MAHE Ph.D. (Humanities) FAQs
Ques. What are the main research areas available in the Ph.D. Humanities program at MISHA?
Ans. The Ph.D. Humanities program at MISHA offers research in multiple areas including English literature, history, philosophy, sociology, geopolitics and international relations, and other interdisciplinary humanities fields. The program emphasizes original contemporary research that is intellectually ambitious, interdisciplinary, and pioneering. Specific research topics are proposed by faculty members and made available to candidates during the application process.
Ques. What is the role of the Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) in the PhD program?
Ans. The Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) is formed for each PhD student upon admission, consisting of a guide, a chair, and other specialist faculty members. The DAC plays a crucial role in guiding the student's research journey. Within two months of joining, the student must present their proposal before the DAC. Every six months, the PhD candidate must submit a progress report to the DAC, and the doctoral scholar must incorporate recommended changes in the report.
Ques. Am I exempted from the PhD MET entrance exam if I have a GATE or UGC-NET qualification?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET assistant professorship exam or GATE/GPAT exam with cutoff marks applicable for the general category for academic years 2023, 2024, or 2025 are exempted from the PhD Manipal Entrance Test (MET). However, you must still appear for the subject-level interview at the institution.
Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D. Humanities program at MAHE Manipal?
Ans. The minimum duration for the full-time Ph.D. Humanities program is 3 years and 6 months from the date of admission. However, the maximum duration cannot exceed 6 years. Extension beyond the minimum period requires recommendation from the Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) and approval from the Centre for Doctoral Studies (CDS). No further funding will be given beyond the six-month extension period.
Ques. What are the responsibilities of PhD students at MISHA beyond their research?
Ans. All PhD students at MISHA are regarded as working part-time at the institute. This means they will function as Teaching Assistants (TA), organize events such as conferences and workshops, and take up administrative duties. All PhD students are expected to be in the MISHA premises on all working days if they are not on a sanctioned field or academic visit. Leave rules for MAHE employees apply to all doctoral students.
Ques. What happens if I fail to submit my DAC progress reports on time?
Ans. If the candidate fails to submit the DAC reports as scheduled, funding will likely be withheld. The registration of the PhD student will be canceled if the progress reports are not submitted on time. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain regular communication with your DAC and submit all required reports within the specified timelines to ensure continued support and progress in the program.
