Likes
- It was the best university for Computer Science out of the ones I got accepted into and it was a very appealing campus. Additionally, its proximity to Boston, the education hub was also a deciding factor.
- I love the campus and the teachers. Being recognised for its food has also been a plus point of my time here. I think I like almost everything about this college!
Dislikes
- I think everything I have come across till now, I have really liked in my University. However, if I had to think about it, I love walking but for people who might not, the campus is quite huge. Not everyone likes walking, rather running to classes so if you are not one to "go on a walk" when you have to attend a class, make sure your schedule does not make you run around different areas of campus like mine did in the first semester of freshman year!
Required Exams for Admission
I think I have, up until now had a very good experience in my university. As an international student too, I never had any sort of issues in the university. I think my overall experience has been very positive, and I would definitely recommend this university to other students who are looking for an affordable yet good college to go to!
Course Curriculum
I think the Course Curriculum and Academics are very up to date and everything that I have been taught here will be very helpful to me in the future. As a freshman, I have not yet had a chance to gain any industrial or research experience.
Faculty
There are highly experienced faculty in UMass. They are all very well versed with their content, and regular office hours make them very approachable and accessible to students who want to learn beyond the hours of the class. My computer science professor for my data structures class was particularly one of my favorites because he always had a cheerful attitude which helped students want to pay attention and engage in the classroom. I think I learned a lot in that class.
Campus Life
The campus is huge and the infrastructure is commendable. Being a public university helps get federal funds which ensures the maintenance of the campus infrastructure. We have a lot of extracurricular activities too! The gym includes activity areas for various sports, such as basketball, badminton, table tennis, and squash, as well as activities such as boxing, pilates, spin classes, etc. The campus offers numerous opportunities for a student to thrive.
Placement
As a freshman, this is not something I have a lot of information on. But as far as I am aware, a lot of students get job offers from various companies based in and around Boston.
Accommodation
All first year students are required to stay on campus where they can choose rooms that consist of different options like a single, a double (2 people in one room), triple (3 people in one room) and a quad (4 people in one room). Usually it's the first 3 room choices that are mostly available but in situations where a lot more people (apart from first years) opt for on-campus housing, they might add quads too! Every dorm consists of a public kitchen which has a microwave, oven, fridge and stove. The dorms also have study areas as well as recreation areas with things like a pool table or a table tennis table to relax!
Exams
-My scores - TOEFL: 105/120; SAT: 1490 -I don't think SATs are mandatory anymore!. I had to submit essays on the given topics such as ""Why do you wish to pursue your chosen major at UMass?"" I also had to submit 2 LORs and my CV. -Interview : No interviews, but after committing to the college, they make students take a math and English exam to see which starting course the student should be placed in. While many students might think it is not important to take these tests seriously but they will determine which and how many math and English classes the student will be taking so I suggest the student does not give them in a hurry! The tests are quite easy for anyone who has given their boards right. Just be calm and give them peacefully.
