University of Wisconsin - Stout Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UW-Stout requires proof of academic performance, English proficiency, and financial capacity for the F-1 visa; standardised tests such as SAT and ACT remain optional through summer 2027.

Postgraduate applicants:

  • Bachelor’s degree: Three or four-year Indian bachelor’s with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 minimum (recommended); STEM masters expect CGPA 6.0/10 or higher
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale), or PTE Academic 53; Duolingo not accepted for graduate applicants
  • Credential verification: Course-by-course WES evaluation of all Indian transcripts
  • Financial documentation: Bank statement covering one year of the total cost of attendance ($34,130)

Undergraduate applicants:

  • Class 12 board results: Aggregate 70% to 85% (recommended); mean admitted GPA is 3.4 on a 4.0 scale
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 70 (0-120 legacy scale), PTE Academic 48, or Duolingo 115 with 90 in each sub-score
  • SAT or ACT: Not required; UW-Stout maintains a test-optional policy through summer 2027

Key insight: Indian applicants who completed a bachelor’s or master’s in English medium within the last five years may waive the IELTS or TOEFL requirement by submitting an official medium-of-instruction certificate.

University of Wisconsin - Stout Acceptance Rate 2027

UW-Stout is a lightly selective public polytechnic with an overall acceptance rate of 87.5% (estimated) across the most recent three admission cycles, derived from third-party admissions data. The university does not publish a separate international acceptance figure, but admits Indian applicants who meet the recommended academic and English thresholds at a similar rate.

Selectivity varies by programme: STEM-designated masters and the engineering undergraduate tracks are the most competitive, while business, education, and human-services programmes typically clear the priority deadline with room to spare. Late applications after 1 January 2027 face tighter seat availability rather than a higher academic bar.

Reality check: A high acceptance rate does not weaken the F-1 visa case at the US consulate. Indian applicants still need a clean academic file, proof of $34,130 in liquid funds, and a coherent statement of purpose.

University of Wisconsin - Stout Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UW-Stout occupies a single 130-acre campus in Menomonie, a small city in western Wisconsin, roughly 60 miles east of Minneapolis-Saint Paul and served by the MSP international airport for direct India-bound connections.

  • Housing: On-campus housing is guaranteed for first-year international undergraduates; annual room and board runs $9,132 to $10,732 depending on hall and meal plan
  • Labs and studios: Discovery Center houses applied research labs in packaging, plastics, and materials; Fab Lab and Game Design Studio support hands-on coursework

University of Wisconsin - Stout Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UW-Stout publishes one of the strongest first-destination employment rates among US public polytechnics, and the applied curriculum feeds a Fortune 500 recruiter pipeline every hiring cycle.

  • Employment or continued-education rate: 99% for the 2022-2023 graduate cohort, holding above 97% since 2000
  • Average starting salary: $59,000 UG / $62,000 PG (₹56.0 to 58.8 Lakh) for the 2024-25 cohort
  • STEM salary premium: Science, engineering and mathematics graduates average $67,000 (₹63.5 Lakh); IT roles average $65,000
  • Top recruiters: Target, Thomson Reuters, Sony, 3M, and dozens of other Fortune 500 employers actively hiring on campus
  • Post-study visa: 12-month OPT for all graduates, extending to 36 months for STEM-designated degrees

Insider note: As per the UW-Stout Career Services first-destination report, more than 80% of the 2023-2024 cohort accepted job offers on or before graduation day; Indian graduates in Applied Psychology and Risk Control record the fastest H-1B sponsorship timelines.

University of Wisconsin - Stout vs Peer Universities

The peer set below compares UW-Stout against three fellow US Midwest polytechnics and one Indian-favourite masters destination on annual PG tuition and applied-degree focus.

UniversityUS News Regional Midwest 2026Avg Annual PG Fee (USD)Avg Annual PG Fee (₹ Lakh)Differentiator
University of Wisconsin - Stout#84$21,38820.3 LakhWisconsin’s designated polytechnic; STEM masters at low sticker price
Michigan Technological UniversityNA (National tier)$29,46227.9 LakhLarger engineering research base; higher cost
Missouri University of Science and TechnologyNA (National tier)$28,32026.9 LakhDeep mining and materials engineering pedigree
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater#39$17,51416.6 LakhBusiness-heavy portfolio; lower STEM STEM designation coverage
Purdue University NorthwestNA (National tier)$20,97019.9 LakhPurdue system brand recognition; more competitive admissions

UW-Stout stands out on price for a STEM-designated US masters, and its 99% employment rate and $62,000 median PG starting salary produce a payback window under two years for most Indian graduates. Programme breadth is narrower than a larger research university, so applicants seeking research assistantships or PhD pathways typically look elsewhere in the Universities of Wisconsin system.

University of Wisconsin - Stout suits Indian applicants who want a US STEM masters at $21,388 per year, plan to leverage 36 months of OPT, and value a small-town campus with 99% employment outcomes. The total two-year investment of $68,260 (₹64.7 Lakh) pays back in under 18 months against the $62,000 median graduate salary, and the university’s Wisconsin polytechnic status gives Indian applicants direct US work visa access through OPT and H-1B sponsorship from Fortune 500 recruiters.

UW-Stout is not the right fit for applicants targeting research-heavy PhD tracks, large-city campus life, or brand-name programmes for consulting recruitment. Indian students set on those outcomes should look at universities in USA such as Purdue West Lafayette or the University of Wisconsin - Madison instead.

Overview

I opted for this college because I wanted to play sports while getting my degree. Stout allowed me to play at the division 3 level while getting a degree in something I loved. The school is a very hands-on learning environment that I loved.
