ICT Ph.D. (Biotechnology) FAQs
Ques. Is the BET (Biotechnology Eligibility Test) the most important exam for getting into Ph.D. (Biotechnology) at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. Yes, BET is the most directly relevant national exam for Ph.D. (Biotechnology) at ICT Mumbai. Qualifying BET 2026 under Category-I makes you eligible for the DBT-JRF fellowship (Rs. 37,000/month), which is the primary fellowship for biotechnology PhD students, and also exempts you from the ICT entrance test. The BET 2026 was held on 17 May 2026 (3:00 PM - 6:00 PM) as a computer-based test. However, CSIR-NET (Life Sciences) JRF and UGC-NET JRF are equally valid for exemption from the ICT entrance test. Candidates without any of these fellowships must appear for the ICT's own PhD entrance examination.
Ques. What are the key research areas available in the Ph.D. (Biotechnology) programme at ICT Mumbai's BSBT department?
Ans. The Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology (BSBT) at ICT Mumbai has state-of-the-art infrastructure with active research in several frontier areas including: biomass to liquid fuel technologies, waste-to-value technologies, biorefinery development, algal biotechnology and metabolic engineering, fermentation and purification of biomolecules, enzyme technology, biotransformation, synthetic biology, biogas production, biopharmaceuticals and biodiagnostics, and analytical assessment of biomolecules. The department was established with primary focus on exploring biological mechanisms for alternative energy options, and has since expanded into broader biotechnology research. Candidates are advised to visit the BSBT department page on the ICT website and contact faculty members whose research aligns with their interests.
Ques. Can a candidate with M.Sc. in Microbiology or Biochemistry apply for Ph.D. (Biotechnology) at ICT Mumbai?
Ans. Yes. The eligibility for Ph.D. (Sci.) Biotechnology at ICT Mumbai requires a Master's degree in any biological faculty of science or equivalent. This broadly includes M.Sc. in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Life Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, and related disciplines. Candidates with M.Sc. in Biochemistry or Microbiology are eligible to apply, provided they meet the minimum marks criteria (55% at both Bachelor's and Master's levels for general category; 50% for reserved category). Having a DBT-JRF (BET), CSIR-NET JRF, or UGC-NET JRF further strengthens the application.
Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D. (Biotechnology) programme at ICT Mumbai, and what does the coursework involve?
Ans. As per UGC directives, the minimum period for a Ph.D. at ICT Mumbai is three years. In practice, most students take 4-5 years to complete the degree. All PhD candidates must complete 18 credits of coursework, which includes a mandatory 4-credit course in Research Methodology and a 2-credit course in Research and Publication Ethics. The remaining credits can be chosen from postgraduate-level courses offered at ICT, in consultation with the research supervisor. The coursework must be completed before submission of the synopsis for the thesis. Candidates may also take courses at other institutes with which ICT has an MOU for credit transfer, or approved online MOOC courses with prior permission.
Ques. Are there any project-based fellowship opportunities at the BSBT department of ICT Mumbai for PhD students without a national fellowship?
Ans. Yes, the BSBT department at ICT Mumbai has active DBT-funded research projects, including the DBT-ICT Centre for Energy Biosciences, which regularly recruits JRF/SRF positions for funded projects. These project-based fellowships (typically Rs. 31,000-37,000/month) are announced by individual faculty members and are separate from the regular PhD admission process. Candidates interested in such positions should regularly check the ICT Mumbai website (www.ictmumbai.edu.in) and the BSBT department page for vacancy announcements. Joining as a project JRF/SRF can also provide an opportunity to register for PhD at ICT, subject to clearing the entrance test and interview.
Ques. Can candidates from outside Maharashtra apply for Ph.D. (Biotechnology) at ICT Mumbai, and is there any state domicile reservation?
Ans. Yes, candidates from all over India can apply for the Ph.D. (Biotechnology) programme at ICT Mumbai. For PhD admissions, reservation for SC/ST categories is applicable as per Maharashtra government norms (applicable for the entrance test only). There is no EWS quota, no Single Girl Child quota, and no income certificate requirement for the PhD programme. The reduced application fee of Rs. 1,000 (vs. Rs. 2,000 for open category) for reserved category is applicable only to candidates from the state of Maharashtra. Outside Maharashtra candidates from reserved categories pay the open category application fee of Rs. 2,000.
