JIIT M.Sc. (Mathematics) FAQs
Q1. What is the Certificate Course in Data Analytics offered alongside M.Sc. Mathematics at JIIT?
Ans. The Certificate Course in Data Analytics is an optional add-on of 9 additional credits offered as part of the M.Sc. Mathematics programme. It covers specialized topics in data analytics, including statistical data analysis, machine learning fundamentals, data visualisation, and programming tools (Python/R). This certificate is designed to make M.Sc. Mathematics graduates competitive for data science and analytics roles in the industry, in addition to traditional academic and research careers.
Q2. Does JIIT conduct any special coaching or guidance for CSIR-NET and GATE for M.Sc. Mathematics students?
Ans. Yes. The department conducts a regular Career Guidance Programme for M.Sc. students, where faculty members and alumni share their experiences and provide tips to crack CSIR-UGC-NET, GATE, and other competitive exams. The curriculum is also designed to cover topics tested in these exams, including Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, and Operations Research.
Q3. Can M.Sc. Mathematics graduates from JIIT directly apply for PhD at JIIT?
Ans. Yes. M.Sc. Mathematics graduates from JIIT (or any other recognised university) with 55% aggregate marks or CGPA of 5.5/10 are eligible to apply for the PhD programme at JIIT. Candidates with CGPA of 7.5 or above, or those with UGC-NET/CSIR-JRF qualification, may be eligible for direct interview without the written entrance test.
Q4. What career opportunities are available after M.Sc. Mathematics from JIIT?
Ans. M.Sc. Mathematics graduates from JIIT can pursue: (1) PhD programmes at IITs, IISc, TIFR, and other premier institutions; (2) Teaching positions in colleges and universities after qualifying UGC-NET; (3) Research positions in government labs (DRDO, ISRO, BARC, CSIR labs); (4) Data science, analytics, and quantitative finance roles in the industry (especially with the Data Analytics certificate); and (5) Actuarial science, operations research, and management consulting roles.
Q5. What is the difference between M.Sc. Mathematics and M.Sc. Data and Business Analytics at JIIT?
Ans. M.Sc. Mathematics is a traditional programme covering pure and applied mathematics with an optional Data Analytics certificate. It is suitable for students who want a strong mathematical foundation for research, academia, or quantitative roles. M.Sc. Data and Business Analytics is a more industry-oriented programme focused on data science, business intelligence, and analytics tools. Students who want to pursue PhD or academic careers should prefer M.Sc. Mathematics; those targeting data science industry roles may prefer M.Sc. Data and Business Analytics.
Q6. Is the M.Sc. Mathematics programme at JIIT recognised for NET/SET eligibility?
Ans. Yes. JIIT is a UGC-recognised Deemed-to-be University (NAAC A+ accredited), and the M.Sc. Mathematics degree from JIIT is recognised for UGC-NET/SET eligibility. Graduates can appear in UGC-NET (Mathematical Sciences) to qualify for Assistant Professor positions and/or JRF fellowships for PhD research.
