CMC Vellore: 82 Answered Questions

Which is better, CMC Vellore or Apollo Hospital Chennai?

Yashveer Singh
Komal Sethi

CMC Vellore (Christian Medical College) vs Apollo Hospital Chennai — different types of institutions:

CMC Vellore is primarily a teaching hospital and medical college — one of India's best for medical education, research, and tertiary care. it's a non-profit institution. exceptional for rare and complex cases. billing is more affordable than Apollo for similar procedures. best for those seeking treatment with strong academic/teaching hospital expertise.

Apollo Hospital Chennai is a super-specialty corporate hospital — one of India's leading hospitals for high-end private treatment. excellent technology, infrastructure, international patient-friendly, faster appointments, more premium amenities. costlier than CMC.

comparison for treatment quality: both are excellent. CMC has historically been stronger in research and specialized treatments (oncology, neurology). Apollo has excellent cardiology, transplants, and corporate-level service. for complex rare diseases — CMC Vellore is often the first reference. for planned surgeries with premium amenities — Apollo is preferred by those who can afford it. neither is universally 'better' — it depends on the specific condition.

How much stipend does in fellowship in CMC Vellore?

Manjari Dubey

fellowship stipend at CMC Vellore (Christian Medical College) varies by the specialty and type of fellowship:

  • clinical fellowships (DM/MCh/fellowship programs): stipend typically ranges from Rs.40,000–65,000/month depending on year and specialty. surgical super-specialties tend to be slightly higher
  • senior residents doing fellowship-level training: around Rs.55,000–80,000/month at CMC including all allowances
  • observership/short-term fellowships: usually no stipend — you pay a fee instead. CMC charges observership fees for international fellows

important caveat — CMC Vellore revises its stipend structure periodically and it's not always publicly posted. the numbers above reflect recent alumni reports and may vary by program year. the best way to confirm is to contact CMC Vellore's fellowship office or check with current fellows in your specialty.

CMC Vellore's fellowship reputation is very strong even if the stipend is not the highest — the training quality and brand for a future career in medicine (especially academic/teaching hospital careers or mission hospitals) is hard to beat. many fellows choose CMC specifically for the training rather than the stipend.

Are only Christians allowed in CMC Vellore for MBBS?

Hema Pilli

No, Christians are not the only ones allowed at CMC Vellore for MBBS. This is one of the most common misconceptions about the college.

CMC Vellore does have a unique admission system, but it's not exclusively for Christians:

  • Christian sponsored seats: ~53-55% of MBBS seats are reserved for Christian candidates sponsored by registered church bodies/Christian organisations. These candidates need a church sponsorship letter.
  • Open/All India seats: The remaining ~45-47% seats are open to candidates of all religions via NEET merit. These are highly competitive — CMC open category NEET cutoff is typically 650+ marks.

so there are TWO different tracks at CMC:

  1. Christian track — lower NEET cutoff (since competition is within Christians only), requires church sponsorship
  2. Open track — very high NEET cutoff, no religion requirement

CMC Vellore is a Christian minority institution (run by the Christian Medical College & Hospital Society) so the Christian seat reservation is legally protected. but they have never been exclusively for Christians. some of India's finest doctors from all backgrounds have graduated from CMC. if you score 650+ NEET, you can apply for the open merit seats regardless of religion.

How is CMC Ludhiana for an MBBS??

KaleidoscopicKiwi

CMC Ludhiana is definitely among the leading private medical colleges in the country. As a final-year MBBS student here, I'll break down my experience to help you understand better.

Teaching/Lectures: In my experience, the quality of lectures tends to dip as you move from first year to the final year, though there are exceptions. During my first year, I found every lecture to be engaging and educational, with teachers actively encouraging us to study and helping us with doubts during tutorials and discussions. Regular weekly and monthly tests were also a part of the routine, which kept me focused during the first two years. By the third year, when clinical subjects start, professors are often busy with their patients, so sometimes PG residents take over the classes. However, whenever professors do teach, it's always valuable. In the last two years, written tests become less frequent, and there is less personal attention, which in a way, helps us become more independent.

Teaching/Clinical Postings: We start clinical postings in the second year, initially focusing more on theory, which makes sense since we are just beginning. By the third year, things start to click, and professors are patient and eager to teach. With a large number of patients, we get to experience both outpatient and inpatient care across various departments. CMC graduates are known for their excellent clinical skills due to the strong focus on hands-on experience, especially in the final year.

Student-Teacher Relationship: The college has a unique student-teacher relationship, thanks to foster families that link us with faculty, as well as juniors and seniors. You can rely on your teachers for support during personal crises and guidance whenever needed. The open communication and approachable faculty were a pleasant surprise for me when I started.

Infrastructure: There's room for improvement here. While some hospital departments are well-equipped, the classrooms need upgrading. However, some new hostel rooms are quite nice. Recently, the institute subscribed to UpToDate and Clinical Key for all students, which have been incredibly valuable resources.

Extracurricular Activities: While not as extensive as some other colleges, we do have an annual musical, which MBBS students completely produce, from writing the script to composing the music. The administration is also very supportive, allowing us to attend conferences or participate in academic exchanges through groups like AMSA-India.

Research: One of the major benefits of CMC is the chance for undergraduates to engage in meaningful research projects, either through ICMR STS or independently. It's all about discovering your passion and finding a great mentor to guide you.

Can I get into the CMC Ludhiana MBBS with a rank of 257??

VivaciousVulture

It sounds like you're asking about your NEET All India Rank. If that's the case, then with a rank of 257, you've got a good shot at getting into CMC Ludhiana. However, it really depends on how many candidates show up for the counseling sessions.

Both CMC campuses have a limited number of seats, with 100 available in Vellore and 75 in Ludhiana. After the reservation process, Vellore offers 16 seats for the All India Quota, while Ludhiana has 13. Keep in mind, this information is specifically for non-Christian applicants without any reservations.

Which college is better CMC Ludhiana or KMC Manipal?

CunningCucumber

KMC Manipal is the better option in my opinion. It offers more opportunities for research compared to CMC Ludhiana. Many students from KMC Manipal have successfully entered residency programs in the USA, and have become outstanding doctors in countries like the USA, Canada, and the UK.

A great example is Dr. Ranjit Varghese, a pediatric orthopedic specialist. He graduated from Kasturba Medical College at Manipal University in Mangalore, India, and did his residency there too. He then completed a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at Harvard Medical School. It's impressive because getting into Harvard is a big deal, and not even students from AIIMS, New Delhi, often achieve this. Dr. Varghese now works at Johns Hopkins.

Similarly, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, a renowned cardiac surgeon and the founder of Narayana Health, also studied at KMC Mangalore. He's performed over 15,000 heart surgeries and received prestigious awards like the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his contributions to affordable healthcare.

On the other hand, CMC Ludhiana focuses on preparing students for mission work and serving in rural areas, which is very noble. However, it offers fewer research opportunities. There’s also a mandatory two-year service bond in rural areas after graduation, which can delay further studies like an MD.

In terms of ranking, KMC is 5th among Indian medical colleges, while CMC Ludhiana is 18th. The fee at CMC Ludhiana is around 50 lakhs for the full MBBS course, with a 10% increase annually, plus the bond requirement. KMC's fee is about 58 lakhs in total, with no yearly increment.

Ultimately, choose the college that aligns with your goals. If your passion is social service, CMC Ludhiana is ideal. If you're aiming for further studies abroad, consider AIIMS, KMC Manipal, or their Mangalore campus. Both colleges have their strengths, so choose wisely without letting the cost be the main factor. After all, once you're a doctor, you can repay your parents for their support.

I'm currently doing my MD at AIIMS, New Delhi, and my brother, who just took the NEET, is considering CMC Ludhiana but prefers AIIMS or KMC Manipal to pursue USMLE and residency in the USA. Both colleges have their merits, but your choice should reflect your future aspirations.

How is CMC Ludhiana for a BDS?

ElectricDragon

Christian Dental College, located on the CMC Ludhiana campus, ranks among India's top ten dental schools. It's been around for 26 years, building on the 130-year tradition of CMC. There are 40 spots available, with only eight open for the General Category. Baba Farid University Of Health Sciences Faridkot oversees the admission counseling process. The college is known for its outstanding faculty, great facilities, and plenty of clinical opportunities. Plus, unlike many other dental schools, it has a dedicated medical team due to its connection with a medical college. If you're thinking about pursuing a BDS and get a chance here, it's definitely worth considering.

How is life at CMC Ludhiana as a MBBS first year student??

RambunctiousRat

Hey there!

I'm in my second year at CMC Ludhiana now, and I can say it's a fun place to be. The first year can be pretty busy because there's a lot to cover in the syllabus in a short time.

Our classes run from 8 AM to 4 PM, and we study Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Ethics. We have a diverse group of 75 students in our class.

The hostels are really nice, much better than those at government colleges, and the students manage the mess. The food is decent.

The professors here are very knowledgeable and experienced. They might seem a bit strict, but it's to help us do well academically. Thanks to their efforts, I even got a university rank.

The one downside is the campus isn't very green. I have to walk through a busy road with a lot of traffic every morning from the hostel to the college.

Despite that, life is exciting with things like socializing in the anatomy dissection hall, practicals, and going out with friends. We have crazy hostel parties, too. It's a great experience!

Hope you enjoy reading! Oh, and I'm sharing some pictures from this year's Christmas celebrations.
