Canada Visa Pathway for Computer Science Students 2026
India is not a PGWP-exempt country; all international students (including Indians) are eligible for the post-graduation work permit. The PGWP is key to building Canadian work experience and transitioning to permanent residency.
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) duration matches your program length, up to a maximum of four years; a four-year B.C.S degree qualifies for a four-year PGWP.
- No employer sponsorship is required; you can switch jobs freely and work for any Canadian employer or on a self-employed basis after initial authorisation.
- The PGWP is a valid open work permit; you do not need an additional Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or provincial nomination to work.
- Spouse and dependent visas are available for families/; a dependent child can attend Canadian schools at domestic tuition rates (significant cost saving).
Visa Reality: Study permit processing from India takes 4–8 weeks if submitted directly to IRCC post-admission. PGWP processing takes 6–8 weeks after graduation. Many Indian graduates secure permanent residency within 18–24 months of PGWP grant via Express Entry.

Bachelor of Computer Science FAQs
Ques. Can I switch from Computer Science to Computer Science Honours or Software Engineering after first year?
Ans. Yes, program transfers within the Faculty of Engineering are possible after first year if your GPA meets the target program’s requirement (typically 3.0 or higher). You must declare the change before winter course registration. Note that switching to Honours or to Software Engineering may add one semester if requirements differ significantly.
Ques. Is there a co-op or internship program built into the Computer Science degree?
Ans. Concordia offers optional co-op placements; participation is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. Co-op placements are typically 8-12 months and occur between years 2 and 3 or years 3 and 4. The Institute for Cooperative Education (ICE) at Concordia connects students with employer partners, and many Computer Science students complete 1-2 co-op terms. Co-op extends your degree timeline by one term but adds paid work experience, improving both resume and visa pathway prospects.
Ques. What is the pass/fail rate in Computer Science, and is it harder than other engineering disciplines?
Ans. First-year Computer Science has historically higher withdrawal rates (15-20%) than some other engineering disciplines, particularly in discrete mathematics and data structures courses. However, no mandatory ’flunk-out’ GPA exists; as long as you maintain above 2.0 GPA (C average), you can continue. Many students improve after first year as they build programming foundations. Peer tutoring, lab support, and office hours are widely available and used by ~60% of CS students.
Ques. Will my Computer Science degree be recognised by Indian employers if I return to India after graduation?
Ans. Yes; a Canadian bachelor’s degree from an English-medium university is highly valued by Indian tech employers (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, startups). Concordia’s accreditation (Engineers Canada) and employer network (Amazon Canada, IBM Canada) add credibility. However, you may not require a professional engineering license (P.Eng) in India unless seeking structural/civil engineering roles; pure CS roles don’t mandate licensing. Most Indian tech firms hire Canadian Computer Science graduates directly into mid-level developer roles.
Ques. What are the visa options after my PGWP expires?
Ans. After a four-year PGWP, you can apply for Permanent Resident (PR) status in Canada if you meet Express Entry or Ontario Nominee Program (PNP) criteria. The typical Express Entry cutoff is 450+ Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points; four years of Canadian work experience plus a bachelor’s degree usually reaches this threshold. PR processing takes 6-12 months. Alternatively, if your employer sponsors you for a Temporary Resident Work Permit extension, you can remain employed while your PR application is pending.

- Nice institute with certified professors. A very solid engineering department. Location was a plus for me as well.
- Infrastructure, curriculum, and most importantly the assignments. Homework handed out in all the courses is surely pretty solid for self learning. Co-op program is also well built where a lot of companies take part.
Dislikes
- Career placements (non co-op): Very little help offered by university. Extended Credit program: 30 extra credits that all out of province students need which are all general course (pre college level or introductory level) which have no importance. Some teachers are also pretty bad.
I would describe my overall experience as satisfying. Its not the best university out there, but with the right amount of effort you can place yourself in the same pool like the graduates of major universities. Definitely one of the better universities in Canada.
