CAT And TANCET Syllabus is not exactly the same but on similar pages. Some of the basic differences between CAT and TANCET are:
- CAT is significantly more challenging than TANCET and demands rigorous preparation.
- TANCET has a General Knowledge section, while CAT does not.
- CAT emphasizes advanced problem-solving and analysis, whereas TANCET focuses on foundational concepts.
Section | CAT | TANCET | Key Differences |
---|---|---|---|
Quantitative Aptitude | Covers advanced topics like Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Number Systems, Probability, and Permutations/Combinations. | Focuses more on basic Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Interpretation. | CAT has a broader scope with more challenging problems compared to TANCET. |
Logical Reasoning | Includes complex puzzles, arrangements, blood relations, and logical sequences. | Simple puzzles, coding-decoding, sequences, and basic reasoning questions. | TANCET's reasoning section is relatively simpler. |
Data Interpretation | Involves complex datasets, charts, graphs, and tables requiring detailed analysis. | Easier interpretation of data presented in tables and graphs. | CAT's DI section is more analytical and time-consuming. |
Verbal Ability | Covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, para-jumbles, and critical reasoning. | Focuses on grammar, vocabulary, and basic reading comprehension. | CAT emphasizes critical reasoning and advanced comprehension skills. |
General Knowledge | Not included. | Includes current affairs, business trends, and general knowledge topics. | TANCET includes GK, which CAT does not. |
Exam Pattern | Adaptive online test with three sections: QA, DILR, and VARC. Time-bound for each section. | Paper-based test covering Quant, Reasoning, Verbal Ability, and GK. | CAT is more dynamic and adaptive; TANCET has a static paper-based pattern. |

IS TANCET necessary for MBA?
TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) is not mandatory for all MBA programs. TANCET is necessary if you want to pursue an MBA in Tamil Nadu's state-run universities, government-aided institutions, or specific private colleges. TANCET is mandatory if you are seeking admission into MBA programs offered by:
- Anna University (and its affiliated colleges).
- Government-aided institutions.
- State-funded universities like Madurai Kamaraj University, Bharathiar University, etc.
TANCET Exam Pattern 2025
TANCET exam pattern 2025 for MCA has 100 questions divided into four sections: Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Computer Awareness.
The TANCET 2025 Exam Pattern for M.E./ M.Tech/M.Arch/ M.Plan has 115 questions divided into three sections:
- Part I- Engineering Mathematics (20 questions)
- Part II- Basic Engg. and Sciences (35 questions)
- Part III- For different disciplines (60 questions)
According to the TANCET Exam Pattern, the question paper for MBA/ MCA comprises 100 questions that must be answered in 2 hours. All questions are multiple-choice questions with four options. According to the TANCET marking scheme, each correct answer is worth one mark, whereas each incorrect response will result in the deduction of one-third of a mark.
How to calculate the TANCET Marks?
The candidate should mark the correct answer by shading the small open box that is given for the particular question in the answer sheet by using black ballpoint only.
- In the TANCET exam, you will get 1 mark each for every correct answer.
- On every incorrect answer, a deduction of 1/3rd mark will happen.
- In the pen and paper-based sheet if you shade more than two responses then there will be a deduction of 1/4 marks from each question.
The Percentile score will be calculated as stated here:
Percentile Score(P) = (Y/N) x 100
where, Y = number of students who have scored lesser marks than the candidate in that examination N = the total number of students who appeared for the examination.
Is TANCET easy to Pass?
The TANCET question pattern is simple if compared with other MBA entrance exams including, CAT XAT CMAT, etc. You have a greater chance of scoring high in TANCET Exam. Out of 100 marks, passing marks are typically low (25–35 for general category) depending on competition and cutoff trends. However, you need to follow a strict study routine and discipline to score well.
