What is AIFD WAT 2026?

AIFD WAT stands for Army Institute of Fashion and Design Written Admission Test. It is the entrance process conducted by the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) for admission to undergraduate design programmes at the Army Institute of Fashion and Design (AIFD), Bangalore. AIFD was established in October 2004 and is affiliated to Bengaluru North University. The institute holds a NAAC B+ grade and is ranked among India’s top design colleges.

AIFD primarily serves wards of military personnel — including serving Army soldiers, ex-servicemen, war widows, and dependants of those who died in service. A limited civilian merit quota is also available. The institute offers two flagship 4-year B.Sc. programmes: Fashion and Apparel Design (FAD) and Interior Design and Decoration (IDD), with a total intake of 120 seats.

The AIFD WAT was historically a 3-hour offline exam covering reasoning, general awareness, English, and design drawing. From 2025, the written test has been replaced with an academic merit shortlisting system combined with an online interview with a Board of Officers. Despite this format change, the exam is still widely referred to as AIFD WAT 2026 in popular usage and search.

AIFD WAT 2026: Key Change — Written Test Replaced Since 2025

The most important update for AIFD WAT 2026 is the discontinuation of the written entrance exam. From the 2025 admission cycle onwards, AWES replaced the pen-and-paper WAT with a two-stage process: academic merit shortlisting followed by an online interview.

Before 2025, candidates appeared at Army Public Schools in six cities — Pune, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Guwahati — for a 3-hour written exam. Scores on this written test determined merit rank and admission eligibility. The old format required students to prepare for specific sections: Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, English, and Design and Drawing.

From 2025, the process changed entirely:

• Stage 1 — Academic shortlisting: Class 12 marks carry 60% weightage and Class 10 marks carry 40%. No written test is needed.
• Stage 2 — Online interview: Shortlisted candidates appear before a Board of Officers via video call for a creative aptitude and motivation interview

This means your Class 10 and Class 12 board performance now directly determines your AIFD admission chances. A student with strong academic marks and good interview preparation stands a significantly better chance than under the old system, where exam-day written performance was the deciding factor.

Important: Many preparation guides and coaching materials online still describe the old WAT written exam format. Do not follow them for 2026 or 2027. From 2025 onwards, there is no written test and no traditional admit card. The selection is based on academic merit shortlisting followed by an online interview.

AIFD WAT 2026: Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for AIFD WAT, you must meet the eligibility requirements. There are two pathways — the AWES quota for military wards and a separate civilian merit quota.

Academic Qualification

• Must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or an equivalent exam from a recognised board — CBSE, ICSE, Karnataka Pre-University Board, or any State Board
• Minimum 35% aggregate marks in Class 12 across all subjects
• No stream restriction — Science, Commerce, and Arts/Humanities students are all eligible

• NIOS students must maintain identical subjects across Class 11 and Class 12

• Minimum age: 17 years as on the date of admission
• No upper age limit has been specified by AIFD

Category Eligibility — AWES Quota

AIFD WAT primarily serves wards of military personnel. The following are eligible under the AWES quota:

• Wards of serving Indian Army personnel
• Wards of retired or discharged Army ex-servicemen
• Wards of war widows
• Wards of Army personnel who died in service
• Special reservation: 4 seats for wards of Indian Air Force personnel and 2 seats for wards of Indian Navy personnel

Civilian Merit Quota

• A civilian pathway is available for candidates who do not belong to a military family
• Admission under this quota is based entirely on Class 10 and Class 12 academic marks
• 10% of total seats are reserved for Karnataka state civilian candidates
• Civilian quota candidates do not need to submit a military service certificate

Medical Fitness

• All admitted candidates must be medically and physically fit
• A medical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner is required at the time of campus reporting
