New Delhi: According to a statement from the Australian government, "TOEFL iBT will no longer be offering English language tests for Australian visa purposes until further notice."

The news was posted on the Department of Home Affairs of Australia's official website, immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language score was previously admissible until July 26, 2023, but the Australian government has said that it would no longer be considered.

“The updated TOEFL iBT will be released on July 26, 2023. This version has been created to improve the test-taking experience by reducing the exam and speeding up the registration process while maintaining the rigorousness and dependability the test is known for. ETS has submitted the updated test to Australia's Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for evaluation in accordance with a standard procedure the Department uses to evaluate English language test results. We salute the DHA for carrying out this exhaustive analysis to make sure that its high requirements for English proficiency measures are met,” said Rohit Sharma, SVP of Global Higher Education and Workskills.

Australia now accepts the following tests taken in a secure testing environment as meeting the English language requirement for visas:

  • IELTS, including One Skill Retake (OSR)
  • PTE
  • Cambridge English (CAE) (also known as C1 Advanced)
  • Occupational English Test (OET), mentioning that it was created for professionals in the medical field.

Additionally, applicants should be aware that IELTS test results with OSR will be accepted for Australian visa applications, with the exception of those for subclasses 476, 482, and 485 which require scores from a single sitting/attempt.
