Amity University PhD IT FAQs
Ques. Can I pursue this PhD part-time while working full-time in the IT industry?
Ans. Yes, the part-time PhD program is specifically designed for working professionals. Classes are held on Saturday and Sunday from 9:15 AM to 6:10 PM, allowing you to continue your employment. However, you must ensure adequate research facilities at your workplace and secure an NOC from your employer at the time of joining. The program requires commitment to coursework during the first year and ongoing research activities throughout the 3.5-year duration.
Ques. What is the difference between APET and CPET, and which one should I take?
Ans. APET (Amity PhD Entrance Test) is Amity University's internal entrance examination, while CPET (Consortium for PhD Entrance Test) is a national-level examination accepted by multiple universities. You can take either exam for admission to Amity's PhD program. APET is conducted by Amity on dates announced on their admission microsite, while CPET has fixed dates (April 27 - May 10, 2026). If you have a valid UGC/CSIR-NET or equivalent national-level qualification, you are exempted from both entrance tests and only need to appear for the interview round.
Ques. How much time do I need to dedicate to research besides the weekend classes?
Ans. During the first year, you attend classes on weekends (Saturday-Sunday, 9:15 AM - 6:10 PM). After completing coursework, you focus primarily on research under the guidance of your main guide and external co-guide. Most part-time scholars dedicate 15-20 hours per week to research activities, literature review, and thesis writing. The exact time commitment depends on your research topic complexity and your workplace research facilities. You must maintain regular progress reports and participate in departmental seminars and presentations.
Ques. What happens if I cannot complete my PhD within 3.5 years?
Ans. The minimum duration for part-time PhD is 3.5 years, but the maximum duration is 6 years from the date of admission. If you need additional time, you can apply for re-registration for up to 2 more years (total 8 years maximum). Female scholars and persons with disabilities (40% or more) are eligible for additional relaxation of 2 years. However, you must maintain continuous enrollment and pay fees for each additional semester. It is advisable to plan your research timeline carefully during admission to avoid delays.
Ques. Is it mandatory to publish research papers before submitting my thesis?
Ans. Yes, it is mandatory to publish a minimum of two research papers in reputed journals before submitting your PhD thesis for evaluation. These publications demonstrate your research contribution and are part of the PhD completion requirements as per Amity University guidelines. Your guide will assist you in identifying suitable journals and preparing manuscripts. The university provides support through its research publication cell and library resources for accessing journals and publication guidelines.
Ques. Can I change my research topic or guide after admission?
Ans. Your research topic can be modified with the help of your appointed guide and co-guide after admission. The modified topic must be approved by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) and Faculty Research Committee (FRC). However, you cannot change your main guide unless the guide becomes unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances. The main guide is assigned by the university based on your research area, guide availability, and your preferences after meeting eligible guides. It is important to finalize your research direction early in the program to avoid delays.
