Open Economy Macroeconomics Account Classification Practice

Current and capital accounts in the balance of payments

For each transaction, first ask what crosses the border. A purchase of goods differs from a purchase of a financial asset. Then decide whether foreign exchange enters or leaves the country. Write both decisions before giving your final classification.

  • Goods and services: classify exports and imports under the current account.
  • Transfers without a return payment also belong to the current account.
  • Loans and investments belong to the capital account in NCERT's school-level presentation.
  • Separate the trade balance from the wider current account balance.

Make a two-column error list after each practice session. Put the transaction in one column and the corrected classification in the other. This makes similar-looking entries easier to compare.

Open Economy Macroeconomics Exchange Rate Questions Explained

Appreciation and depreciation under floating exchange rates

Read the currency quotation before deciding whether a currency has strengthened. When the quotation is rupees per US dollar, more rupees per dollar means the rupee has weakened. Keep the same quotation throughout your answer.

DistinctionRule to remember
Depreciation and devaluationDepreciation is a market-driven fall; devaluation is an official reduction under a fixed rate.
Appreciation and revaluationAppreciation is a market-driven rise; revaluation is an official increase under a fixed rate.
Foreign exchange demandIdentify the payment abroad that creates demand for foreign currency.
Foreign exchange supplyIdentify the receipt from abroad that brings foreign currency into the market.

Always state which currency appreciates or depreciates. In diagrams, label the vertical axis with the exchange rate and the horizontal axis with foreign exchange quantity. Show the original equilibrium before drawing a shift.

How to Check Your Open Economy Macroeconomics Practice Answers

Use a short check after each section instead of reading the whole booklet without writing. The PDF does not contain worked solutions or an answer key. Compare your reasoning with the relevant NCERT section, then discuss uncertain answers with your teacher.

  1. Read the command word: distinguish, explain, calculate or justify.
  2. Write the definition or account classification first.
  3. Add the reason, calculation or diagram the question asks for.
  4. Check currency units, account names and the direction of each change.

For definitions and examples, read NCERT's Open Economy Macroeconomics chapter. Keep questions you answered incorrectly in a separate revision list.

Ans. Not necessarily. Older papers may use a different mark pattern. Use the questions for concept practice and follow the current paper instructions.
