Friction is a force that opposes motion when two surfaces come in contact with each other. Whenever an object tries to move or slides over another surface, friction acts in the opposite direction of that movement. It is caused by the microscopic irregularities (roughness) present on surfaces, which interlock and resist motion.
Friction is necessary in daily life; without it, we could not walk, hold objects, write, or drive. However, too much friction can cause heat, wear, and energy loss, which is why lubricants (like oil or grease) are used to reduce friction in machines.
