WCC M.Sc Mathematics FAQs
Ques. What are the specializations and research areas available in M.Sc Mathematics at WCC?
Ans. The M.Sc Mathematics program at WCC offers comprehensive coverage of multiple specializations and research areas including Pure Mathematics (Algebra, Analysis, Complex Analysis, Topology, Functional Analysis, Number Theory) and Applied Mathematics (Numerical Methods, Differential Equations, Operations Research, Graph Theory, Cryptography, Fuzzy Theory, Automata Theory, Fluid Dynamics, Control Theory). The curriculum is designed to provide in-depth knowledge in each specialization while maintaining flexibility for students to choose electives based on their interests. The department faculty specializes in Graph Theory, Algebra, Topology, and Applied Mathematics. Final year students conduct mandatory research projects in their chosen specialization under faculty guidance, allowing them to specialize further and contribute to mathematical research.
Ques. What research opportunities and faculty achievements are available?
Ans. The department emphasizes research with strong faculty achievements and student opportunities. Dr. J. Jeba Jesintha, Head of the department, received the S Ramanujan Award 2024 and International Academic Research Excellence Award IAREA-23 for excellence in research. Three research scholars have completed their Ph.D. degrees, and currently four research scholars are pursuing part-time Ph.D. research under faculty guidance. The department conducted a UGC Minor Research Project on "Graph Matching Algorithm Towards Women Related Cancer" from 2017-2019. Students have opportunities to participate in research projects in Graph Theory, Functional Analysis, Fuzzy Theory, Automata Theory, Fluid Dynamics, Operations Research, Control Theory, Number Theory, and Cryptography. Faculty members have published research in UGC-approved journals and presented papers at international conferences.
Ques. What industrial partnerships and practical exposure are available?
Ans. The department has signed MOUs with Aadhityaa Infomedia Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai, providing students with industrial exposure and practical experience. Students undertake summer internships in mathematics, computer science, and mathematics application-oriented areas in companies, academic institutes, banks, insurance companies, hospitals, meteorological centres, and science and technology centres. These internship programs equip students with essential research skills and practical experience in their fields of study. The department also organizes regular national conferences on Mathematics and Computer Applications (NCMCA) annually since 2014, providing platforms for students to present research and network with mathematicians from other institutions.
Ques. What certificate courses and skill development programs are offered?
Ans. The department offers a certificate course on "Quantitative Aptitude and Logical Reasoning" organized every year for final year UG and PG students to prepare them for competitive examinations and enhance their problem-solving skills. Additionally, the department conducts NET Coaching Classes for II M.Sc. Mathematics students to prepare them for National Eligibility Test (NET) for pursuing academic careers. The department also organizes workshops on research methodology, LaTeX for research paper writing, and other technical skills. These certificate courses and skill development programs enhance students' employability and prepare them for competitive examinations and higher studies.
Ques. What international exposure and academic visits are available for students?
Ans. The department provides international exposure through faculty and student academic visits abroad. Dr. J. Jeba Jesintha visited Trinity College, The University of Melbourne, Australia in July 2023 and presented research papers at international conferences. II M.Sc. Mathematics students participated in the Malaysia Eduhop Program Study Abroad Student Exchange Program at University of Cyberjaya, Malaysia from 6th-19th July 2022. Dr. V. Sharon Philomena participated in International Service Learning at Trinity University Asia, Philippines in February 2023. These international academic visits provide students with exposure to global research practices, networking opportunities with international mathematicians, and cultural exchange experiences that enhance their academic and professional development.
Ques. What career prospects are available after completing M.Sc Mathematics from WCC?
Ans. Graduates from WCC's M.Sc Mathematics program have diverse career opportunities across multiple sectors. In IT and technology, graduates work as Software Developers, Data Analysts, and Quantitative Analysts in leading companies. In finance and banking, they work as Financial Analysts, Risk Analysts, and Actuaries. In academia and research, graduates work as Lecturers, Research Scientists, and pursue Ph.D. programs at WCC or other institutions. In government sectors, they work in research institutes and meteorological centres. The average package offered is 3.5-4.5 LPA, with salary ranges between 3-6 LPA depending on the organization and role. Many graduates pursue higher studies through M.Phil and Ph.D. programs, particularly those interested in research and academic careers. The strong research focus and industrial partnerships significantly enhance career prospects in academia, research, and technology sectors.
