University of Northern British Columbia offers 150+ scholarships and awards, of which 12+ reach Indian applicants. Merit-based auto-consideration removes most application friction. Awards stack cleanly with tuition planning for MBA, MS Computer Science, and Environmental Science aspirants at Prince George.
- Standard first-year MBA tuition: INR 11.43 Lakhs before any award.
- With UNBC Merit Award auto-consideration: CAD 2,500 (INR 1.71 Lakhs) trims net MBA outlay to roughly INR 9.72 Lakhs.
- With top research funding stack (GERS): Graduate MS Computer Science at CAD 17,500 (INR 11.99 Lakhs) can approach a fully covered research first year.
- Next major deadline: April 1, 2026 for the main graduate awards cycle covering GERS and the In-Course Scholarship.
Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 CAD = INR 68.50 as of August 2026. GERS is UNBC’s Graduate Entrance Research Scholarship, the flagship entry funding for Master’s and PhD applicants with research intent.

University of Northern British Columbia Scholarships for UG Students
Two auto-considered undergraduate awards form the backbone for first-time Indian applicants entering Prince George. Both stack with departmental prizes and India-side loans without conflict clauses.
| Scholarship | Amount (CAD) | Amount (INR) | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UNBC Merit Award | 2,500 (one-time) | 1.71 Lakhs | Newly admitted UG or PG international; auto-considered on admission with IELTS/TOEFL/PTE on file | March 1, 2026 (tentative, annual cycle) |
| UNBC In-Course Scholarship | 1,500 | 1.03 Lakhs | Full-time UG completing 18+ credits from June 1 to May 31; annual GPA basis | April 1, 2026 |
| UNBC Scholars Program | Renewable multi-year tuition support | Tier varies | Competitive entry cohort; application with academic and leadership record | Rolling with annual review |
The Merit Award requires zero separate paperwork. Submit a complete bachelor’s application with an English-proficiency score attached, and the awards office screens you automatically. Recipients hear within four to eight weeks of admission confirmation.
The In-Course Scholarship rewards continuing students. Complete 18 credit hours between June 1 and May 31 across two semesters. File a short online form during the October 15 to April 1 window.
UNBC’s compact undergraduate pool means recipients receive personal correspondence from the Awards Office rather than a boilerplate email. This matters when combining multiple funders, since donor stacking rules vary.

University of Northern British Columbia Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Graduate funding at UNBC leans research-first. The flagship GERS operates automatically on admission, and departmental Teaching or Research Assistantships supply the second layer for thesis-track candidates.
| Scholarship | Amount (CAD) | Amount (INR) | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Entrance Research Scholarship (GERS) | 17,500 (one year) | 11.99 Lakhs | First-time Master’s or Doctoral entry; GPA 3.67 or equivalent; thesis or research-intensive project intent | April 1, 2026 |
| UNBC Merit Award (Graduate Tier) | 2,500 (one-time) | 1.71 Lakhs | Newly admitted international graduate students; auto-considered | March 1, 2026 (tentative) |
| Teaching Assistantship (TA) | 10,000 to 15,000 per academic year | 6.85 to 10.28 Lakhs | Departmental appointment; usually thesis-track Master’s and PhD | Rolling with department; September 2026 start typical |
| Research Assistantship (RA) | Varies by grant; commonly 10,000 to 15,000 per year | 6.85 to 10.28 Lakhs | Supervisor-tied appointment for research programmes | Rolling; supervisor discretion |
GERS eligibility hinges on the graduate admission GPA of 3.67 on a 4.33 scale. Indian applicants converting from a 10-point CGPA typically need 8.5 or above with strong research statements. The award is one-year, non-renewable, and cannot be combined with other UNBC entrance awards.
Reddit Insight: Indian MS Computer Science and MSc Environmental Science aspirants say the practical winning move is emailing a prospective supervisor first. A confirmed research fit is the strongest signal for both GERS shortlisting and departmental RA appointment.

India-Specific Scholarships at University of Northern British Columbia
Prince George has no India-only chair or endowment. Indian applicants instead pair UNBC’s auto-considered international awards with India-origin external funders and study-abroad loans. The stack below is what a typical MBA or MS applicant from Delhi, Bangalore, or Chennai is actually using.
| Scholarship / Funding | Amount (INR) | Sponsor | Eligibility for Indian at UNBC | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Education Future International Scholarship | 2 to 10 Lakhs | Foundation for Excellence (Delhi) | Indian student with confirmed offer at any recognised foreign university; income-based screening | April 30, 2026 (tentative) |
| Shastri Research Student Fellowship | Approx. 5.14 Lakhs (CAD 7,500 stipend) | Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute | Indian Master’s or PhD candidate visiting a member Canadian university including UNBC | October 31, 2026 (tentative) |
| K. C. Mahindra Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies Abroad | 10 Lakhs (loan-scholarship) | K. C. Mahindra Education Trust | Indian graduate with admission letter for postgraduate study abroad | March 31, 2026 (tentative) |
| Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship | Up to USD 100,000 covering tuition and living | Inlaks Foundation (Mumbai) | Indian citizen under 30, first-time Master’s abroad, admission-confirmed | March 12, 2026 (tentative) |
None of the four require UNBC to endorse the application. Each processes independently once the applicant holds the Prince George offer letter and study permit paperwork.
The Shastri Fellowship carries an additional benefit. Recipients gain automatic UNBC library, computing, and shuttle access, which lowers non-tuition entry costs for the incoming semester.
Reddit Insight: Indian MS Computer Science aspirants report the stack of UNBC Merit Award plus an Education Future or K. C. Mahindra grant. This combo trims first-year cash outlay by three to five lakhs after Prince George living costs.
Cross-check the applicable programme tuition against the UNBC main profile page before finalising any stack.
University of Northern British Columbia PhD Scholarships
Doctoral funding at Prince George combines UNBC internal entrance awards with high-value external competitions. Health Sciences, Natural Resources, and Environmental Science remain the most competitively funded departments for international candidates.
| Scholarship | Amount (CAD) | Amount (INR) | Eligibility for Indians | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Entrance Research Scholarship (GERS) | 17,500 (one year) | 11.99 Lakhs | PhD entrants with GPA 3.67 and research intent; auto-considered on admission | April 1, 2026 |
| International Peace Scholarship (PEO) | 10,000 to 12,500 | 6.85 to 8.56 Lakhs | Women PhD students from outside North America enrolled at Prince George; separate application via PEO chapter | December 15, 2026 (tentative) |
| Departmental Research Assistantship (PhD tier) | 15,000 to 25,000 per year | 10.28 to 17.13 Lakhs | Supervisor-tied research funding, common in NRES and Health Sciences doctoral streams | Rolling, tied to project start |
| Academic Distinction Recognition | Non-monetary honour | - | Small annual cohort recognised for overall academic record and thesis quality | Awarded at convocation |
In February 2025 UNBC named Christiana Onabola and Hooi Xian Lee as International Peace Scholarship recipients. Onabola, a first-year PhD Health Sciences candidate from Nigeria, received CAD 12,500. Lee, a second-year PhD Health Sciences candidate from Malaysia, received CAD 11,000.
The combined CAD 23,500 remains the highest single external honour for UNBC international doctoral women recorded on the university’s news pages.
- Health Sciences and NRES doctoral cohorts average six to eight international admits per academic year.
- Small cohort numbers mean higher per-capita funding attention for successful candidates.
Track supervisor availability through the UNBC reviews before committing to a doctoral proposal.
External Government Scholarships for University of Northern British Columbia Students
Ottawa administers several federally funded competitions that Indian passport holders can enter while enrolled at Prince George. Each processes through Government of Canada portals, not through UNBC’s Financial Aid office.
| Scholarship | Amount (CAD) | Amount (INR) | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship | 50,000 per year for 3 years | 34.25 Lakhs per year | Doctoral candidates nominated by UNBC; leadership, research potential, academic excellence | November 4, 2026 (tentative, university-level) |
| IDRC Research Awards | Approx. 42,000 for 12 months | 28.77 Lakhs | Master’s or PhD candidates from developing countries including India for development research | April 30, 2026 (tentative) |
| Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Plan | Full tuition plus living | Varies; typically 20 Lakhs plus | Doctoral applicants from Commonwealth nations including India; nominated by home country | December 15, 2026 (tentative) |
| Shastri Doctoral Research Fellowship | 4,500 for four months | 3.08 Lakhs | Indian PhD student conducting research at UNBC or another SICI member institution | September 30, 2026 (tentative) |
Vanier remains the highest-value doctoral competition currently open. Confirm with UNBC’s Graduate School whether your department has an internal nomination cap for 2026-27. Only a limited number of candidates per university proceed to the federal round.
Shastri fellowships remain the most direct India-Canada bridge. Applications route through the SICI office in Calgary rather than the applicant’s home Indian institution.

University of Northern British Columbia Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian student can secure at UNBC in one academic year?
Ans. An MS or PhD research candidate stacks three layers. GERS delivers CAD 17,500 (INR 11.99 Lakhs) as layer one. A departmental Research Assistantship adds CAD 10,000 to 15,000 (INR 6.85 to 10.28 Lakhs).
External Shastri or PEO grants add CAD 7,500 to 12,500 (INR 5.14 to 8.56 Lakhs). Realistic ceiling sits at INR 22 to 30 Lakhs. Undergraduate ceilings cap around INR 5 to 7 Lakhs of internal relief.
Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for UNBC scholarships to align with September 2026 admission?
Ans. Submit graduate admission applications between October 2025 and January 2026. The main GERS cycle closes April 1, 2026, and the Merit Award auto-screen runs around March 2026.
Decisions issue four to eight weeks after admission confirmation. External Vanier nominations must clear the UNBC internal round by September 2026 for the November federal deadline.
Ques. Does UNBC require a separate scholarship application, or is consideration automatic on admission?
Ans. The UNBC Merit Award and GERS are both auto-considered. Submit a complete admission application with English proficiency scores (IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE) attached.
The In-Course Scholarship, PEO International Peace Scholarship, and external competitions such as Vanier require separate online applications. File each through its own portal.
Ques. What GPA is needed for the Graduate Entrance Research Scholarship at UNBC?
Ans. The minimum requirement is a 3.67 GPA on the 4.33 scale, or equivalent. Indian applicants converting from a 10-point CGPA usually need 8.5 or above. Back this with a research-heavy SOP and a thesis or research-intensive project intent stated in the application.
Ques. Do UNBC scholarships cover Prince George living costs like rent and food?
Ans. GERS at CAD 17,500 (INR 11.99 Lakhs) covers roughly ten to twelve months of Prince George rent. A single-room rental runs CAD 900 to CAD 1,200 per month plus groceries.
Undergraduate Merit Award at CAD 2,500 is a tuition offset, not a living stipend. Combine research awards with departmental TA or RA appointments for a fuller buffer. This matters most during the harsh November to March winter months.

- I didn't receive any Scholarships yet.
- I can say that, There are some Scholarships for Master Student, and they typically receives 50-60% of fees as Scholarships, But for Undergraduate its too rarely possible. Master Students from Bangladesh received Scholarships because of they Region and Background and obviously because of there Academics. They require a minimum of 3.5 GPA.
- I thought to find an Accommodation for myself through Facebook, but I didn't know anything about the city, so i decided to live On-Campus. While Living On-Campus was 30-40% Expensive but it was worth it, As i was getting time for myself, As i don't have to cook, Don't have to take bus everyday.
- When i lived on Campus, Monthly rent was almost 750$ per month, for 4 months on top of that 750$ of Meal Plan at UNBC Cafeteria.
- Challenges of Homeless people, Improper Neighbourhood, Not proper vantilated House.
- I can suggest Future Students to live On-Campus for the 1st Term, As it will help you to make friends, Get use to the Place and people and surroundings.
- My place is 10 minutes car-drive far, and 20 minutes bus-ride far away from my campus.
