ICT Ph.D. (Mathematics) FAQs
Ques. Is the ICT entrance test mandatory for Ph.D. (Mathematics) admission, or can I get direct admission with CSIR-NET JRF?
Ans. Candidates who hold a valid CSIR-NET JRF, UGC-NET JRF, or equivalent national fellowship from government funding agencies such as DST, ICMR, DBT, or CSIR are fully exempted from the ICT entrance test. Such candidates can apply for Ph.D. admission at ICT throughout the academic year 2026-27, not just during the regular admission window. However, they still need to appear for a department-level interview conducted by the Department of Mathematics, and the final allotment of a research guide depends on availability and departmental committee decisions. It is advisable to contact the prospective research guide in the Department of Mathematics before applying.
Ques. What are the main research areas available in the Ph.D. (Mathematics) programme at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. The Department of Mathematics at ICT Mumbai has research expertise primarily in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Mathematical Modeling, Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer in Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Fluids, Singular Perturbation Theory, Optimization Techniques, Statistical Analysis and Data Analysis, Mathematical Biology, Species Distribution Modeling, Applied Functional Analysis, Differential Equations, and Mathematical Pedagogy. The department has 6 faculty members and currently has 8 Ph.D. students enrolled. Given the relatively small size of the department, it is strongly recommended to identify a potential research guide and confirm availability of a vacancy before applying, as the number of seats is not fixed and depends on the research guide's capacity.
Ques. What is the stipend or fellowship amount for Ph.D. (Mathematics) students at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. The stipend depends on the source of funding. Students with CSIR-NET JRF or UGC-NET JRF receive Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years (JRF stage), which increases to Rs. 42,000 per month upon upgrade to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for years 3 to 5. DST-INSPIRE fellows receive Rs. 37,000 per month plus an annual contingency grant of Rs. 20,000. Students admitted with a valid GATE score may be eligible for the AICTE Doctoral Fellowship (ADF) as per AICTE norms. Students attached to sponsored research projects at ICT may receive a project fellowship ranging from approximately Rs. 14,000 to Rs. 31,000 per month depending on the project. Students without any external fellowship do not automatically receive a stipend from ICT.
Ques. How long does it typically take to complete the Ph.D. (Mathematics) at ICT Mumbai, and what is the course work requirement?
Ans. As per UGC directives, the minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme at ICT is 3 years. In practice, most students take 4 to 5 years to complete the degree. All Ph.D. candidates are required to complete 18 credits of coursework, which must be done preferably within the first year of the programme. This includes a mandatory 4-credit course in Research Methodology and a 2-credit course in Research and Publication Ethics. The remaining credits can be chosen from postgraduate-level courses offered at ICT or from other institutions with which ICT has an MOU for credit transfer. All coursework must be completed before submission of the thesis synopsis.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for Ph.D. (Mathematics) students at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. Hostel accommodation is available for Ph.D. students at ICT Mumbai but is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. Admission to ICT does not guarantee hostel admission. New doctoral students are allotted hostel seats based on vacancies created by outgoing Ph.D. students, as per departmental allocation. Preference is given to outstation students from beyond the Mumbai suburban limits. Single-seated rooms for Ph.D. students are provided subject to availability, with fees based on UGC HRA norms. Students residing in the hostel are not eligible for the HRA component of their fellowship. It is advisable to contact the Hostel Office (hostel@staff.ictmumbai.edu.in) directly after securing admission to check availability.
Ques. Can working professionals or college teachers apply for Ph.D. (Mathematics) at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. Yes, ICT Mumbai offers Ph.D. admission to three additional categories beyond regular full-time students: (a) Regular teachers at degree colleges or polytechnics with at least 2 years of full-time teaching experience (or 5 years in junior/diploma colleges), (b) Employees of National Laboratories or Government Institutions with at least 2 years of service, and (c) Industry-sponsored in-house candidates with at least 2 years of industrial experience after their Master's degree and a CGPA above 7. Teacher and government institution candidates can carry out research part-time, with a maximum duration of 5 years (extendable by 1 year), provided they spend at least 3 months per year in ICT labs. All such candidates must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer and fulfil the same academic eligibility criteria as regular candidates.
