What is GLS Institute of Design DAT 2026?
The GLS DAT (Design Aptitude Test) is the official entrance exam for admission to design programs at the GLS Institute of Design (GLSID), a constituent institute of GLS University, Ahmedabad. GLSID was established in 2016 and has established itself as one of western India’s recognised design schools — GLS University holds NAAC A+ accreditation (score: 3.4) and GLSID is ranked 22nd among design institutes in India by IIRF (2024).
GLS University was formally established in April 2015 under the Gujarat Private Universities Act. Its parent body, the Gujarat Law Society (GLS), was founded in 1927 by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Ganesh Mavlankar (India’s first Lok Sabha Speaker), and I.M. Nanavati. The institute campus is located at Law Garden, Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad — centrally placed in Gujarat’s design and commercial hub.
The GLS DAT is held in two phases every year — Phase 1 in January and Phase 2 in April. This two-phase structure lets candidates take a second attempt in the same academic year if they miss the first window or want to improve their score. The exam can be taken in online or offline mode. Candidates who have a qualifying UCEED (IIT Bombay’s Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design) score can also apply directly to GLSID without appearing in the GLS DAT.

GLS DAT 2026 Exam Pattern
The GLS DAT is not a traditional multiple-choice question exam. It is a design aptitude test that evaluates your natural ability to see, think, and express ideas visually. The exam uses drawing tasks, visual reasoning exercises, and creative aptitude problems that reveal a candidate’s design potential and creative depth.
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Exam Duration | 2 hours (120 minutes) |
| Exam Mode | Online or Offline (candidate selects at application time) |
| Question Format | Drawing tasks, visual aptitude, creative exercises (not standard MCQ) |
| Broad Sections | Creative Drawing, Design Aptitude, Visual Thinking, General Awareness |
| Negative Marking | Not applicable |
| Medium of Exam | English |
| Final Selection Score | Written DAT score + Personal Interview (PI) score combined |
What the GLS DAT Evaluates
The exam tests candidates across the following skill areas:
- Creative Drawing: Observational drawing and illustration ability; speed and expressiveness of hand-drawn work
- Form and Shape Utilisation: Using basic 2D and 3D shapes creatively within a given space or constraint
- Colour and Visual Theory: Colour relationships, colour psychology, optical illusions, and visual perception
- Design Principles: Proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis, and composition
- Innovation and Imagination: Generating original design ideas and solving visual challenges creatively
- General Design Awareness: Basic awareness of design, art, and culture relevant to the field
After the written test, shortlisted candidates are called for a Personal Interview (PI) at the GLS campus in Ahmedabad. The final merit ranking combines the written DAT score with the PI score. GLS Institute of Design does not declare a separate cutoff for the written stage — shortlisting for the PI is done internally based on the score distribution in each phase.
For the online mode, candidates appear from their own location using a designated test platform. For the offline mode, candidates report to designated exam centres as mentioned in the admit card.
GLS Institute of Design does not publish a subject-wise marks breakdown for the DAT. The overall combined score — written exam plus personal interview — determines your position on the final merit list. Both carry significant weight in the selection process.
GLS DAT 2026 Syllabus

These are available on major education portals.
GLS DAT 2026 Result
GLS Institute of Design announces the GLS DAT result via email — there is no centralised public result portal. After evaluating the written test, GLS University sends the result to your registered email ID. No specific result date is announced in advance; the timeline varies by phase.
GLS DAT 2026 Result Timeline by Phase
- Phase 1 Result: Phase 1 GLS DAT was held on January 24–25, 2026. Results for Phase 1 were communicated to candidates in February 2026 via registered email. Shortlisted candidates were then called for the Personal Interview held in February–March 2026.
- Phase 2 Result: Phase 2 GLS DAT was held on April 25–26, 2026. Results were sent to candidates via email after the exam. Personal interviews for Phase 2 shortlisted candidates were conducted in May 2026. As of June 26, 2026, Phase 2 offer letters are being issued to selected candidates.
What the Result Communication Contains
- Confirmation of whether you are shortlisted for the Personal Interview (PI)
- Date, time, and venue of your PI at the GLS campus, Ahmedabad (if shortlisted)
- Instructions for documents and portfolio to bring to the PI
- Your written test score (communicated in some cases after the PI round)
The GLS DAT result is not available on any public website or online portal. Only candidates who completed the application correctly and have a valid application ID will receive result communications via email. Check your spam folder regularly — automated emails from the institute can sometimes be filtered.
If you do not receive any communication within 3–4 weeks of your exam date, contact GLS Institute of Design at design@glsuniversity.ac.in or call 9687477375 or 9687661793. After the PI, the final merit score (written DAT + PI) is calculated, and candidates who make the final merit list receive an offer letter for seat allotment.
GLS DAT 2026 Merit List and Seat Allotment
GLS Institute of Design prepares its merit list by combining the written GLS DAT score with the Personal Interview (PI) score. The merit list is not published publicly — instead, offer letters are sent directly to selected candidates via registered email IDs, in order of merit, until all available seats are filled.
How the GLS DAT Merit List is Prepared
- Written GLS DAT score and PI score are combined to produce a final merit score for each candidate
- Candidates are ranked in merit order separately for each program and specialisation
- Separate merit rankings are maintained for each phase (Phase 1 and Phase 2)
- Offer letters are issued starting from the highest-ranked candidate downwards, until all seats are filled
- If a candidate declines an offer or fails to pay the acceptance fee within the deadline, the seat is offered to the next candidate in merit order
Phase 2 Seat Allotment: Current Status (June 26, 2026)
Phase 2 personal interviews were completed in May 2026. As of June 26, 2026, GLS Institute of Design is in the process of issuing Phase 2 offer letters to selected candidates via their registered email IDs. These letters specify the program, specialisation, and fee payment deadline for seat confirmation. A fresh admission round for the 2026-27 batch also opened around June 17, 2026 — candidates who did not apply in Phase 1 or Phase 2 can still apply now through the admission portal while seats remain available.
How to Accept the Seat After Receiving an Offer Letter
- Open the offer letter received on your registered email and read all details carefully
- Note the program, specialisation, and fee payment deadline stated in the letter
- Pay the seat acceptance fee online through the GLS admission portal within the given deadline
- Non-payment by the deadline means automatic cancellation of your offer — the seat will move to the next candidate in the merit list
- After fee payment, report for in-person document verification at GLS Campus, Ahmedabad
If you have not received a Phase 2 offer letter yet and interviews have concluded, keep monitoring your registered email. GLS Institute of Design may issue further rounds of offers if seats remain unfilled after the initial acceptance round.
Documents Required at the Time of Admission
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates (originals and self-attested photocopies)
- Graduation degree certificate and mark sheets (for M.Des candidates)
- GLS DAT offer letter printout
- Identity proof (Aadhaar card, Passport, Driving Licence, or PAN card)
- Transfer certificate from the last attended institution
- Conduct certificate and migration certificate (if applicable)
- Caste certificate (for SC/ST candidates)
- Recent passport-size photographs (4–6 copies)
Seats at GLS Institute of Design are limited — approximately 60 for B.Des across all specialisations. Once an offer letter is issued, do not delay your response. Failure to confirm the seat before the stated deadline means automatic forfeiture and the seat will be offered to the next candidate.
GLS DAT 2026 Interview Process
The Personal Interview (PI) is a critical part of the GLS DAT selection process and carries significant weight in the final merit ranking. After clearing the written test, shortlisted candidates are called to the GLS campus in Ahmedabad for an in-person interview. The PI typically lasts 15–20 minutes and is conducted by a panel of GLSID faculty members.
What the Interview Panel Evaluates
- Career Orientation and Motivation: Why do you want to study design? Which specialisation interests you and why? What is your long-term career plan in design?
- Academic Background: Your Class 12 subjects, academic performance, and any prior exposure to design, art, or craft
- Design Sensibility: How you observe design in everyday life — products, spaces, clothing, graphics, and packaging
- General Awareness: Knowledge of current design trends, famous designers, design history, and design in Indian and global contexts
- Communication Skills: How clearly and confidently you express your ideas and design thinking
- Portfolio (where applicable): A portfolio of artwork, sketches, or design projects is not mandatory but adds meaningful value to the evaluation
Tips for the GLS DAT Interview
- Be clear about your "why" — know exactly why you want to study design, which specialisation you are choosing, and what you plan to do with the degree
- Prepare a simple portfolio: 10–15 pages of your best drawings, sketches, craft work, or design ideas — even school-level or personal sketchbook work qualifies
- Know at least 3–4 famous designers and be able to discuss one piece of work that inspires you, from product design, fashion, graphic design, or architecture
- Know what GLS Institute of Design specialises in and what sets it apart from other design schools you considered
- Dress neatly and carry yourself with confidence; the panel evaluates personality and creative energy alongside academic credentials
- Be honest about your skills — the panel values genuine interest and potential over overstated credentials
For Phase 1 2026, interviews were held in February–March 2026. For Phase 2 2026, interviews were held in May 2026. Candidates applying in the fresh round (June 2026 onwards) will be scheduled for interviews after the written test of that round.

GLS DAT 2026 Preparation Tips
Preparing for the GLS DAT is fundamentally different from studying for board exams or standard MCQ-based entrance tests. You cannot crack this exam through memorisation alone — you need drawing confidence, visual awareness, and the ability to express ideas creatively under time pressure. Here is a structured approach to prepare well for both the written test and the interview.
1. Draw Every Day Without Exception
Drawing is the core skill tested in the GLS DAT written exam. Keep a sketchbook and draw for at least 20–30 minutes every day. Start with observational drawing — objects around you (a mug, a chair, your shoes, a plant). Then move to imaginative drawing: pick a random word and sketch everything that comes to mind. Speed and expressiveness matter in a 2-hour exam, so build the habit of drawing quickly without overthinking.
2. Master Colour Theory and Design Principles
Colour theory and design principles are directly tested in the GLS DAT. Know what primary, secondary, and complementary colours are. Understand warm versus cool tones and how they affect the mood of a composition. Learn the principles of design — balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and contrast — and practise applying them in your sketches. These fundamentals separate a visually strong submission from an average one.
3. Build a Portfolio Before the Interview
Start building a portfolio even before you appear for the exam. A clean, organised collection of 10–15 of your best drawings, illustrations, or design ideas is enough. School art projects, personal sketchbook work, craft or photography projects all count. Bring the portfolio to your Personal Interview — it gives the panel concrete evidence of your interest and existing skill level, and typically strengthens your position in the merit ranking.
4. Practice With NID and NIFT Sample Papers
GLS Institute of Design does not release official GLS DAT sample papers. However, previous papers from NID (National Institute of Design) and NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) are excellent practice material — they test very similar skills including visual aptitude, observational drawing, design composition, and creative thinking. These papers are freely available on major education portals and are widely used by design aspirants across India.
5. Develop Your Design Awareness
Stay updated on design through resources like Dezeen (online magazine), Instagram design accounts, and Indian fashion publications. Know the names of at least 5–6 influential designers — both Indian and international — and what they are known for. This awareness helps in the general awareness section of the written test and makes the interview conversation more engaged and confident.
6. Prepare Specifically for the Interview
The PI accounts for a significant part of the final merit score. Know clearly which specialisation you are choosing and be ready to explain your reasons. Practice expressing your design thinking out loud — describe a product, space, or piece of graphic design you admire and explain why it works. Ask a family member or friend to conduct a mock interview with you. The panel looks for genuine curiosity, design passion, and clear communication.

Ques. Can I apply to GLS Institute of Design without taking the GLS DAT?
Ans. Yes. GLS Institute of Design also accepts valid UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design) scores as an alternative to the GLS DAT. UCEED is conducted annually by IIT Bombay. If you have a qualifying UCEED score, you can apply directly to GLSID without appearing in the GLS DAT. Contact the institute for specific details on UCEED-based admissions for your program and specialisation of interest.
Ques. Where can I check the GLS DAT 2026 result?
Ans. There is no public result portal for the GLS DAT. Your result, interview shortlisting communication, and offer letter are all sent to your registered email ID. Check your inbox and spam folder regularly after your exam date. If you do not receive any communication within 3–4 weeks of the exam, contact the institute at design@glsuniversity.ac.in or call 9687477375 or 9687661793.
Ques. Is a portfolio required for the GLS DAT interview?
Ans. A portfolio is not mandatory for the GLS DAT Personal Interview but is strongly recommended. If you have drawings, illustrations, craft projects, or any design-related work — even from school — bringing a neatly organised portfolio of 10–15 pages makes a positive impression. The panel values the initiative and creative engagement it demonstrates. Even informal sketchbook pages can strengthen your interview performance.
Ques. What specialisations are offered at GLS Institute of Design?
Ans. Under the B.Des program, GLS Institute of Design offers the following specialisations: Graphic Design, Animation Design, Digital Film Making, Product Design, Apparel Design, Accessories and Jewellery Design, and Environment and Space Design. The M.Des offers Visual Communication, Design Management, and Furniture and Retail Space Design. The 5-year Integrated M.Des covers Fashion, Communication, Product, and Environment Design clusters.
Ques. How many seats are available in GLS Institute of Design B.Des?
Ans. GLS Institute of Design offers approximately 60 seats across all B.Des specialisations combined. The exact seat distribution per specialisation is confirmed at the time of admission and may vary slightly by year. For precise and current seat availability, contact the institute directly at design@glsuniversity.ac.in or call 9687477375 / 9687661793, or visit the official portal at admission.glsuniversity.ac.in.
Ques. Can I apply for both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of GLS DAT in the same year?
Ans. Yes. A candidate can apply and appear in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of GLS DAT in the same academic year by submitting a fresh application and paying the Rs. 2,000 fee for each phase separately. Each phase is a completely independent process. For GLS DAT 2026, both Phase 1 (January) and Phase 2 (April) have now concluded. A fresh admission round is currently open as of June 2026. For 2027, Phase 1 registrations are expected to open around August 2026 based on previous years’ timelines.
