Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • I chose The University of Queensland mainly due to its biotechnology ranking globally. Also, I did consider the program format and the research industries inside the university before taking the decision. Example: Industries like AstraZeneca, QAAFI, PEF, TRI all of these are partnered up with UQ making it the better university to get enrolled in.
  • Along with this many of my abroad seniors suggested me to choose a place that is safe and has a healthy weather. Brisbane has pretty much close climate as that of southern part of India.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • Huge tuition fees and savings in bank was necessary. Also as previously mentioned I did consider climatic conditions as a major factor to decide upon the countries to go to. Also, a huge issue with Canadian institutions were that they were much focused on management side of biotechnology, which is not much interesting to me as I wanted to pursue my knowledge in hard core biotechnology research part of it.
  • There were not much scholarships available in this university as well, making it even more difficult for me to choose Toronto University.

Tips to enhance your application

It is always advantageous to have good bachelors degree score, at least getting above 90% will make a huge impact in getting selected into the university and that really matters in finding your first supervisor for your masters project as well.

Admission Experience

  • I chose The University of Queensland (UQ), Brisbane, for my Master of Biotechnology due to its global reputation in life sciences, consistently ranking among the top 50 universities.
  • UQ offers a research-driven curriculum with access to world-class facilities like AIBN and industry collaborations with leaders such as CSL and AstraZeneca, providing valuable career exposure.

Class Schedule

8

  • Usually in a busy semester there is about 3 classes per week.
  • Class timings are mostly from 8am to 2pm.
  • For core courses average strength would be around 60- 80. About 40% are Indians I personally take about 3 hours of daily study time at home and do bit more during the weekends.

Faculty

10

Ratio wise acceptability, I am not sure.. but all the faculties are very friendly and a respectable mail to any higher official will get you replies in couple of days. Research supervisors are the best. Because the lab working culture here is pretty chill. All that matters is the results, they are very friendly and flexible to our timings. Yes, lot of faculties are very much helpful in getting jobs inside the universities. But, clubs and volunteering experiences can fetch a better job position quickly.

Campus Life

8

Two campuses, Library (7), Sports (cricket ground, football ground, basketball court, tennis, badminton, swimming pool), gym center, Zumba classes, physiotherapy classes UQ UNION, annual party, Christmas party.

Part Time Jobs

  • University jobs get paid more: its usually 45 AUD average per hour.
  • Most Indian students prefer working in restaurants or hotels. It is pretty easy to get these if you have referrals, or if your complete some online courses related to it.
  • Not a lot of bachelor students end up getting these roles. But the more time you spend in laboratory for masters students they can get the RA role.
  • Its easy to find jobs via careers hub UQ, but it all depends on the competition if you will end up getting the job or not 24 hours a week.

Placement

6

About 70% students secure job in 6 months after graduation, but again it all depends on networking. Average salary is 70000 AUD annually at the moment In LinkedIn, through campus emails, Indeed Lowest 50000 AUD, highest 90000 AUD.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

Online platforms, such as flat mates, Facebook marketplace delayed in getting proper accommodation. Shared houses are often hard to decide. It is always good to have a look at hive and flat mates rather than student accommodations as unilodge or scape.
