Amity Gwalior Ph.D. (Eng.) PT FAQs
Ques. Can I pursue this PhD part-time while working full-time as an engineer?
Ans. Yes, the part-time PhD program is specifically designed for working engineers and professionals. Classes are held on Saturday and Sunday from 9:15 AM to 6:10 PM, allowing you to continue your employment. However, you must ensure adequate research facilities at your workplace and secure an NOC from your employer at the time of joining. The program requires commitment to coursework during the first year and ongoing research activities throughout the 3.5-year duration. Many working engineers successfully balance their jobs with PhD research.
Ques. What engineering specializations are available for PhD at Amity Gwalior?
Ans. The PhD in Engineering program offers multiple specialization options including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications in engineering. During the first semester, you take compulsory courses in Research Methodology, Research and Publication Ethics, and Review of Literature. In subsequent semesters, you can choose electives based on your specialization and research interests. Your research topic and specialization should align with the expertise of available guides at the university.
Ques. Is GATE score accepted for exemption from the APET entrance test?
Ans. Yes, candidates with valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores are exempted from the APET (Amity PhD Entrance Test). You must submit the official GATE certificate along with your application form or via email, but not later than two days prior to your scheduled PET date. Other national-level qualifications like UGC/CSIR-NET are also accepted for exemption. If you are exempted, you will only need to appear for the interview round conducted by the Faculty Research Committee.
Ques. How much time do I need to dedicate to research besides the weekend classes?
Ans. During the first year, you attend classes on weekends (Saturday-Sunday, 9:15 AM - 6:10 PM). After completing coursework, you focus primarily on research under the guidance of your main guide and external co-guide. Most part-time scholars dedicate 15-20 hours per week to research activities, literature review, experimental work, and thesis writing. The exact time commitment depends on your research topic complexity, experimental requirements, and your workplace research facilities. You must maintain regular progress reports and participate in departmental seminars and presentations.
Ques. What is the difference between a main guide and co-guide in the PhD program?
Ans. The main guide is a faculty member from Amity University who provides primary supervision and guidance throughout your PhD journey. The co-guide is typically from outside Amity University (from industry or other institutions) and provides specialized expertise relevant to your research topic. For part-time scholars, the co-guide is particularly important as they can be from your workplace organization, providing practical insights and access to research facilities. Both guides work together to ensure your research meets academic standards and has practical relevance. In interdisciplinary topics, a third guide may be appointed if necessary.
Ques. What happens if I need to extend my PhD beyond 3.5 years?
Ans. The minimum duration for part-time PhD is 3.5 years, but the maximum duration is 6 years from the date of admission. If you need additional time, you can apply for re-registration for up to 2 more years (total 8 years maximum). Female scholars and persons with disabilities (40% or more) are eligible for additional relaxation of 2 years. However, you must maintain continuous enrollment and pay fees for each additional semester. It is advisable to plan your research timeline carefully during admission to avoid delays. Regular progress monitoring and timely completion of milestones help in meeting the deadline.
