CUSB PhD (Education) FAQs
Ques. Is M.Ed. mandatory for PhD Education at CUSB, or can M.A. Education holders also apply?
Ans. Both M.Ed. and M.A. in Education graduates are eligible to apply for PhD Education at CUSB, provided they have secured a minimum of 55% marks (General/OBC/EWS) or 50% marks (SC/ST/PwD). The key requirement is that the qualifying degree must be in Education or a closely related field. Candidates with M.A. in Education from a recognised university are treated on par with M.Ed. holders for the purpose of PhD admission at CUSB.
Ques. What are the research areas available in the Department of Teacher Education at CUSB?
Ans. The Department of Teacher Education at CUSB focuses on a wide range of research areas including curriculum development and design, teacher training and professional development, educational policy and administration, assessment and evaluation in education, inclusive and special education, higher education, and the use of technology in education. Candidates are advised to review the faculty profiles on the CUSB website and align their research proposal with the available supervisors' areas of expertise before applying.
Ques. How many seats are available for PhD Education at CUSB and what is the category-wise distribution?
Ans. For AY 2025-26, only 4 seats were available for PhD Education at CUSB: UR: 2, OBC: 0, SC: 0, ST: 2, EWS: 0, with 1 horizontal reservation for PWD candidates. The seat distribution varies each year based on faculty availability and supervisor capacity. Notably, there were no OBC or SC seats in the 2025-26 cycle, which means candidates from these categories should check the current year's notification carefully before applying.
Ques. Can I apply for PhD Education at CUSB if I have a B.Ed. but not an M.Ed.?
Ans. No. The minimum eligibility for PhD Education at CUSB is a postgraduate degree - specifically M.Ed. or M.A. in Education - with at least 55% marks (General/OBC/EWS) or 50% marks (SC/ST/PwD). A B.Ed. alone is not sufficient. Additionally, a valid UGC-NET score in Education from the June 2024 cycle onwards is mandatory. Candidates who only hold a B.Ed. must first complete their M.Ed. or M.A. in Education before applying.
Ques. What is the difference between the PhD Education admission process at CUSB for JRF and non-JRF candidates?
Ans. JRF-qualified candidates (Category 1) are selected entirely on the basis of the interview, with 100% weightage given to interview performance. They are not evaluated on their NET score. Non-JRF NET-qualified candidates (Category 2: eligible for Assistant Professor + PhD; Category 3: eligible for PhD only) are evaluated on a combined merit of 70% NET score and 30% interview marks. This means JRF holders have a distinct advantage as their selection depends solely on how well they perform in the interview and present their research proposal.
Ques. Does CUSB provide any financial support to PhD Education scholars who do not have JRF?
Ans. PhD Education scholars at CUSB without JRF can access several support mechanisms. The ICSSR Doctoral Fellowship (Rs. 25,000/month) is a competitive option specifically for social science and education researchers, and CUSB scholars have been selected for it in the past. Additionally, CUSB's own Merit-cum-Means Scholarship provides tuition fee waivers for up to 20% of students per programme, and the Earn While You Learn scheme provides a stipend for part-time work on campus. Scholars can also apply for state and central government scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in).
