B.Tech in Biotechnology and Food Process Engineering: About the Course
Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary branch of engineering developed with a vision to prepare graduates with expertise in biological engineering. Introduced in the year 2009, the course was designed to impart in-depth knowledge to students pertaining to various areas of biotechnology so as to meet the growing demands of industry and academia.
It is a 4- year program including courses from biotechnology and engineering along with relevant laboratory programs and a research project. The course covers subjects like Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Bioprocess Engineering, Instrumentation and Bioanalytical Techniques, Enzymology, Basic Computational Biology and other related subjects. The multidisciplinary essence of the course is maintained by offering students open elective subjects from departments other than the main one. Owing to the flexible structure of the course, a student can choose subjects from a range of departmental and interdepartmental electives. The prepares students for fields involving future challenges and specific areas of specialization. The department has a strong interdisciplinary research and teaching base in biological sciences and engineering preparing the students for industry as well as research programs.
Biotechnology can be classified into two broad categories: R&D in Biological Sciences and Industrial Processes. The biological sciences aspect deals with research and development in areas such as Microbiology, Cell biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology etc. for understanding the occurrence and treatment of diseases, development of agriculture, food production, protection of the environment and more such applications. Most of the R&D work in biological sciences is carried out in the laboratory. The industrial processes aspect deals with the production of drugs, vaccines, biofuels and pharmaceuticals on an industrial scale using biochemical processes and techniques.
Some of the best innovations and developments that have resulted from Biotechnology and allied fields are: Genomic Sequencing Technology, Natural Alternatives to Pesticides, Production of Biofuels and developments in Stem Cells Technology.
