ICT Mumbai M.Tech Food Engineering: Fees 2026, Course Duration, Dates, Eligibility

Ans. These are two distinct programmes at ICT Mumbai with different focus areas and admission routes. M.Tech. in Food Engineering and Technology is a traditional engineering-focused programme covering food processing, unit operations, food safety, and food product development. It admits students through GATE (Food Technology/Engineering paper) or ICT written test. M.Tech. in Food Biotechnology, on the other hand, is a biotechnology-focused programme admitted through GAT-B (Graduate Aptitude Test - Biotechnology) conducted by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Food Biotechnology programme has a smaller intake of 10 seats and focuses on fermentation, bioprocessing, and biotechnological aspects of food production. Students should choose based on their background and career interests.

Ans. A GATE score is not mandatory but is strongly preferred. Candidates with a valid GATE score in Food Technology (XE-G paper) or Food Engineering are given first preference under Level 1 admission and are also eligible for the AICTE monthly fellowship. Candidates with a GATE score in any other discipline can apply under Level 2 (70% weightage to GATE + 30% to ICT written test). Non-GATE candidates can also apply and will be assessed solely on the ICT written test, but seats are offered to them only after Level 1 and Level 2 seats are exhausted. Given the limited intake of 18 seats, non-GATE candidates face very stiff competition.

Ans. Graduates of this programme are well-placed for careers in the food processing industry, food R&D, quality assurance, food safety regulation, and academic research. ICT's strong brand recognition means alumni are recruited by leading food companies such as Nestle, ITC, Britannia, Marico, Cargill, and multinational food corporations. Many graduates also pursue doctoral research at ICT or other premier institutions in India and abroad. Government organisations such as CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute), DFRL, and NDRI also recruit ICT food engineering graduates. Ans. The eligibility for M.Tech. (Food Engineering and Technology) at ICT Mumbai is specifically restricted to candidates with a B.E./B.Tech./B.Sc.(Tech.) in Food Engineering and Technology, Food Engineering, Food Technology, Food Science, or Food Processing Engineering. Candidates from other engineering backgrounds (such as Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, etc.) are not eligible for this specific programme. However, they may be eligible for other M.Tech. programmes at ICT such as M.Tech. in Green Technology, M.Tech. in Bioprocess Technology, or M.Tech. in Food Biotechnology, depending on their qualifying degree.

Ans. The M.Tech. programme is a 2-year (4-semester) full-time programme. The first two semesters consist of coursework covering advanced topics in food engineering, food processing technology, food safety, food quality management, and elective subjects. The third and fourth semesters are dedicated to thesis/research work under the supervision of a faculty member. GATE-qualified students receive an AICTE monthly fellowship during the programme. The programme follows a credit-based system with continuous assessment, mid-semester examinations, and end-semester examinations. Students are also required to complete seminars and project work as part of the curriculum.

Ans. Hostel accommodation at ICT Mumbai is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. ICT has four hostel blocks on campus (2 boys' and 2 girls' hostels) with a total capacity of approximately 900 students across all programmes and years. For fresh M.Tech. admissions, approximately 19 girls and 50 boys seats are available in hostels, subject to availability. Preference is given to outstation students from beyond the limits of Mumbai and suburbs (beyond Virar, Titwala, Ambarnath, and Panvel).
