Ques. Can I pursue the PTU PhD in CSE part-time while working in a private company?
Ans. Part-time (External) PhD is available only for permanent employees of PTU's Recognized Research Centres (Group II/III), such as CSIR labs, government undertakings, or reputed private sector R&D organizations recognized by PTU. Regular private company employees not affiliated with a recognized research centre are not eligible for the part-time external category. Contract employees are not eligible at all.
Ques. I have a GATE score but no JRF. Am I exempted from the PTU PhD entrance exam?
Ans. Yes, GATE-qualified candidates are exempted from the PTU PhD entrance examination and are directly called for the interview. However, GATE qualification alone does not guarantee a fellowship or stipend unless you are admitted under a specific funded scheme like Visvesvaraya or QIP.
Ques. What is the difference between PhD in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and PhD in Computer Science (CS) at PTU?
Ans. PhD in CSE (Question Paper Code: CSE) is for candidates with B.Tech/M.Tech in CSE/IT/ECE background. PhD in Computer Science (Question Paper Code: CS) is for candidates with MCA/M.Sc./M.S. in Computer Science or IT background. Both are offered by the same department but have separate intake, eligibility, and question papers.
Ques. Is it mandatory to do coursework at PTU campus even if my supervisor is at PKIET (Karaikal)?
Ans. Yes. Even if you choose a supervisor from PKIET (Perunthailvar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Karaikal - a constituent college of PTU), you are required to complete your coursework and research work at PTU's main campus in Puducherry.

Ans. The PTU campus intake for PhD in CSE is 25 seats per cycle, plus 1 additional seat under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme. Additionally, 16 seats are available at PKIET. Of the PTU campus seats, 75% (approximately 19 seats) are reserved for UT of Puducherry candidates, and 25% (approximately 6 seats) are open to candidates from other states. Competition is moderate, with selection based on entrance test performance and interview, making research presentation preparation critical.
