B.Tech in Biotechnology and Food Process Engineering: About the Course

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary branch of engineering developed with a vision to prepare graduates with expertise in biological engineering. Introduced in the year 2009, the course was designed to impart in-depth knowledge to students pertaining to various areas of biotechnology so as to meet the growing demands of industry and academia.

It is a 4- year program including courses from biotechnology and engineering along with relevant laboratory programs and a research project. The course covers subjects like Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Bioprocess Engineering, Instrumentation and Bioanalytical Techniques, Enzymology, Basic Computational Biology and other related subjects. The multidisciplinary essence of the course is maintained by offering students open elective subjects from departments other than the main one. Owing to the flexible structure of the course, a student can choose subjects from a range of departmental and interdepartmental electives. The prepares students for fields involving future challenges and specific areas of specialization. The department has a strong interdisciplinary research and teaching base in biological sciences and engineering preparing the students for industry as well as research programs.

Biotechnology can be classified into two broad categories: R&D in Biological Sciences and Industrial Processes. The biological sciences aspect deals with research and development in areas such as Microbiology, Cell biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology etc. for understanding the occurrence and treatment of diseases, development of agriculture, food production, protection of the environment and more such applications. Most of the R&D work in biological sciences is carried out in the laboratory. The industrial processes aspect deals with the production of drugs, vaccines, biofuels and pharmaceuticals on an industrial scale using biochemical processes and techniques.

Some of the best innovations and developments that have resulted from Biotechnology and allied fields are: Genomic Sequencing Technology, Natural Alternatives to Pesticides, Production of Biofuels and developments in Stem Cells Technology.

Placement Experience

We were just the second batch of the course. Not much of placement assistant. Only two out of 17 got the offers, that too from the unit which I went for internship. But most of my friends are well placed now and at the senior level at various MNC's. You wont get disappointed after choosing this degree / university.

Exam Structure

4 year course. 8 semesters and 16 exams. Percentage calculated as CGPA. So, start putting effort from first semester onwards. Course / the quantum of the topics were manageable and questions are structured nicely. Usually mixed with practical classes as well 60:40 was the ratio.

Ques. Which is better: to get Biotechnology at IIT Kanpur or Mechanical Engineering at IIT Dhanbad?

● Top Answer By Shreya on 16 Jul 24

Ans. IIT Kanpur does not offer biotechnology. Instead, it offers a B.Tech in Biological sciences & Bioengineering.  This stream deals with Biochemistry, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Biosensors, Devices & Technology, Bone Disease Biology, Cancer Biology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, Drug Delivery and Therapeutics, Genetics and Developmental Biology, Human Molecular Genetics, Neuroscience & Neurobiology and Structural Biology.  The faculty of IIT Kanpur are among the best in the world.  Here is a comparison between IIT Kanpur and IIT Dhanbad: Parameters IIT Kanpur BSBE (2024, Phase 1 placements)  IIT Dhanbad Mechanical (2023 placements)  Placement % 50 83.52 Highest Package  - INR 52 LPA Average Package  INR 13.8 LPA INR 14.74  Median Package INR 14.7 LPA - Top Campus Recruiters Microsoft, Fujitsu, Samsung, Reliance, Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, Texas Instruments, etc. Tata Motors, Hero, Maruti Suzuki, FMC, TATA Steel, Vedanta, JSW, etc. Important Topics in Curriculum https://www.iitk.ac.in/new/biological-sciences-bioengineering https://people.iitism.ac.in/~academics/assets/manuals/ug2223.pdf Course Fee INR 1.96 Lakhs (for 1st year) INR 1.32 lakhs (semester-wise) Both the branches are very different from each-other. Bioengineering is inclined towards Biology, while Mechanical Engineering makes greater use of Physics. But since IIT Kanpur is a much more reputed institution, and it has a bigger brand name, I would suggest you choose Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur.  The IIT Kanpur tag will help you get admission into top universities in India and Abroad for your Masters’ and Phd. This branch will open numerous opportunities for you in the area of research. Read more

Ques. Is biotech better than mechanical engineering?

● Top Answer By Rohan Yadav on 05 Apr 24

Ans. While choosing an engineering branch you should consider your career goals, interests and inclination. Both these branches have different scope and objectives. Mechanical engineering deals with designing and manufacturing mechanical systems, and Biotech combines Biology and Technology for development in areas like healthcare, agriculture, and environmental conservation. It is important for you to go through the curriculum of both these branches to decide which one better suits your interests and long term goals. Mechanical will offer you job opportunities in the automotive, aerospace, energy, robotics, and manufacturing sector. After Biotech you can work in the Pharmaceutical, Healthcare, and agricultural sector. It is up to you to analyze the potential and market demand for both these branches.  If you are skilled in Maths, Physics, Problem-solving, and Design, you can opt for Mechanical. On the other hand, Biotechnology requires an understanding of Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Lab Techniques, and Data Analysis. Biotechnology is constantly making new innovations in fields like genetic engineering, drug development, and bioprocessing. This choice is highly subjective, and completely depends upon your own interest. Both these fields are making rapid progress in their own manner. You have to ultimately decide which one is more in line with your own aspirations.Read more
