential without a full masters commitment target this program. The cycle for the October 2027 start opens on 1 December 2026 and closes on 31 March 2027, with decisions in May 2027.

  • Academic base: A recognised undergraduate law degree (LL.B. or equivalent).
  • Work experience: Minimum 1 year post-degree professional legal experience.
  • Language: IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 72 iBT, waived for applicants with a 180-ECTS English-medium degree or 20 ECTS of English-language legal coursework.
  • Financial commitment: Initial payment of €2,250 (around ₹2.49 Lakh) within two weeks of acceptance, non-refundable.
  • Indian applicants: Must submit the APS certificate along with the standard file.

The LL.M. does not go through uni-assist. Applications submit directly on the Humboldt LL.M. application portal. There is no separate application fee, but the €2,250 initial payment functions as the enrolment deposit.

Humboldt University of Berlin PhD Application

HU Berlin has no fixed PhD application deadlines. The route is supervisor-first: you find a professor whose research fits your proposal, secure a written confirmation of supervision, then register with the faculty PhD office. International degrees follow the same registration path as German degrees.

  • Academic base: A masters (or equivalent) from a state-accredited university in the discipline you propose to research.
  • Supervision letter: Written confirmation from an HU Berlin professor is mandatory before you can register.
  • APS certificate: Required for Indian applicants.
  • Language: Depends on the faculty, most STEM PhDs run in English, humanities usually require German.
  • Funding: The Yousef Jameel Scholarship pays €1,340 (around ₹1.48 Lakh) per month to two annual awardees in natural sciences.

DAAD scholarships, third-party stipends, and faculty-funded positions are the other common funding routes. See the university’s official PhD portal for structured doctoral programs and the Graduiertenzentrum listings.

Humboldt University of Berlin Application Process via uni-assist

Most international applications to HU Berlin run through the uni-assist online portal. uni-assist is a shared service centre that checks whether your Indian qualifications meet German equivalence rules before forwarding a validated file to HU Berlin’s admissions office. The LL.M. and structured PhD programs are exceptions and apply directly to the faculty.

  1. Register on uni-assist and start the application for the Winter 2027/28 or Summer 2027 cycle on the uni-assist HU Berlin portal.
  2. Book the APS interview at the German Embassy in New Delhi at least 3 months before your uni-assist deadline.
  3. Upload officially certified transcripts, degree certificate, Class X and XII marksheets, passport, CV, and SOP.
  4. Add the language proof: IELTS / TOEFL for English programs, DSH or TestDaF for German programs.
  5. Pay the application fee of €75 (around ₹8,306) for the first course, plus €30 for each additional, on the uni-assist portal.
  6. Wait 3 to 4 weeks for the uni-assist Preliminary Review Documentation (VPD) to be issued.
  7. uni-assist forwards eligible files to HU Berlin, which then issues the final admission decision.

Humboldt University of Berlin Admission Decisions Timeline

HU Berlin issues offer letters roughly 4 to 8 weeks after the deadline closes. Successful applicants receive a conditional Zulassung (admission letter) with an enrolment deadline usually 2 to 3 weeks out. Confirmed enrolment is required to trigger the visa file. Deferrals are handled case by case and generally require a fresh application.

Documents Required for Humboldt University of Berlin

The document set below covers a standard postgraduate application through uni-assist. Bachelor and LL.M. files add one or two program-specific items. Every foreign-language document must be submitted as a certified copy with a German or English translation attached.

  • Passport: Colour scan of the bio page, valid at least 1 year past intake start.
  • APS certificate: Original from the Akademische Prüfstelle, New Delhi.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated transcript with GPA and grading key.
  • Class X and XII marksheets and passing certificates.
  • Statement of Purpose: Program-specific, typically 500 to 1,000 words.
  • Curriculum Vitae: European CV format preferred.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two academic references on institutional letterhead.
  • English proficiency report: IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge, whichever the program accepts.
  • German proficiency proof: DSH-2, TestDaF, telc C1 Hochschule, or Goethe C1 for German programs.
  • Passport photo: Biometric, per uni-assist spec.
  • Work experience letter: Only for LL.M. and select professional masters.
  • dMAT certificate: Required from Summer 2027 onward for Indian masters applicants in Engineering, Commerce, Business, or Economics disciplines.

Before you apply: Get every academic document notarised through a district court or Indian Embassy before you scan and upload. uni-assist rejects photocopies that carry only college seals.

Humboldt University of Berlin Acceptance Rate and Selectivity

HU Berlin does not publish an official institution-wide acceptance rate. Selectivity is program-driven and moves in a wide band. A useful rough estimate is 30 to 40 percent university-wide, based on the mix of admission-restricted and admission-free programs, but the number for any single program depends on the Numerus Clausus for that year. Roughly 44 percent of HU Berlin’s programs carry a Numerus Clausus cut-off, and the remaining 56 percent admit every applicant who meets stated eligibility.

HU Berlin Program-Level Selectivity for Indian Students

  • MSc Psychology: Estimated 2 to 5 percent, with a very high Bachelor’s GPA needed.
  • Law and Philosophy tracks: Around 5 percent for Indian applicants.
  • Admission-free English masters: Higher, in the 20 to 40 percent band, if academic and language proofs match.
  • Admission-free German bachelors: Only limited by language and Studienkolleg completion.

How HU Berlin Ranking Signals Match Acceptance

The university sits at QS World Rank 140 (2027) and THE Rank 89 (2026), with a strong ranking band for Arts and Humanities (QS 26), Law (QS 37), and Psychology (QS 53). See its full Humboldt University of Berlin ranking across all subjects. Higher-ranked subjects tend to draw larger applicant pools, so effective acceptance in Arts and Law is lower than the STEM masters average.

Insider note: Recent Indian applicants covered in Humboldt University student reviews report that a 70 percent Bachelor’s plus IELTS 7 clears most admission-free English masters comfortably, while Psychology and Economics require closer to 80 percent plus strong methodological coursework.

Germany Student Visa for Humboldt University of Berlin Applicants

Indian students admitted to HU Berlin apply for a German National Visa (Type D) for study purposes, filed at the VFS Germany office (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata) on behalf of the German Embassy. The visa converts to a residence permit for study within 90 days of arrival in Berlin, issued by the Landesamt für Einwanderung.

Financial proof is the largest single hurdle. The current blocked account (Sperrkonto) requirement is €11,904 (around ₹13.18 Lakh) for one year, released as €992 per month, held with a recognised provider such as Expatrio (setup €89) or Fintiba (setup €159). Indian banks like SBI and HDFC are not recognised. Book the visa slot only after the blocked account confirmation and the HU Berlin Zulassung letter are both in hand. Standard processing runs 6 to 12 weeks in peak intake months, so file at least 12 weeks before program start.

2026 update: Germany discontinued free visa appeals from 1 July 2025. A rejected file now requires a fresh application and re-payment. Errors in the blocked account confirmation or APS document set are the two most common rejection triggers, so both must be watertight on the first submission.

Tips and Checklist for Humboldt University of Berlin Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at HU Berlin over recent Winter and Summer intakes. They combine timeline advice with insight on where files most often stall.

  • Book the APS interview 4 to 5 months before the uni-assist deadline, since peak-season processing runs up to 3 months.
  • Start language prep 12 to 18 months out if targeting a German-taught bachelor. C1 is the true bottleneck, not academics.
  • Aim for a Bachelor’s GPA above 70 percent for Psychology, Economics, and Business masters. Tracks like International Relations and Agricultural Economics are more forgiving.
  • Apply to 2 or 3 HU Berlin programs on the same uni-assist file, since additional courses cost only €30 (₹3,323) each versus €75 first-course.
  • Submit at least 8 weeks before the deadline to give room for missing-document reruns.
  • Open the blocked account only after the Zulassung letter arrives, so the funds are not idle if the offer does not land.
  • Register APS + language + IELTS or TOEFL in parallel, not sequentially, or you will miss the winter cycle.
  • Have translations notarised early, since certified German or English translations of every marksheet are non-negotiable.
  • For Summer 2027, target 15 January 2027 as the internal deadline even for admission-free bachelors, since the uni-assist queue tightens after that.

Two masters and one PhD path is a typical low-risk Indian-applicant profile for a Winter intake at HU Berlin, with the APS clock and the German-language clock running from the moment you decide on the university.

When looking for a PhD position, I looked for the research group with similar interests, its quality and reputation (publications), scientific standing of supervisor in the community, etc. The aspect of university was by a happenstance.

Scholarship

I had no scholarship, but my research was sponsored by Helmholtz Research Center Berlin, where my supervisor used to conduct his research work. My yearly salary was ~25000?/year (Gross).

You need the support of a Humboldt University of Berlin professor to act as your PhD supervisor. It is important that you find a suitable professor of your interest in which you want to do a PhD. If the professor is interested to supervise you, he or she will mail you.
