MAHE Ph.D. Physics FAQs
Ques. What are the main research areas available in the Ph.D. Physics program at MCNS?
Ans. The Ph.D. Physics program at MCNS offers research in multiple areas including astrophysics (galactic and extragalactic astronomy, cosmology), particle physics, gravitational physics, computational physics, experimental nuclear physics, and reactor physics. Specific research topics are proposed by faculty members and made available to candidates during the application process. Current research areas include AGN feedback, star formation, cosmic magnetic fields, and neutron physics.
Ques. What coursework is required during the Ph.D. Physics program?
Ans. All PhD Physics students must complete three mandatory courses: Research Methodology (4 credits), Mathematical Techniques/Quantitative Analysis (4 credits), and Numerical Techniques & Applications (4 credits). Additionally, students must complete at least one elective course specific to their chosen research topic. Elective options include Introduction to Astrophysics, Radiative Processes in Astrophysics, Special Topics in Experimental Nuclear Physics, Elements of Reactor Physics, and Advanced Reactor Physics.
Ques. Am I exempted from the PhD MET entrance exam if I have a GATE or UGC-NET qualification?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET assistant professorship exam or GATE/GPAT exam with cutoff marks applicable for the general category for academic years 2023, 2024, or 2025 are exempted from the PhD Manipal Entrance Test (MET). However, you must still appear for the subject-level interview at the institution.
Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D. Physics program at MAHE Manipal?
Ans. The minimum duration for the full-time Ph.D. Physics program is 3.5 years (3 years and 6 months) from the date of admission. However, the maximum duration cannot exceed 6 years. Extension beyond the minimum period requires recommendation from the Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) and approval from the Centre for Doctoral Studies (CDS).
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing the Ph.D. Physics program?
Ans. PhD Physics graduates from MAHE can pursue careers in academia as faculty members and researchers, in research institutions and laboratories, in government organizations like ISRO and DAE, in private sector research and development, and in international research collaborations. Many graduates continue their careers through postdoctoral positions at leading universities and research institutions worldwide.
Ques. What financial support is available beyond the Dr. TMA Pai Scholarship?
Ans. Beyond the Dr. TMA Pai Scholarship, MAHE provides financial assistance up to INR 50,000 during the PhD program for presenting papers at national or international conferences. Additionally, self-financed candidates receive financial assistance up to INR 30,000 for the entire duration for activities like conference presentations, workshops, and seminars. All such support requires prior approval from MAHE Manipal and recommendations from the guide and Head of Institution.
