Shri Shikshayatan College Kolkata: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 19 Reviews

Shri Shikshayatan College in Kolkata offers a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication, distinct from traditional journalism programs. Admission is merit-based, using 10th and 12th-grade marksheets. The college is well-regarded in Kolkata, particularly for its mass communication course, which emphasizes practical learning. The faculty includes three experienced teachers, two with Ph.D. degrees, although issues with punctuality and consistency are noted. The curriculum is seen as overly theoretical, limiting practical application. Despite challenges, the faculty is approachable and supportive, especially for first-year students.

The college follows the Calcutta University syllabus with two annual semester exams and a high pass rate, though the curriculum could improve. The fee structure is considered expensive; mass communication students pay about Rs. 30,000 per semester, with a total four-year program cost of Rs. 264,000. Fees must be paid annually in a single installment via Demand Draft. The college offers placements and internships after the second year, primarily benefiting BBA and B.Com students.

The highest placement package is Rs. 11 LPA, averaging Rs. 3 LPA, with around 70% of students securing placements. Companies like Wipro, Deloitte, and EY visit the campus, although opportunities for Journalism and Mass Communication students are limited to media houses like The Telegraph and Times of India. Internship stipends can reach up to Rs. 15,000. The placement cell is active with industry partners but needs more focus on non-BBA/B.Com courses.

Scholarships such as the Kanyashree and Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means are available, along with freeships for eligible students, covering entire fees. Tuition fees per semester range from Rs. 15,600 to Rs. 33,000. The college supports educational loans but does not offer them directly. Overall, the value for money is perceived as low due to high costs and limited opportunities in some areas.

Fees and Financial Aid:

According to my opinion , the fee of the course is a bit overpriced but also its to some extent worth it because of all the equipments being provided and also the travel expenses for field work. Scholarships are provided on highly excelling percentages or CGPA to the respective students. There is no on-campus placement in the institute but the exposure to internships is quite helpful.
